Ed Wade (1 Viewer)

The biggest gripe with Wade was his inability to make significant in-season trades. He refused to deal guys blue chip prospects like Utley for Zito or whomever else.

Under his tenure their draft success was very good though.

zero playoff appearancestraded Schilling for LHP Omar Daal, RHP Vicente Padilla, 1BTravis Lee, and RHP Nelson Figueroatraded Rolen for Placido Polanco, Bud Smith and Mike TimlinI know Rolen wanted out of there very badly, but really got pesos on the dollar for a young Rolen entering his prime. It's all well and good that Wade can draft o.k.......however, it's hard to draft when you have no draft picks (last years Astros didn't have a 1st or 2nd rounder, and couldn't sign their 3rd or 4th rounders). Prupora had good previous success in scouting, however that obviously did not translate into success on the field. I'm not an Astros fan, but I think this was a poor hire. At least Wade is part of the good 'ole boys network down here that runs the team.

Well Utley, Rollins, and Howard are all home grown products that at one time or another he refused to trade. He also drafted Myers, Hamels, and Kendrick. I'd say a lot of the Phillies current success and one of the best infields in the majors is his doing.

He also traded Kevin Stocker for Bobby Abreu :useless:The Rolen trade was bad, but he was walking after that year anyway and the team used the money to sign Jim Thome. I'm not saying the guy was a great, or even a good gm, but there are much worse currently.

I'm not fired up, but there were worse choices available. Hopefully he can help rebuild the farm system. Trading Jason Lane to the Padres yesterday was an excellent start, regardless of who they get back in return.

Honestly the Rolen trade wouldn't have been that bad if the organization didn't A) sign David Bell to play third and B) trade Palcido Polanco for that hack Ughtih Urbina. Howard, Utley, Rollins, Polanco would be the best IF in the NL and Polanco would have been a good eye in that K heavy Philly lineup.

Urbina did his job for that year (they fell just short of the playoffs) but you're right - they should have cut Bell and slid Polanco over to 3b to make room for Utley. Never understood why they were so enamored with having Bell play out his contract.

I thought that Arbuckle was mostly responsible for the drafting, though?

I agree that the Urbina trade was not as bad as everyone now wants to make it out. No one knew he was going to turn out to be a murderer and they certainly needed bullpen help. You would think that they could have given Polanco more of a shot at third, but who really knew that he had that ability? You think the Tigers actually expected him to become an All-Star.
