Effect of Tiki's retirement announcement? (1 Viewer)

Do you think Tiki will continue to get good numbers, or do you think that the Giants will start to give more time to develop Jacobs now?

1. Let's see if Tiki retires. Talk is cheap. If the Giants are close to contention for a SB win, he might pull a 'Bettis".

2. If he does retire, chances are good that the Giants will draft a rookie or 2.

3. Giants will sign a vet RB or maybe try to lure somebody like Turner into the fold.

I think they wouldn't change anything. I think Jacobs can take the pounding and be a every down back. So they don't have to evaluate him say if he was a guy coming up on a contract year. They will still probably try to get a veteran to be a change of pace back through free agency, Chris Brown, maybe someone in the Jags backfield because it is crowded over there.

The NFC East usually is a tight division. Even if a team like Washington this year, looks like they don't have a shot at the playoffs, they'll beat up on the ones that do in December. Very tough division IMO. So, I don't expect the G-men or Iggles to clinch anything early. IF they did, sure Brandon could get work. Otherwise, no they're going to try and win it all.

There's an old saying that you rebuild in NY you get fired. It's not always true but more often than not. You play your best players, case closed. Way too many fans in the area and pressure to win, unlike most of the other teams

He's still the best back on the team. They'd be silly to sit him too much. Jacobs will get plenty of work.

Does Tiki have years left on his deal? I wonder if the Giants will ask for some of that bonus money back. Other teams have done it, but in those situations the team and the player haven't been really happy with each other.

Anyway, I hope Tiki enjoys working with the crew on Cold Pizza next year.

It is ridiculous to think that the Giants will "start to give more time to develop Jacobs now" just because Tiki is supposed to retire. It's not like the Giants are the Raiders and have nothing to hope for (i.e., playoffs).

This would not make sense logically. The Giants are fighting for a playoff spot. I think it's more reasonable to assume that the Giants will run Tiki into the ground this year because it is probably his last year. Additionally, Jacobs is developed enough already. RBs typically require less time to become NFL ready. Jacobs is already playing a valuable role on the team. There is no need for the Giants to change their formula mid season because Tiki might retire at the end of the year. Coaches and owners usually place most of their emphasis on winning now until they are mathematically eliminated from the playoffs.

IF/when the Giants are eliminated from playoff contention, he'll get more work.

Don't hold your breath, though. They could be in it until late in the season.
