Check in here if you are in the east coast area of Florida (especially near the coast).   Let us know if your status is riding out the storm or fleeing.

Hopefully there won't be many posts in here as everyone else should be on the road already.  Miami and west coast peeps are welcome here also with any comments or opinions.

I'm in east Orange County, about 50 miles due west of the space coast. Just finished final preparations.

Unfortunately, had a zombie house across the street from me that was just purchased. New owners pulled old couches, etc out and put em at the curb a week ago. Of course, the crap is still sitting there, and new owners nowhere to be found. Neighbors and I just moved all of it to their back yard. Thought about throwing it into the drained swimming pool, just to say "thanks, welcome to the neighborhood"

For those anywhere in the path, be safe.

I actually would toss them in the pool. Better then through your car windows.  What's your elevation where you are riding it out?

I'm in Miami (Coconut Grove) less than a mile from the water. Starting to see some increasing wind gusts and rain with the first heavy bands. Don't expect much more than 40-50 mile/hour winds and some heavy rain. We are on a higher part of the area, which is relative regardless of where you are in Florida since it's so damn flat, so I'm not concerned with flooding.

The lights are already flickering and it's only the first heavy showers and winds.  . May need that generator (thanks Amazon Prime!) after all.

Do you guys have underground power lines in Florida?  I am assuming no as I was told you can't have swimming pools either.  Stay safe.

Probably one of the highest swimming pool per capital regions in the world. Yes, mostly in ground.

and yes, In most of my area we have underground power. (Even my neighborhood which spans the 1950's through the '80s)

basements? Not so much.

Im about 80' above sea level, but anywhere in FL, the amount of lakes makes flooding a constant issue.

I guess it depends on the area. Where I live, most of the utilities are above ground as it's a relatively old neighborhood (original homes were built in the 40's and 50's). As a result, we are particularly susceptible to power outages and downed wires when the wind is strong.

My entire life in the northeast I have heard many people repeat the mantra "you can't have a swimming pool in Florida, you hit water as soon as you start digging."  Has this been an urban legend that I have believed my entire life?

BTW my buddy just posted a pic from the Boynton hospital where he works as a nurse.  Is that area in danger of surge?

I've never heard that.  Everyone has pools in the area of Florida we go

It depends on where in Boynton.  East, like by the beach?  definitely.  Out west by the turnpike?  I'm not sure.  I doubt it.  In between is a maybe, and I'm not sure what it all depends on.

MOP from North Palm Beach along A1A in Juno reporting for duty

:banned:

Cigar City is sponsoring the event. Jai Alai set up in the back room.
Any chance you could provide video?  Good luck and stay safe.

On an unrelated note, it would be kinda cool to be in the wave pool at typhoon lagoon during the storm.  I love that place.

Fingers crossed but it is looking like Freeport will get the full impact and this storm is taking a turn just a tad more north.

That would put much of Palm Beach County in the clear and it means the Treasure Coast like Vero Beach is not going to see the eye. Even slightly good news for the Space Coast but I don't want to pretend like folks won't still get screwed...still fingers crossed.

Midnight this storm will have passed Palm Beach County if it stays on current path...again it has taken a slight jump North...no celebration dance yet.

I live in Boca Raton, less than a mile from the coast. I evacuated my wife, two kids and dog yesterday to the West coast of FL. Happy to know they are safe, but I'm becoming more and more worried about what my house will look like when I get back.

That's a perfectly understandable feeling. But what's gonna happen to the house is gonna happen whether you're there or not and a couple of days not knowing is better than rescue workers looking for your remains there. You made the right move, amigo.

You have family on the other side of the state?

In England, everyone only has one spoon.  And that's your spoon for your entire life.  And if you lose it, you starve to death unless someone in your family wills you their spoon. And they have spoon millionaires in England.

Thanks for the affirmation. No family on this side of the state. I was fortunate enough to be able to secure a hotel room at the Hyatt in Bonita Springs. I called Tuesday morning at 8:30 am, reserved a room for Wednesday thru Saturday and 30 minutes later when a friend called the same hotel they were sold out.

Fyi, I would drive to the west coast and sleep in my car with empty pockets and no gas before choosing the "ride it out" option.  GB.

Is the hotel dog-friendly?

Apparently the Weather Channel guy just ordered everyone to evacuate.  My wife said Rachel Mad Dog Maddow retweeted it.  They are scared!

How could the guy have a hook on his foot?

:lmao:

So you're painting a chair, eh?

New Smyrna Beach here.  Looks like this is going to be very very ugly. We live on the Intracoastal, but have been in Houston since Monday for reasons unrelated to the storm.  Our neighbors have been nice enough to help put away our outdoor furniture, etc.  At this point I'm glad to not be there but really hope we have a place to go back to when this is over.

"This is like no storm in the record books...central and north Florida have never been hit by a storm of this magnitude..." The TWC evacuation message is no joke.

My wife's Aunt and Uncle also live in New Smyrna, and own a restaurant on the beach, Mi Mexico.  They boarded everything up and are actually on their way up to TN to crash with us for a few days.

My wife's cousins live in Lighthouse Point right on the canal.  We are headed there next weekend for the Dolphins/Steelers game.  They are riding the storm out but have been very busy prepping for the storm.  Talked to him via text earlier today, he texted my wife about 2hrs ago and said all is well as can be at the time

Steady 45 to 50 mph winds right now. This current band of storms has stalled a bit. Might not get to see out much anymore tonight.

Riding it out in West Volusia...about 30 miles from the coast. Only wished it wasn't hitting us in the middle of the night.

Yeah, I'm bracing for nothing but cat naps over the next 16 hours. Won't be able to sleep through this, don't want to, but wish I could see outside on occasion.

I've got an alarm on my freezer circuit if I lose power and the generator ready to go. Gonna try not to lose too much sleep worrying about #### I can't control. With plenty of Gorilla Glue and a nice water filtration device, it'll be a fun night.
