Ebola (1 Viewer)

Here's what Ebola has taught me

when there is an epidemic that is a real threat to our country, something that could kill millions (ebola may or may not be it) it will no doubt be politicized immediately and our need argue over everything to make everything a left or right issue will cost lives

the left and right are unable to come together no matter what the cost

that to me is the sad lesson in Ebola:

Politics >>>>> Protecting our citizens

this really isn't a left/right issue. Dems are just as stupid on this issue as republicans.

it is an educated & science issue vs uninformed.

i disagree

since obama is a left leaning president we get a lot on the right screaming he is not doing enough and supporting measures (like quarantining) that (imo) they would never support if he was calling for them

do you or anyone think for a second that if Obama had called for quarantining or blocking flights Rand Paul would not be up in libertarian arms about how awful it is, how he is destroying our freedoms?

Ebola doesn't seem so tough when people are treated in the United States.
Define tough? We have to have isolated faucilities with full HAZMAT gear with dedicated nurses around the clock, who won't be able to work with any other patients for the couple weeks it takes to cure that one person, plus three additional weeks after they leave. We already had two nurses infected with the virus in the few sample cases we had. The money and resources for each patient has been substaintial.

Tough in the sense that everyone who has had it has lived to tell the tale except the guy who was an advanced case. Detected early and treated in the US = 0% mortality rate so far.

0% +/- 75%

ebola = :own3d:

The big thing is going to be any more nurses/doctors infected while treating patients in the US. The Texas hospital was completely unprepared and those nurses got infected. About 3-4 weeks from now I'm expecting to see no more US Ebola case in the non-overseas population.

so my wife are making a quick trip to Ohio (through Dallas) Oct 31- Nov.2 She is concerned about flying. I can push her either direction, and man I really don't want to go on this trip. I think I need to start channeling the Eboliacs in here.
:kicksrock:

<last night>

Mrs. Fennis: I'm kinda worried to fly, maybe we should cancel?

Me: What are you crazy?

Me: <thinking to myself> You sound like those people on FFA

Me: Here's why its ok to fly.... blah blah blah <5 minutes later>

Me: ### #### it, I'm an idiot.

There was a woman wearing a surgical mask on my plane the other day. And she wasn't Asian.

No, just zero.
with no confidence level, it is meaningless. Come on, like two successful cases and you want to claim we have it licked. That is stupid.
More than 2.
Depending on how you count, there was the guy who died. You are cherry-picking. The first couple were flown to the US and recieved intial treatment elsewhere. The guy who died showed up to US hospital the first day he had fever and was diagnosed 3 days later and treated for 9 days before dying.

my wife asked if we can wear masks. I told her she can wear a mask, but under no circumstance can we even pretend to know each other.

What about the slippery slope?

if you enpower the government to quarantine all travelers from an entitre area, might they not extend that?

couldn't obama quarantine all travelers from Texas just to incvonience an area where he has no influence?

couldn't Chritsy quarantine political foes to harass them?

aren't you unleashing Pandora's box by allowing the government to imprison people based on their travel habits?
Great point.

I think any governmental entity that aims to impose quarantine should have to fulfill a pretty high standard of imminent danger to a community. "People are worried" isn't good enough. But that's in a perfect world, in which we don't live.
This sounds good....but what is the criteria?.....In my opinion Ebola is right there....Now I know all about how it is tough to catch etc....But we are allowing people to self monitor, and that just doesn't seem like a reliable system...When you have a contagious disease with a high kill rate and no vaccination, to me quarantines are not unreasonable...Sure people are going to be inconvenienced initially, but in doing so it keeps the disease in check and gives the scientist time to develop a vaccination.
the flu?and for pro quarantine people, are you also for government mandated vaccines?

the same arguments for one can be made for the other, it seems
are you against government mandated vaccines such as mumps, measles, rubella, tenanus, polio? The same arguements are made and they are mandated by states and they stand up in court. You can make slippery slope arguments for almost anything and they all end up absurd. Let's stick to what is actually being discussed and not some hypothetical extention of the absurd.
I was fully vaccinated when I was a kid but still got mumps and measles. Now I take flu shots every year and I still get the flu. I begin to suspect the vaccines do not work on me.

And the drama continues.....

Nurse Kaci Hickox Doesn't Intend to Obey Maine Ebola Quarantine: Report

Maine health officials are prepared to "pursue legal authority" to enforce a quarantine Tuesday as reports surfaced that Kaci Hickox, a nurse who treated Ebola patients in Sierra Leone and shows no symptoms of the virus, doesn't intend to obey the quarantine.

"We do not want to have to legally enforce in-home quarantine," Mary Mayhew, commissioner of the state Health and Human Services Department, said at a news conference. She wouldn't comment on Hickox's case specifically, but Hickox's attorney told the Bangor Daily News that his client — who was quarantined against her will in New Jersey upon her return to the U.S. — "doesn't want to agree to continue to be confined to a residence" beyond two days.

Hickox spent the weekend in an isolation tent at a Newark hospital after she flew back from West Africa, even though she tested negative for the virus. She was released Monday and drove back to Maine after she threatened to sue.

"We're confident that selfless health workers who were brave enough to care for Ebola patients in a foreign country will be willing to take reasonable steps to protect residents of their own country," Mayhew said Tuesday. "However, we are willing to pursue legal authority if necessary to ensure risk is minimized for Mainers."

Robin Pinette, a resident of Fort Kent, Maine, where Hickox had originally planned to self-quarantine at her boyfriend's apartment, told NBC station WLBZ of Bangor that the situation is "completely terrifying."

"I feel bad for Kaci, because I know that it's got to be hard feeling ostracized somewhat," Pinette said. "But we're dealing with the whole community, not just one person here."
NJ and Maine went about it all wrong. Anyone who has seen "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" can tell who will be the loser here. The Expert Team should recruit Hickox and send her to fight Ebola in hospitals around the country.

Ditka Butkis please explain: if the flu is more contagious than Ebola, and kills many more people than Ebola (in ratios of thousands to one) then why not quarantine anyone who doesn't get a flu shot?
No offense but the flu argument is silly....Most can and have survived the flu many times with zero medical attention ..How many people have survived Ebola without medical attention..

ask the 40,000 people who die every year of flu how silly it is,

3 kids in Dallas on ECMO from the flu. Just in 2 of my accounts.

No offense but flu is a MUCH bigger threat to you and yours than Ebola.

Now how am I suppose to do that.....Again find me the numbers on how many people have survived Ebola without medical attention.

Let's compare the flu and Ebola if Ebola becomes airborne. Comparing it now is just stupid. If Ebola was to become airborne, millions die. Not thousands....millions, just in this country.

Again absolutely the most silly argument there is.....Why don't we let the Ebola people walk around without medical attention and see how many people end up dying.....Then we can make a fair comparison.

Not sure what the point of this is?

You are right if you are trying to further prove Ebola is much harder to get than the flu? Or that the comparison indeed is unbalanced in favor of the flu in terms of threat to you?

It amazes me that all of the Ebola naysayers are still on here instead of in West Africa helping those poor Ebola victims.....They seem like the most qualified candidates, with their complete lack of fear for this disease and all.....Or how about volunteering for bed pan duty at the hospitals where our Ebola patients are. You all could be put to good use right about now I hear they are having a hard time getting their medical staff to come to work.

It hurts when you say mean things.

No bed pans. Some Ebola patients can produce over 10 liters of diarrhea per day. You run a hose straight from their butt to a 100 gallon drum.

Does bed pan duty allow me to waste time on the FFA? If so, I'm interested.
