As a Baltimore homer, I actually thought Ed Reed was having his worst season ever through this year's first 10 games.
He had a mysterious nerve impingement in his neck/shoulder that actually had him talking about sitting out the year in pre-season. But he went ahead and played and even scored a TD on an INT in Week 2. But he then pulled his hamstring -- he was already shying away from contact because of the neck thing, and then he couldn't run with the leg. It was the worst of both worlds - a slow safety who wouldn't hit anyone.
In the 8 games from game 3 through game 10 (a full half-season) Reed had no INTs and only 3 passes defended and just 14 tackles. It culminated in the loss to the Giants when he jumped on Brandon Jacobs back at the end of Jacobs' 60-yard run, got a piggyback ride for a while, and then was shook aside and thrown to the ground as Jacobs rambled for another 5 yards.
At that point, I thought maybe Reed should be put on IR, because he was hurting the team.
And then, in the 7 games since, Reed has 10 INTs, 3 TDs, and 299 INT return yards (including the longest INT return in NFL history), plus a forced fumble (which led to 1 of his 3 TDs, plus another 30 return yards).
Let me repeat that -- 10 INTs in 7 games. It's been amazing to watch and makes me think that there might be bigger years ahead for Reed if he can return to full health.
