Eagles have "interest" in Donnie Edwards (1 Viewer)

Heard it on 610 this morning... sounds great to me but I really don't know too much about him other than he is a pretty darn good linebacker. My first thought was that he is old, he will be going into his 13th year. Plus, what would they do with him and Trotter, I assume one of them would move outside.

Maybe I'm just hopeful the Eagles make A free agent pickup

A free agent pickup? The Eagles? Why would they do something so crazy? I'll take anything at this point...

Edwards has played ILB and OLB before, where Trotter has only played MLB. I'd assume if it did happen that Edwards moves to SLB or WLB?

Supposedly the Giants are interested in him too.

I have an "interest" in Angelina Jolie, but that doesn't mean she's coming over or staying for a few years.610 WIP is infamous for their rumor mongering. Would Philly be interested? Sure. I'll take note starting when he schedules a visit. Also keep in mind that Philly (A) has little room against the cap, (B) has to plan on signing several rookies, which © would get worse if they trade up in April, and (D) Andy Reid is still on a leave of absence, so even if they bring in a player he won't be meeting with Reid (Banner and Heckert most likely, along with positional coaches). It still could happen, but don't hold your breath.

Do you think really think that the Eagles are bringing people in and Andy Reid has zero involvement? I don't know, I guess as an Eagles fan I just hope that is not the case.

I understand your arguement on "interest," I was just excited to hear that the Eagles may be alive in the free agent market.

Bethel Johnson - look out!

Mike Mayock from NFL Network was on 610 this morning. They asked him about Edwards and he immedialtly asked "Do you want his baggage?"

Anyone know what kind of trouble he's been in?

Mayock talks out the side of his...mouth at times. I think he's referring to when Edwards was making a stink about his contract or being traded a year ago. Talk about him being negative and such...

Schefter reported on Total Access last night that it is between GB and a return to KC.
Green Bay? Where will they put Edwards? He's no SLB and Hawk and Barnett should be entrenched at WLB and MLB. Edwards could play either MLB or WLB in Philadelphia but he'd fit best on the outside. There have been rumors that Jeremiah Trotter is finished as a MLB for injury/age reasons (he doesn't agree). Omar Gaither was being groomed to inherit the MLB job until the Eagles needed someone to take over for Matt McCoy at WLB.

Yes Edwards is old but watching him play last season he was every bit as good as almost any LB in the game. If he ends up on a defense where there is already some talent aboard he will continue to be a playmaker for the next two seasons.

Reid is in constant contact by phone with the front office. They're not doing anything without running it by him first. And for something of this nature, I'd expect a phone meeting would take place.

Yes, I'm aware of the 1-2 calls a day that Reid is doing with the coaches / FA. Should have said "personally meet" or "face to face". It's the 4th ("D") reason so it isn't that big of a factor.

According to Adam Schefter, Green Bay, Philadelphia and KC are all interested in Donnie, and I've heard the Giants as well.

So no Saints? Seemed like a few weeks ago that was where he was supposed to land.
NO signed Brian Simmons. Not a fair comparison, just an FYI.
Does that take them out of the running for Edwards?I'd assume it does since they obviously need to direct some sheckles at their CB problem.

His "baggage" has nothing to do with his performance on Sundays. Donnie has always given 100% on the field. His baggage has to do with feeling under-appreciated and always wanting a bigger contract. Here's a post from a Charger board made on 8/6/05, which was before it became a story in the press. (Pretty much nobody on the board believed the original poster at the time, but in hindsight it sure doesn't look like he was making it up.)

Donnie Edwards At Fan Fest

Good afternoon everybody. I just got home from Fan Fest and of course I took a bunch of pictures again. I had to leave early because I am going to a party for my brother’s birthday in a little while, so I don't have a lot of time right now. I will post the pictures and a report later but I just couldn't resist posting what Donnie said to me today at Fan Fest.

I really had my doubts about some of the rumors people had posted earlier about Donnie and his dissatisfaction with his current situation but it is true.

Donnie was coming down the line in the end zone signing autographs and I leaned over and took off my hat to try and get him to sign it and my sunglasses fell off (I forgot they were on top of my hat) onto the field right in front of Donnie. He picked them up and handed them to me and I said thanks and keep up the good work, and told him it was great to have a home town guy tearing it up for us. To that he replied it is nice to play here but he is getting screwed. My jaw dropped because I couldn't believe I was hearing this directly from Donnie. He said he has totally out performed his contract and it was total bull#### he wasn't getting taken care of. He even went on about the Pro Bowl snub and said unless something happens he is out of here after 5 years!

I was stunned not because it is true but because he was so vocal about it at a public appearance like that. He must be a very unhappy camper right now to go on about it at an event like this. I can understand his perspective somewhat but I wonder how many superstar salaries this team can afford. I guess we will see how it all works out eventually but I really was surprised at his comments.
Most players are not so outspoken about contractual matters to random fans. Also, while players usually have each others' backs on contract issues, I've seen hints that Donnie's teammates were kind of sick of his griping, and didn't consider him a leader.

That said, he is a darn good football player. Especially in pass coverage.

Schefter just said "Sincere interest from Philly to add him but KC has leg up because he has played there before".

Nice acquisition by KC. He'll free up Johnson to run around and be another playmaker for KC's defense.
Agree that it's a good acquisition, though -- no more Kendrell Bell. But I'm not sure it'll free up Derrick Johnson to run around. I doubt the Chiefs move him from the left side, keeping him in many of the same responsibilities as last year. Johnson is not far behind Donnie Edwards from a coverage perspective, if at all. It's even possible Johnson may make fewer tackles since Edwards is a much better overall LB than Bell and Johnson won't be running down plays that Bell and Mitchell whiffed on as he did last year.

Yeah, there is little chance that Johnson's tackle numbers will be as high now that Edwards is there. Wouldn't the Chiefs be wise to let Johnson get after the QB more now that they have a reliable, heady player in Edwards to man the middle instead of a coverage liability like Mitchell was last season? How do the Chiefs D tackles look heading into next season? Any reason to believe that they will negatively effect Donnie Edwards' ability to be a fantasy force again?

I think it's reasonable to assume that Johnson may get some more blitz opportunities, but that's not Herm Edwards style. The Chiefs will probably be playing more Cover-2 looks this season and Johnson and Edwards may be considered too valuable in coverage to bring on pass rush. The Chiefs defensive tackles are horrid. Unless they bring someone in early in the draft, only James Reed has shown flashes of usefulness. And at 285 pounds or so, he's a penetrator not a space eater. Edwards will still be okay on the weak side. Harris will take the brunt of the blockers at MLB and leave Edwards to pursue. It's a long shot that Edwards will hit 100 solo tackles in KC, especially if they stay in a right/left alignment.

I really wanted the Eagles to pursue Edwards a few years ago when he was carping about his contract. Given our current LB situation, I wouldn't mind bringing him aboard even now, although I think at his age we have to wonder how much we'll get out of him. As a one or two year rental though? Bring him aboard.
