When true self-driving is approved by regulators, it will mean that you will be able to summon your Tesla from pretty much anywhere. Once it picks you up, you will be able to sleep, read or do anything else enroute to your destination.

You will also be able to add your car to the Tesla shared fleet just by tapping a button on the Tesla phone app and have it generate income for you while you're at work or on vacation, significantly offsetting and at times potentially exceeding the monthly loan or lease cost. This dramatically lowers the true cost of ownership to the point where almost anyone could own a Tesla. Since most cars are only in use by their owner for 5% to 10% of the day, the fundamental economic utility of a true self-driving car is likely to be several times that of a car which is not.

In cities where demand exceeds the supply of customer-owned cars, Tesla will operate its own fleet, ensuring you can always hail a ride from us no matter where you are.

So, in short, Master Plan, Part Deux is:

Create stunning solar roofs with seamlessly integrated battery storage
Expand the electric vehicle product line to address all major segments
Develop a self-driving capability that is 10X safer than manual via massive fleet learning
Enable your car to make money for you when you aren't using it

 
I wonder how uber, lyft and the taxi companies will compete with self driving cars that become taxis when youre at work.

Then again I wonder how many people will say no way im letting someone else borrow my car all day and fart in it, rub cheetos and ball sweat everywhere, etc.

 
Uber's valuation is strongly tied to the concept of them owning a fleet of driverless cars and summoned when needed, maximizing their utility.  Their model is "car ownership will disappear, with a car-on-demand model to replace it."  To beat Tesla, Uber will have to show that the costs of "on-demand rental" is cheaper than Tesla's "cost-of-ownership minus the revenue generated from rentals to others".

I think Tesla has the better model.  Car ownership is so ingrained in our psyche.  I cannot just see it going away.

My guess is that there would terms of service and in vehicle security cameras to create some type of contractual scheme to eliminate the problem.

Something like:

PASSENGER agrees that if PASSENGER masturbates in the VEHICLE, CARRIAGE OWNER may instantly stream the video online with PERSONAL INFORMATION identifying PASSENGER.

Well, I'll just have to own my own then. If I'm going driverless, this is kind of a big deal.

That's their end game. People just driving them is the bridge strategy. 

 
Seriously, how much porn will be watched during drive time when we get self-driving cars?  I can see having this conversation with my wife in 10 years:

HER:  It's a great house.  I love the yard.  And it's in a super school system.

ME:  I don't know, hon.  The commute is ONLY 35 minutes! 

 
Tesla doesn't have the cash to make this happen.  How many more rounds of financing are going to be supported with missed deadlines and no profitability in sight?

There are a lot of cultural hurdles to overcome.  We'll see if the millenials children will be willing to jump onto public transportation.

Iirc, the 3 rollout is where this company was supposed to start trending in the right direction, if not show profitability.

 
Tesla has never hit a production or sales goal.  I don't see them starting now.  

They have made a really cool car.  They don't make money on the Model S or X, so I don't see them making money on a car that costs 65% less.  Solar City is going to burn through cash they don't yet have and now they want to enter the heavy duty truck market.  I don't think we are very close to a car sharing society and autonomous vehicle approvals though local and state governments.  

Love the vision and the passion, don't trust the execution.

 
Seriously, I am glad that we have a crazy person like Musk devoting his time and energy to this development. We need visionaries like this instead of guys making more dating apps.

 
I just read yesterday that companies with self-driving cars will more than likely be offering free liability insurance with the purchase of their product.  Pretty cool. Unless you are in the insurance industry.
