Why are the Lions playing Team Sweden?

Those aren't the Michigan Wolverines the Lions will be playing Sunday.

They are indeed the Philadelphia Eagles, who will ditch their traditional green and wear blue-and-yellow throwback uniforms complete with winged helmets in celebration of the franchise's 75th anniversary.

According to a story in the Philadelphia Inquirer, the colors, reflective of the City of Philadelphia flag, were adopted by the Eagles in 1933 when they replaced the bankrupt Frankford Yellow Jackets.

William Penn incorporated the blue-and-yellow colors of Sweden to use in Philadelphia's flag because Swedes had settled the area.

The Philadelphia Daily News reported that players aren't enthusiastic about the color scheme.

"It's different," offered center Jamaal Jackson. "But we're not here to make fashion statements, we need to win a football game."

Other programs better-suited for the blue-and-yellow unis:

• The Denver Nuggets.

• UCLA.

• The old San Diego Chargers.

• Lingerie Bowl participants.

• Ikea (the first American outlet opened outside of Philly, after all!)

I'm going to bump Calvin Johnson again because he'll think its college ball again.

As a Swedish citizen, I thought that would be pretty cool, but those jerseys are aweful.

Although hideous is the first word that comes to mind, I don't really think it covers the situation. There may not BE a right word for it. They announced this uni over the offseason but i honeslty thought they would talk themselves out of it, but there were fans in the stands Monday night wearing them. And wait til you see the helmets. It will most definitely be an interesting game to watch because of those unis. I wonder if any of the more image conscious players will be affected psychologically at least a little by this.

I saw them in the stands during the game Monday Night. Probably not selling like hot cakes, but there were a few. They should give them away instead.

Good site.As for the helmet, it looks like an upside down Pacman (earhole is the eye).

I believe FUGLY is the word that applies here. I'm a diehard Eagles fan and I'm embarrassed to see them wearing these things. If they want to honor their history in their 75th anniversary season, why not something from the 70's? The Vermiel era uniforms are nice, with the grey/white stripes on the sleeves and kelly green base. I'd love to see those again (heck, I like to use them in Madden sometimes!).
