I haven't listened to Mike Francesca for years, since getting Sirius. I heard him for about 10 minutes today and he made what I considered to be a typical stupid comment. He was talking about how the Jets are the big story in NY, which is understandable. But then he said if you asked the average football fan which QB and which coach they would want if they were starting a team, the two Jet choices would win by a margin of 2:1.

I hate the Jets but would still give credit when due. At this point though, I would pick Coughlin and Eli.

how 'bout you?

If I was to rank all of the starting QBs (not just on what they have done, but what I think they are capable of from this point forward) and all of the head coaches, I would rank Sanchez higher than Eli and Rex higher than Coughlin.

I didn't doubt that some people would go with Sanchez & Ryan. It was just Francesca saying they would be favored 2:1 that had me shaking my head.

What has Rex won exactly?

Didnt his father have some really nice seasons? What did he win?

This is not to say that Rex WON'T get a ring, but Coughlin has a ring and has a decade plus of near elite success in the NFL - in the playoffs more times than not with a chance at a SB in many of those years and he did bring it home once already (still a chance for another but I'm not holding my breath).

I am just not convinced in Ryan and the Jets come playoff time. They had a great run last year and have done nicely this year - but (as is the case with many teams), how far are they from 7-4 rather than 9-2? That said, you give them the wins they earned but it is not as if they have been gangbusters all season.

In terms of Sanchez, its WAY to early to tell. Lets see how he does now that it will be cold and windy - the weather you will need to win during, to make the Super Bowl in NY. Sanchez has the better skill set, and Eli makes some real ####### mistakes, but Eli has shown his entire career the ability to somehow win games (the Super Bowl run being the best example but he did it in the years leading up as well).

If you made me choose today, Im going Coughlin and Eli - they each have one in the hand, Eli has a legit chance to get another ring on his finger before he is done - he may lose a playoff game or two for the Giants in the future, but he may win a couple as he had done before. In regard to Coughlin, the guy adjusted to become more of a players coach. Rex's shtick is fun as hell, but can sustained success be a product of that style?

I am a Giants fan, so that must be said, but that's my honest opinion as of today.

It's really early to make this choice. Sanchez is in his second season as Qb. Rex is in his second season as coach. Both are doing well - so far - but it's hard to compare them to Coughlin and Eli. I could see Sanchez becoming a better QB then Manning, though he isn't there right now. (Both QBs make some really dumb decisions) But it's too early to tell.

Same thing with Coughlin/Ryan. Rex has been coach for a minute, Coughlin much longer and pretty successfully. But I think Rex gets hims players believing in him in a unique way.

I think the upside on rex or Sanchez is pretty high but right now, you probably go with a proven pair in Eli/Coughlin. Ask me again in a couple of years and one or both might change.

I can see how both might be more attractive to the average NY fan though - Sanchez is very personable and Rex is fun to watch.

For right now, I'd have to pick Eli as he's been there and done that. Sanchez still needs to prove he can bring it consistently - although I do love what I've seen from him the last few games. As to the coach, although Coughlin has been there and done that, I still went with Ryan as I think he gets more out of his players so I'll contradict myself to an extent.

That seems to echo the opinion of most NY fans I know - Jets and Giants fans.I guess it depends on what you are asking in the question. Who would you rather have (i.e. who is the better player / coach) or who would you rather have as a fan (not just in terms of who has the best chance to win). For example, some might choose the upside of both Jets options. Some might just not like Rex's style... the "that's not how I want my coach to be" type deal, while others might think Coughlin is a better coach but love Rex's personality. Some may say its a toss up at QB, but they would rather Eli's even hand and temperment vs the "pretty boy" - who knows. From that perspective it is a really interesting question and I could THEN see Francesca's ratio as more likely (I mean, who doesnt think Rex is "more fun" than Coughlin for example).

It also must be said that most here on FBG are a little more than average fans. A man on the street interview would probably yield different results, and might likely skew toward the two Jets since they get a lot more publicity.
