Elder care questions (1 Viewer)

So my wife is the power of attorney for her grandmother. She has dementia and we have had to put her in a home.

The problem is, she has no money, no assets and no LTC insurance. The home we put her in is trying to push her into another home, saying she needs a higher level of care. We are trying to apply for medicaid for her but now we are getting vibes from the new home that they don't really have that level of care either. We don't want to go thru the process of moving her if just 2 weeks later they say the same thing "she needs a higher level of care".

Wth do you do? Apparently nursing homes don't want to deal with her and we (everyone in the family that could watch her) work full time and can't sit at home all day. Aren't there homes that specialize with this?

Yes there are homes. It took us a long time to get my fil placed. He is bipolar and something else. He is only on medicaid. It took us awhile. It's not the nicest place but it doesn't cost us anything. You should be able to find an assistant living facility that deals with mental issies

The Alzheimer's Association has a national call center (my daughter is part of that call group). You might give them a call and see what advice they can give.

We don't even know where to turn. Medicaid office - not helpful. VA office - not helpful. Homes are helpful if it's beneficial to them (not to mention they don't want to deal wuth granny). A friend suggested DHR. that'd be a start I guess, but kind of hard when we all work full time and we née my wife's income and you have to meet them between 8-4. I guess the lesson is everyone should buy LTC insurance. No one wants to help.

Sorry to vent but maybe I was mistaken when I thought there would be help for our older generations. They want us to pay. We aren't typical FBG's and have cash laying around.
