Great news for the Ravens. Troy Polamalu, his agent and the Steelers are paying close attention.

The Ravens and Pro Bowl performer Ed Reed have reached an agreement on a six-year contract extension which will make him the highest paid safety in the NFL, according to team officials.

Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome confirmed the agreement to The Sun Tuesday afternoon. The deal will carry through until the end of the 2012 season. Terms of the contract were not available, but according to a league source, Reed will make anywhere between $15-16 million in guaranteed money.

Reed, about to enter his fifth season, was the Ravens' first round pick in 2002. Last year, he had only 40 tackles, but missed six games with an ankle injury. He emerged as one of the league's top players in 2004 when he intercepted nine passes, had 80 tackles and was named the Defensive Player of the Year.

Reed had one year left on his current deal, but the new one might allow him to retire as a Raven.

"It is one of those things removed from his plate," Newsome said. "He is deserving. Now he can concentrate on football this season and for the rest of his career as a Raven."

Good move by the Ravens.

If they would have waited and Reed would have tore-off another monsterous '04 campaign, his guaranteed money could have approached $20-25mm.

This sets the bar for Troy's deal now. between Archeletta, Hope and Reed safties are fast becoming a position that you can't fill with little money. Good signing by the Ravens, he's the heart and soul of that defense when healthy, looking forward to seeing him at full speed this year.

This is very good news for the Ravens for a number of reasons.

Ed won't be "distracted" waiting for his big payday. And the money wasn't so huge that it surpassed the big payday Ray Lewis got a few years ago -- even though Ray is agitating for another deal, things would have been much, much worse if Reed got a payday that surpassed what Ray got.

Now, even though Ray still wants more money, the Ravens can point out that his deal from two or three years ago is still bigger than the one Reed got today.

The Ravens could be a nasty team this year. Ray missed 10 games, Reed missed 6, Dan Cody missed the entire season, and they were still #5 in total D. Now they've got a big DT and might even have an offense.

I've found that the "distraction" of a contract year is generally viewed as a positive thing from a production standpoint. :)
