(KFFL) Minnesota Vikings LB E.J. Henderson (toes) may miss the team's Week 5 game versus the New Orleans Saints because of two dislocated toes on his left foot. The team will not return to practice until Thursday, Oct. 2, and his status for the game is unlikely to come until then.

Henderson injury update

October 2nd, 2008 – 12:49 PM by Chip Scoggins

Brad Childress’ injury update on middle linebacker E.J. Henderson did not sound real promising today.

Henderson dislocated two toes on his left foot and still has significant swelling, according to Childress. Henderson, who is wearing a protective boot, did not talk to reporters as he left the locker room this afternoon.

“We’re still trying to get the swelling down in that thing,” Childress said. “It’s swollen pretty good. He’s [got treatment] over the weekend through Wednesday. The swelling is tough coming down. It’s hard making all the evaluations you need to make until the swelling comes down where you can really put your hands on it and move it around. At this point in time it’s a little too painful for that.”

Childress said the coaches have confidence in Henderson’s backup David Herron, who played about 30 snaps against Tennessee and collected three tackles.

“You really have to have the mentality in this thing — not that you’ll never make a move for somebody if you have an injury — but you have the mentality that other people step up,” Childress said. “We’re not the lone ranger in the National Football League with guys getting nicked or injuried or lost for a short period or long period of time. It’s truly a war or attrition. That’s why you have a 53-man roster.”

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP)—The Minnesota Vikings will probably be without standout middle linebacker E.J. Henderson this week. The swelling in Henderson’s two dislocated toes has not subsided since he suffered the injury to his left foot in Sunday’s game against Tennessee. He is wearing a walking boot to immobilize his foot and was not at practice Thursday. Vikings medical staff can’t properly assess his condition until the swelling goes down.Minnesota visits New Orleans on Monday night.

Although the middle linebacker is listed as doubtful and not out for Monday night's game at New Orleans, people with knowledge of the situation said Henderson is expected to be out for at least a month because of two dislocated toes on his left foot. Henderson was injured in the second quarter of the Vikings' loss last Sunday at Tennessee. He was able to return to the game but eventually had to leave for good in the second half.

OUch!! man thats not good news... time to start looking for plan B.

Just pulled this from a Vikings message board....

Vikings middle linebacker E.J. Henderson has two dislocated toes in his left foot, and the injury could sideline him for an extended period; Bernard Berrian is listed as questionable for Monday's game.

The Vikings could be without E.J. Henderson for an extended period.

"It's kind of hard to tell really what is going on structurally," coach Brad Childress said Friday. "They just can't get as good of feel as they'd like to."

The exact length of Henderson's absence likely won't be determined until the swelling subsides, and surgery could be an option. Henderson was wearing a protective boot when reporters saw him Thursday at Winter Park. He did not appear during media access Friday.

Henderson's loss is a significant one for the Vikings.

After two seasons of playing outside linebacker, Henderson returned to his natural position in the middle last year and led the team with a career-high 155 tackles. He also had a career-high 4.5 sacks and 14 tackles for losses. Henderson got off to another good start this season and was leading the Vikings in tackles entering last Sunday's game with 31. He also had a sack, four tackles for loss and a forced fumble in three games.

Henderson did not start last Sunday's game after being late for a team meeting on Friday. He was replaced by David Herron for the opening series and again when he got hurt. Herron is expected to replace Henderson on Monday.

Can you hear me now?

While second-year player David Herron is expected to replace Henderson, it will be outside linebacker Ben Leber who likely will wear the communication device in his helmet that will enable him to receive defensive signals from the sideline and relay them to teammates.

Because the Saints often use multiple receiver sets, the Vikings likely will spend a good portion of the game in the nickel defense. If that's the case, Leber and Chad Greenway likely will remain on the field, and Herron will be replaced by an extra defensive back. Leber spent time working at middle linebacker in the nickel package during training camp.

Any additional insight here from anyone? I can't afford to roster EJ for a month of inactivity.

Are there any secondary sources, in addition to Star Tribune, confirming an extended absence for EJ?

Just reported that EJ is now being placed on IR.

ORLY?This is almost as strange as the Crowell situation. Dislocated toes, unless it's the big toe, aren't a huge problem. You wonder if the big toe was involved or the dislocation was further back in the foot or if EJ was fighting surgery all week long and finally realized late last week that he wasn't going to heal quickly.

