According to the Philidelphia Inquirer 6-year deal.
Mildly surprising.
Mildly surprising.
That's why it's so surprising.I would have expected Reid would only go for strong character guys after last seasons debacle.Heres hoping his attitude improves.
what kind of attitude problems does/did he have? I don't recall hearing much about that.Heres hoping his attitude improves.

that's really vague though. If he had been such a problem before last year, wouldn't they have traded him to Dallas or some team when they had a chance? Here's on example;http://www.nola.com/sports/t-p/index.ssf?/...57531226780.xmlwhat kind of attitude problems does/did he have? "According to an ESPN report, the Saints deactivated veteran defensive end Darren Howard for Monday night's game and considered deactivating him for the remainder of the season because he had become such a distraction."
... sounds a little familiar to another situation.
Definitely. However, his productivity last season was down. He's a little older but, if he's healthy, then he's capable of being effective. He's played injured in the past, so it's not a question of toughness. I think he's a high character guy though...I agree with Valhallan. I would be more concerned with his injury history than his attitude. When healthy though, he can flat out get to the QB.
I never heard about him being a malcontent, quite frankly. Like I said, prior to last season, he played hurt and never seemed caught up in the trade talk that dogged him the last 2 years. He was a goner, though, when they drafted Smith. Smith's emergence and Howards declining productivity - largely due to injury - made it a fait accompli. If he can stay healthy, he can be a very effective player. I wouldn't count him out by any means...After looking at this situation more closely, I don't see his attitude as being an issue at all. The Saints franchised him twice, offered him $10 million signing bonus before last season. Clearly they didn't think he was a cancer or malcontent at that point. It appears the relationship soured in 2005; which I can't really blame because that was about as toxic a situation as anyone could be put in. Katrina, a history of losing, roster mismanagement, a coach that seemingly had worn out his welcome.
I'm a bit bothered by his statement that his knee isn't 100%; for $6 million per season, I want a guy with an unblemished bill of health.I never heard about him being a malcontent, quite frankly. That's a lot of money, to be sure. He kind of fell apart last year with a myriad of injuries. However, if he can play then he will. He played 2 years ago with a cast on his hand for like half to season and tallied plenty of sacks.I'm a bit bothered by his statement that his knee isn't 100%; for $6 million per season, I want a guy with an unblemished bill of health.
IMO, Smith is a better player, and I think he will put up better numbers at the end of the day. That being said, the actual level of per game improvement could very well favor Howard. With this deal, do you think it benifits Howard's numbers more or Smith's?
