Ebay vs Craigslist (1 Viewer)

Craigslist post something online meet up somewhere local exchange product win/win, and no fees.

Ebay post something online someone bids and wins. Payment is held in limbo until item is mailed with tracking number. Paypal holds fund somewhere between 1 and 2 weeks until payment is in checking account.

Craigslist win

Ebay meh ,, I guess unless you are a power seller and maybe you get better perks?

If you're selling one or two items, CL is going to be your best bet. If you're doing any decent volume, it's ebay by far.

I'm a power seller on ebay. I get my money immediately and I don't have to go meet anyone. I just pack the orders, drop them off and I'm done.

craigslist, post an asking price as "firm" and still deal with low-ballers, tire-kickers and scammers.

Maybe I didn't notice all the fees as well. I sold a radar detector for 350 bucks. 35 bucks to EBAY. and 15 dollars Paypal. I take home 300 #### that! Never again. LOL I am such a sucker. I could have sold it so fast on craigslist and pocketed all the money, #### all those fees. live and learn.

Ebay opens you up to millions of potential buyers and cl lets a couple of hundred mouth breathers know where you live or potentially mug you in some supermarket parking lot.

If it's something popular with guaranteed value, go with Craigslist.

If it's something obscure or rare that has a limited range of buyers, go with eBay.

What kind of shady are you that your paypal money gets held in limbo for 2 weeks? Mine has always been available to withdraw within 2 seconds of the payment being made.

I guess its Craigslist for me. After seeing this thread I put up my iPhone 4 that has been collecting dust lately. Haven't used it since November. Will be getting one version of the iPhone 6 later this year.

Took it to a store a couple weeks back and they offered $40 for it. Put it online tonight for $100. One person contacted me within the hour of posting. Just dropped it off. Accepted $70 for it as I have no use for it. Yeah, he might be able to sell it for more but that is his job to do now. Met at a 24-hour gas station. Handed me $70 and we were out of there in less than 10 minutes. No fees.

Sold in under 3 hours. I'm good.

Sold two 4s iPhones recently for a total of $700 on eBay.

Good thing you saved on those fees, assuming you don't count the $30 that he haggled you down on your already underpriced phone as fees.

The last couple iPhone 4's on ebay sold for $150-$160. But with those $15 in fees coming out of that I bet those guys wish they got $70 for it on craigslist instead.

 Works for me. I'm not upset or worried about getting that one buyer to pay top dollar. If the other guy wants to put in the energy to Emincence the phone, so be it.

takes the same energy to list on eBay as craigslist. same energy to drop it at post office as opposed to meeting at a gas station.

Ebay is awesome

Craigslist is awesome

Both have their pros and cons. Ebays cons are money, craigslist cons are horrible people to deal with in person and a lot of wasted time on no-shows.

Interesting. I've purchased around 10 things on CL, and sold maybe 5 things on CL, all in the musical instruments and equipment category. Never had a no show, and never had a problem with a kick tires with no intent to purchase guy. Is that really a common problem?

Craigslist just seems shiftier than E-Bay. The fees on E-bay can be a pain...but if you're reasonably competent....you're hiding at least some of them in either the cost of the item or the shipping.

While I do find Craigslist useful for bigger items that are cost prohibitive to mail out....I do prefer E-bay just because I can do it while watching a ball game from the comfort of my rec room. You get a broader consumer base and you aren't dealing face to face with someone in a WAL-MART parking lot.

This is the only problem i have with CL
Was buying my wife the latest fad exercise video set and went the CL route first. Got one lined up and texted several times with the person all the way up to 15 minutes before the meet up time. No show. Bought one on Ebay and right after I bought it I get an email from Ebay that the listing had been removed by them. Never shipped and still in "resolution". You'd think if they pulled the ad it would have been an instant refund.

Went the CL route again yesterday and started to get that feeling that it wouldn't work out. Low price, quick response to my email at 7 in the morning and then I get to the meeting spot and not there. Wait 15 minutes and I'm about to give up and he finally shows up. My wife better get that beach body they promise.

Ah yes the one other issue with cl, the show up and haggle person. Hate that and just on principle I will not change the price .01 if we are set on the price before I leave my house.

I agree that it depends on the item. I have sold a motorcycle, kayak, and a couple guitars on CL. All things I would rather not ship. Still got the low-ballers though.

Yes, but I think it's highly item dependent. Different crowds for different stuff.

I prefer craigslist myself, but the no-shows are the most annoying. And the people who pretty much ignore what is in your emails...

Recently sold my kids 1996 Dodge Intrepid for $800. I was very specific on what was wrong with it in the ad. Guy emails me, "What's wrong with it?" I copy and pasted the GOOD and BAD that was clearly listed in the ad:

Good:
- Low mileage for 1996
- Engine Runs great
- No Check engine Light
- No major repair work needed.
- Power locks, windows.

Bad:
- Driven by a 16 year old who bounced it off a few things. Has some dents, scrapes, etc.
- Steering wheel is off center. Probably needs alignment
- AC does not work. Needs new compressor.
- Air bag light has been on ever since I purchased it 2 years ago.
- Wipers need new linkage. They work, but they have a zip tie holding the linkage together.
- Broken piece off crowl (plastic shield under wiper arms)
- Driver's side window has difficulties going up and down. You have to apply pressure to the window as it slips in the track.
- Radiator fan stays on all the time. Probably needs a new sensor, wasn't worried about it enough to fix it myself.

He responds back with "Do it run?" :wall:

Spoke with the buyer on the phone last night. And, he is not happy but understands that ebay can be a PITA. I offered to give him a refund, but he is willing to still wait.

I sold the radar detector on April 1st, and 2 weeks later he still doesn't have his radar and I still don't have my money. ebay

On CL you just have to weed through the low ballers/scammers. I sold my last two vehicles on a combination of Autotrader and CL. First time, I had a decent lead on CL, but a guy who saw my extra special ad (he actually mentioned the pop-up I paid extra for catching his eye) paid cash for it the next day. Second time I figured I would save a couple bucks (around $100-200 I think) and just do CL. A couple idiots with low ball offers (on a loaded Toyota Sienna, no thanks). Had one couple kick the tires and not buy it, but I wasn't a huge fan of them as they were out of town and had to arrange with their family. Seemed legit, but also seemed like it could be a pain. Next weekend someone who just totaled their minivan came by and gave me $1k more than the previous couple. All in all, it was really smooth and it was very easy to weed out the idiots.
