Eagles interested in vet center Mawae

By LES BOWEN

Free agency is bound to start eventually, whether there's a new collective bargaining agreement or not. When it does, the Eagles are still expected to be very active.

Mark Bartelstein, agent for recently released Jets center Kevin Mawae, said yesterday he has spoken with the Eagles about his client. That's a bit of a surprise, because the Birds have been reported to be poised to sign New Orleans free-agent-to-be center LeCharles Bentley.

One explanation might be that if a new CBA emerges from the current owners meeting in Dallas, the $94.5 million salary cap will rise dramatically and Bentley might suddenly have more suitors and a higher price tag. Until the Eagles actually have signed Bentley, they don't have him, and they could feel a need to hedge their bet.

Bartelstein said he didn't ask the Birds about their reported dalliance with Bentley.

"I'm sure they have interest in Kevin, but they aren't going to put all their eggs in one basket,'' Bartelstein said.

Mawae is 35, and Bentley is 26, but unlike Bentley, Mawae is available now - having been cut, he doesn't need to wait for free agency to sign with a new team. Mawae is a six-time Pro Bowler; Bentley made the Pro Bowl this past season after previously making it as a guard.

The Eagles have been linked in media reports to a number of pending free agents, a list probably topped by Bentley and Pittsburgh wide receiver-punt returner Antwaan Randle El. Other prominent names include Kansas City linebacker Shawn Barber, Detroit quarterback Jeff Garcia, Denver running back Mike Anderson (Barber and Anderson are in Mawae's category, having been released last week) and New York Giants defensive tackle Kendrick Clancy.

Barber, 31, is an intriguing possibility because he played well for the Eagles in 2002. Veteran linebackers who come to Philadelphia have had trouble learning the ins and outs of Jim Johnson's defense - the year Barber was here, before leaving as a free agent for Kansas City, he said it took him until about midseason. But obviously, if Barber were to return, he would not need such a long adjustment period, unlike the other linebackers on the market or available in the draft.

Barber's agent, Brian Mackler, said he expected to be talking to at least half a dozen teams when free-agency began, possibly including the Eagles.

Meanwhile, the Eagles are in the process of hiring an assistant special-teams coach after Oakland hired Ted Daisher to take over its special teams. One likely candidate is current kicking coach Randy Brown, but Brown might be hurt by the fact that he only coaches special teams. Daisher helped out with the defensive line as well; before he left he was assisting new d-line coach Pete Jenkins in his adjustment to Johnson's complex defensive scheme.

What do you guys think? Is he a better value than Bentley right now? Or will he be when Bentley's price tag rises if the CBA gets signed?

Bentley can play guard as well from what I understand. Mawae can't command a very high salary since he's 35 years old. When Mawae retires in a year or two, move Bentley back to center.

We'll have to see whether the earlier reports on Bentley are true or not. If the Eagles sign Bentley, I can't see them making many other FA moves unless a new CBA is signed. Bentley is going to command not only a sizable upfront payment, but $5+ million per year in average compensation I would bet.

So, after 8 years it's finally come to an end. As of Sunday evening I am no longer a New York Jet. That seems so foriegn to me after being associated with that team for so long. I am now unemployed with the ability to go to any time I want. The fact that I've been blessed over the course of my career with regards to my contracts and my health, I now find my self chasing the ring more than anything! I pray that I will choose a team that has a fair shot at the Super Bowl. In the 12 years I've been in the NFL, I have accomplished everything a player could want to. I've been to the probowl several times, I've made numerous all pro teams, I've competed on winning teams, and I've recieved very good compensation with 2 great contracts. Only one more thing is on the list of to do's in order to make my active playing career complete. As for my surgery, I am 100% recovered. I am now working on getting back to full strength. I anticipate having another probowl caliber year no matter where I end up, and look forward to the day my new team plays the NY Jets. To all the Jets fans, I thank you for 8 awesome years. To my new team, whomever you are, I look forward to competeing to help your team win a championship. God Bless

Kevin mawae

Miami and Philly seem to be openly interested in everyone yet the teams with the most cap money are relatively tight lipped about who they are looking at. This year's free agency should be interesting.

My understanding of Bentley is that although he can play Guard he much rather play Center. I imagine that factors into where he ends up going.

Kevin Mawae spoke at our church's teen group meeting a couple of years ago when he was coming back from an injury.

He talked about the moral conflict involved in being a good person/Christian and working in the trenches on gameday. He spoke of the foul language, the cheap shots and the "war" in general and how he worked real hard to see to it that it didn't carry over into his personal life. Pretty cool guy.

He stuck around afterwards to make small talk. He wouldn't give autographs to any of the adults in attendence, only to the kids. My son isn't a football fan at all, so I have since managed to procure "his" autographed Jets cap.

:bag:

Sorry to see him go.

Mawae is a class act that plays with a mean streak on the field. I actually met him in a Home Depot on Long Island. He was there buying supplies because he was fixing something in his house. I was shocked that an All Pro player like him would do Home Improvements on his own house. And I'm a life long Dolphin fan.

I would love if the Fish signed him for something like 2 years. He has OWNED Zach Thomas throughout the years. Not a lot of people can say that about Zack Thomas.

The Eagles would be far better to get Bentley. Mawae is more of a stopgap at this point. He is/was a great center, but he's 35 heading for his 13th year in the NFL trenches.

Bentley is 9 years younger than Mawae.

Add in the factor that good O-lines jell over multiple years, learning to work with one another, and a more youthful center would make more sense.

They may pay for the privilege, but they would be better compensated over the next few years.

Why are the Eagles the only team intrested in every F/A player on the market? Do they have aproblem with confidentiality in their front office? A constant leak of information , or is it just there are alot of Eagles fans on this webiste? Vandy and Vinitari should be listed pretty soon as well.

Well I dunno about the rest of the rumors but Mawae's agent has outright said the Eagles are interested. Or maybe we Eagle fans are just giddy... :D