It'll be very interesting to see how the Vikings handle this. The early line would have to be that Ben Leber gets a significant bump in value, but it's worth watching the usage of David Herron and Erin Henderson very closely tonight.

Does anybody else think this injury might be of the Lisfranc variety?

What does this do to Greenways value going forward? Is he LB1 material?

I hate reading between the lines, but it sounds like they could not fully determine the injury until swelling went down. There just had to be some sort of structural damage aside from the disclocation if he is now being placed on IR. It's somewhat ominous for a foot injury to be worthy of IR treatment. Very unfortunate situation at a very critical (and thin) position, particularly when this looked like it could be a break out season for EJ.

Crossed my mind, hence the dislocation further back in the foot comment. I suppose an injury to that area of the foot could be referred to as multiple toe dislocations.

It helps Greenway, unless David Herron shows some serious between the tackles ability. LB1? Possibly low LB1 value, but at worst this should solidify the consistent LB2 value he was already showing.

How reputable is the source here? I just want to make absolutely certain before I burn a transaction.
I think this blog (and Zulgad in particular) is the best Viking beat writer source on the internet. Nothing's official until the team makes it official, but this is as good as it gets locally before that happens.

Assuming he goes on IR, should he be dropped or held in dynasty leagues? He's 28 this year and will be 29 next year. He's shown an ability to be productive, but should he be traded in for a younger model, if one is available?

Jene, how much staying power do you think Herron possess at the MLB spot?

Could Leber or possibly Greenway make a move to the middle in the future?

Herron got picked up in my dynasty league in which I have EJ and I made a play for Leber since the wire is so thin and I have the Vikings team.

May have to try and grab Tulloch if Leber doesnt produce.

I'd hold until more about the injury comes out. At 29 he'd still be young in LB years. He could be fine for another 3-4 years production easily, depending on the injury.

saw this on MFL

"(KFFL) ESPNews reports Minnesota Vikings LB E.J. Henderson (unspecified) will miss the rest of the season because of an unspecified injury."

Sounds pretty official now, from the team website:

http://www.vikings.com/NewsArticle_newsnotes100608.aspx

Speaking of the defense, assistant head coach/defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier’s unit received some bad news today – middle linebacker E.J. Henderson was placed on injured reserve and is out for the season. Henderson injured his foot against the Tennessee Titans last week.

David Herron replaced Henderson after he left the game last week and Herron will get the start tonight against New Orleans. The Vikings front office is likely mulling over what to do in response to losing Henderson for the year; some decisions will have to be made.

Needless to day, the loss of Henderson is huge for the Vikings. He set career highs in tackles the past two seasons and was in the midst of another solid campaign, perhaps even on the way to finally earning his first Pro Bowl selection. But that will be put on hold for now; here’s to a relatively quick recovery for E.J. and a stellar bounce-back season in 2009.

who was coming off the field in nickel when henderson played?

speculation is that it will be herron, now, correct?

Henderson had reconstructive surgery today.

He went to Baltimore, where Dr. Mark Myerson did the surgery. If you put his name into Google, you'll see all kinds of references to Lisfranc injuries, including times where he's consulted on other NFL players' Lisfranc injuries. As we started to hint above, "dislocated toes", when back at the base of the toes instead of the little piggy joints and near the big toe is one way to define a Lisfranc injury.

So...all signs now point to a Lisfranc. This isn't good for Henderson, but he's young enough to fully recover and has enough time to be ready for next season.

Time to talk about Leber with 5-1 and an INT so far. Where do we see him ending up going forward? It's probably too optimistic to expect similar number to EJ's, but we can we expect, will he have similar opportunity at least?

He's getting a lot of extra opportunity tonight -- 29 tackle opportunities already in the first half. That opportunity is good opportunity -- plenty of play outside the tackles and short passes against a Cover-2 scheme. He won't get this kind of opportunity every week and David Herron is still a bit of an unknown, but he's an every down backer at this point. That should give him LB3+ value with some additional weekly upside.Expecting Henderson numbers is asking a bit much, though he's going to have some weeks with seven or more solos for sure.

I don't expect Leber to put these kind of numbers up on a regular basis, but my choice to replace EJ is Leber.... not Herron.

saw Leber in on 3rd downs AND he's wearing the communications helmet. Picked him up and I was playing the team that had EJ. Killed them. I know LB's dont do well against The Lions but I did not see leber doing anything to lose the spot.

from Yahoo!:

Minnesota Vikings LB Ben Leber will be moving to middle linebacker in nickel situations.
