ElectricShaverGuys: Advice on a teens first... (1 Viewer)

glock

"Don't grumble, give a whistle!"
Full disclosure: I'm on the back 9 of life and still only shave every second or third day- if I have to. No hint of any "shadow" here. My first shaves came via a Norelco floating triple head set up before I switched over the blades in my thirties...

My boys both take after their mom- no, NOT in their facial hair!- in their blondness. Our first born is in his early twenties and rocking a fairly substantial kinda hipster beard. He didn't shave at all until he was a couple of years into college life.

Which brings me to my teen. Again- facial hair all blonde and almost invisible- but it is there. And he doesn't feel right not shaving it. The Mrs thinks that from his peer's viewpoint- most importantly those of the feminine persuasion- he could stand to shave.

He would benefit this XMas from the input of any ElectricShaveGuys out there...

TIA

"Good" electric razors are only good insofar as they can handle the rugged beards of swarthy Mediterranean types, Middle Easterners, and denizens of former Soviet Republics who hail from the mountains and use their facial hair to scrub tarnish off of cookware.

If you and the wife are both bringing the peachfuzz, just get him a thirty dollar Norelco or Panasonic and he'll be set for life. No need to bring cutting edge (lol?) technology into that equation.

Agreed. It's just that if you check reviews on teh Amazon, some of those apparently tear up the face. Just trying to get some endorsements here.

Yeah, I tried a couple electrics back in the day and found them lacking.

DollarShaveClub.com is the way to go.
. I just joined thus and have found that the blades suck. I have a heavy it Italian beard so having a good razor is key if that matters. I think I am going to dump it and move back to the mach three...

Braun. My Dad bought me one back in the day.

However IMO it's cool and ultimately the best shave and gentlemanly to boot to get a real blade at some point. The ladies do like the close, perfect shave and all the accoutrements that go with it. I felt like an adult when I got my first real razor. But keep the Braun handy for a pinch and it's a good place to start to avoid the nicks at an early age.

My son had a few wispy patches at 15, but he just brutalized his face with single blade disposables. He wanted to try electric, so we got him a cheap, battery powered Braun shaver; Braun M 90 Mobile Shaver. Worked great for him.

Now that he is 20 and his beard is much thicker, he stepped up a couple of levels to newer, more expensive Braun (don't know which one, me wife bought it for him). If he truly wants a clean, close shave my son uses multi-blade razor and shave cream. But that is seldom.

My 2 cents. HTH

Ha, haven't seen that. Your call, if it's Braun it's probably a good razor and if he likes the brand then maybe that helps encourage the transition.

"It's red so you know it works." Hilarious. Lutherman2112's rec and SID's was probably the most spot-on for fair-haired kids. I tried a single, disposable blade with no cream as a kid and it stung for days. Probably go electric now to wipe out the billy goat look on the chin and then, when he gets about a few more years, those really expensive Gillette blades.

Glock, I'm in your boat as well. I didn't need to shave until I was about 17. At that age, I bought a Braun, similar to those linked, and it lasted me 10 years. I bought another Braun and it lasted about as long.

My 13 year old is on the cusp of needing to shave. I will be getting him a Braun. I never had an issue with it doing anything to my face. I had acne issues as a 17 year old and the electric was the only way to go. No way could I do a blade. At some point I'll teach him how to use a blade, but he doesn't need to mess with that in puberty.

Did you try the top of the line ($8 a month if I recall) version? I find them comparable to Gillette's. Works fine for me, though I am somewhere between blonde peach fuzz and heavy Italian beard.

I'll throw my vote in for Braun too.

I had a Norelco 3-head for a while, but got a Braun, one of those "self-cleaning" ones, about 7 years ago. Works great. Love the cleaning feature. FWIW, I shave with a standard Mach 3 on Monday to start the week smooth, and then use the Braun Tues-Thurs, then let it grow Fri-Sun. I'm really thick around my goatee area, but not too thick elsewhere.

Wish your case was mine. When I shave, I shave regularly (Have a beard now for winter). I just haven't found an electric that works for me. My beard grows fast and thick, which is opposite of my son.

I remember a scene in a Flintstones episode where Fred shaves his beard, looks in the mirror, and his stubble grows right back. That's what my beard is almost like.

Double edge razor. Get him a Merkur and a sample pack of blades. Quick, easy and a good shave. He'll appreciate the old school charm of the razor and the cost efficiency of the blades.

Not unless he has to buy them he won't He's 15. Maybe I will check them out.

And the acne mentioned above is as good a reason to go electric as any at this age.

:blackdot: My son is 13. I've used an electric trimmer a few times now to remove his Billy Dee Williams stache. Will probably need to get a real razor (probably electric) by summer.

I forgot about the acne factor. My son's acne was bad. He was not deft enough to work around the patches of inflammation.

sorry his hearing isn't better.

One of the few things I learned from the FFA: unlike the men in razor commercials, many people shave in the shower. I switched from sink to shower about a year ago after 20 something years at the sink and haven't needed shaving cream since.

Yep, shower is the way to go. I don't even need a mirror anymore.

I woould go the shower route if I didn't have a mole on my chin that I nick everytime I'm not paying attention.

If I had an electric you could use in the shower, that would be a different story.
