El Chapo, leader of largest drug cartel in the world, captured (1 Viewer)

Amazing

I'm sure most of you have heard about this, but I'm surprised there was nothing on it here. This is pretty huge considering the guy was considered the most wanted organized crime person in the world and his influence is amazing (not to mention his wealth, considered $1B and making Forbes list).

Will be interesting to see what comes of this.

Oh, and his wife isn't bad either!!

Even on an anonymous message board, I don't talk bad about drug cartel bosses, hackers or Vladimir Putin.

I love them all and think they are getting a raw deal.

There were ten more waiting to step into his position. And of course his wife isn't bad he was/is a billionaire. They may never find all the money.

Guzman - who is worth an estimated $1billion - was getting tired of living the safe life after 12 years in hiding, and let down his guard to enjoy his wealth in the resort town popular with American tourists.

I guess even with billions his life sucked enough that he risked getting caught over a secluded life in hiding.

Mexico is officially a narco state when the most wanted guy in the world can just walk out of prison 2x.

tell me what you'd do as a prison guard, when your entire family gets threatened with dismemberment and torture and beheading by dull knife, unless you escort their leader out the building.

of course he "just walked out".

thats the problem with catching him alive. He needs the Pablo Escobar treatment after he walked out of his prison

El Guapo?
No, El Chapo you ignorant gringo. El Chapo is a family man. He builds schools for the kids and gives gifts at Christmas. El Guapo hangs up a plethora of pinatas. EL Chapo will hang up you and your family if you call him El Guapo again.

All guards, spies, high police, swat teams, Navy seals, and the like of governmental security and military ranks, should be unmarried orphans. Just like James Bond.
They should be Unsullied.

They should have extradited him here if they had any concern of escape. Odds are the people that didn't want to extradite him were the ones pulling the strings from the beginning.

Speaking to reporters Sunday from France, where he is traveling on a state visit, Peña Nieto avoided mentioning the drug lord by name, but he said he was closely following news of the escape of a man who has been among the most wanted criminals in Mexico and around the world.

Peña Nieto said he was "deeply troubled" by "a very unfortunate event that has outraged Mexican society." He vowed that his government would recapture Guzman, step up prison security and investigate whether any prison workers helped the kingpin break out.

Interesring that this dude happens to be in France when this thing goes down. My guess is he'll be there finding reasons to stick it out for quite some time Meeting with the under secretary of agriculture, sure set up a meeting for next Friday, meeting witht he water commissioner of Nice..I'm available in three weeks

I can only imagine the heads that are going to roll now that he will be back out. There were probably rival gangs moving in, and people on his own side flipping.

From what I have read things werre some what "peaceful" when he was in control. The Sinaloa didn't do kidnappings like the Tijuana Cartel did.

Most of the killing & news headlines come when the cartels are fighting.

Do the drug cartels use social media much?

You hear a lot about groups like ISIS trying to recruit members via social media.

i think a fake twitter account for him would be totally awesome.

(and likely get that person killed)
A fake twitter for Chuck Norris & the Dos Equis guy would be totally awesome as well. I wonder if anyone has ever thought of that...

Read it was a tunnel that he used to escape
A mile long, fitted with a track for a motorbike.
A tunnel dug from the outside in? That took some manpower and some planning to get it to come up just where they wanted it.
They said enough dirt was removed to fill over 300 dump trucks. Pretty sure that doesn't happen without a lot of people looking the other way.
 Prisoners at Stalag 13 must have moved more dirt than that unnoticed. It could happen.

The tunnel came out at a house that was under construction. I imagine it wouldn't be difficult at all to hide the dirt. Also, when you consider that these guys built an entire tunnel network to support cross border traffic, they are probably experts at everything involved.

That would be a natural cover for a a crew going in with heavy equipment to dig the tunnel.

A prison guard named Sgt. Schultz was quoted as saying "I know nothing".

In prison a man will do most anything to keep his mind occupied. Turns out El Chapo's hobby favorito was totin' his tunnel out into the exercise yard, a handful at a time.
