I've never really understood this, but it's always seemed to me like this guy doesn't get the credit he deserves for being an incredible rapper.

Guy is a genius.

He's clearly more intelligent than 95% of the rappers out there, just based on his vocabulary, the way he puts words together, his musical sensibilities in his rap, etc. His writing is so much more lyrical than anything else out there. And he just is more musical. His pronunciation and rhymes are intricate and interesting, his lines are funny and it's all really creative.

Is it just me, or is this guy the best thing that genre has to offer these days?

Oh, and IN before the first hater poster to come in here and tell us that some of the more "underground stuff" is way better. Yo yo.

These days? No.But is he a genius wordsmith, with fascinating character portrayal through his music ? Definitely. He doesn't get enough credit because his song making ability/albums have never truly matched his talent, but ask any hip hop fan and he still gets a ton of respect... most just prefer the 'old' Eminem, not so much the whiny singing version that comes across these days.

I would say that the answer is both yes and no.

His 1st 2 CD’s were very impressive and while he wrote/rapped some tunes that made you think he was nuts they were very well written rhymes/stories. Great delivery and timing.

Since the 2nd CD his stuff has been very unimpressive.

i definitely dont think he is under appreciated. He is one of the highest selling artists ever. And everyone respects his lyricism. He has 3 classic albums. his last one sucked. But he will definitely go down as one of the top 10 MCs. But i think he is definitely not UNDER APPRECIATED.

My age group (early 20s now) practically worshipped this guy when I was in high school and college and rightfully so. Sold a ton of records, had every white and black kid wanting to be like him, and had a very solid movie do very well. He also owned MTV for quite some time. I say he's gotten the "props" he's deserved.

His voice doesn't do it for me. Not a fan. I respect his lyrics though, he's got writing talent. But I just can't listen to him for very long without getting annoyed.

Really? I thought The Eminem Show was his best work. "Square Dance" and "Til I Collapse" are two of the best rap songs I've ever heard. The last one did suck, though. Too much attempted comedy.

You ask two different questions.

Thread title: "One of the most underappreciated talents in music?"

Answer: No

Poll Question: "Is Eminem one of the best/most interesting talents in rap?"

Answer: Yes

thats why I went with yesno

I like Eminem, but I don't see how anybody can say he's "underrated." Unless you also think Pink Floyd, the Stones, and the Beatles don't get enough credit.

Let me clarify here. Obviously he is more appreciated in the mainstream than many. I'm talking about appreciation in terms of his ability from those "in the know." Seems to me there is a large contingent who refuses to mention Eminem in the same sentence as Tupac, Biggie, JayZ, etc. I like Biggie and think he had some pretty good stuff but, for me personally, Eminem can blow the doors off those guys as a wordsmith and rapper.

He appeals to a broader base than most rappers. I don't like the MJ thing though, that was horrid, bordering on Weird Al.

See my above clarification. I just get the feeling that, maybe because he's white, or because he has lots of shtick, he doesn't get mentioned as one of the greats. To me he's the best rapper I've ever heard.Again, I'm not a big rap fan. I was back in the days of the beastie boys, NWA, etc., and listen to some of the stuff here and there over the years, but mostly it bores me. It's the same old uninteresting crap, uninteresting beats, and unintelligent thugs. Eminem is a breath of fresh air in an otherwise stagnant genre.

This is true..But everybody in the industry, including numerous elite rappers have given him his props as a lyricist. Most hiphop fans would agree as well. He doesn't get mainstream respect because the average listener (non hiphop fan, a lot of his market) cannot interpret the lyrics in rap, much less multi syllable flow and wordplay. Of course lyricism and word play and other such technical aspects isn't everything in music, he cannot touch the song making ability, soul, and numerous other intangibles of Pac or Big.

I'm not a big rap fan either, but if you think rap is a stagnant genre, perhaps you're not listening to the right artists. As for Eminem being a breath of fresh air, I think you're about 8 years late to the party.

It's always been my impression that Eminem has a ton of cred in the industry. Who are you referring to as those "in the know"?

:goodposting: 'Til I Collapse is an amazing rap.

there arent many people who do not respect eminem. I think the only ones who dont, do so because of his usually cheesy singles that he releases. I think its because of this, that some dont give him the credit he deserves.

I agree with njxbean.

General question: is this ever the cool thing to say?

"Oh I LOVE that band. I definitely prefer their newer stuff though."

I agree - the dude is a pasty faced white kid who was married to a cheating wife and came from a low income section of Detroit and jumped into a genre dominated by African Americans on the coasts. Yet he was good enough (and therefore respected enough) to rap with Dre, Snoop, D-12, etc. Seems like his cred in the industry is very strong for him to be included in the biggest products.

I think the reasoning behind this is that bands very rarely re-create their sound. In this case people eat up their first couple of releases and get bored when the next few albums where the sound is recycled. Or this could work opposite if the band does happen to re-create their sound and the fans aren't willing to embrace the change (Metallica). I think people that are in to music can see through this though. I know there's a couple of bands that may have a decent first album, strong second one, and then taper off again since the can't live up to expectations (Queens of the Stone Age). To answer your question: Coheed and Cambria (even though I love their older stuff too, just not as much)

I prefer Alice Cooper's later stuff to his earlier songs, but that's just me and that's the only example that springs to mind. Also, AC/DC's best album is DDDDC which I think was their last album with Bon Scott.

Best lyrical song ever?

When I was just a little baby boy,

my momma used to tell me these crazy things

She used to tell me my daddy was an evil man,

she used to tell me he hated me

But then I got a little bit older

and I realized, she was the crazy one

But there was nothing I could do or say to try to change it

cause that's just the way she was

They said I can't rap about being broke no more

They ain't say I can't rap about coke no more

(AHHH!) Slut, you think I won't choke no whore

'til the vocal cords don't work in her throat no more?!

(AHHH!) These mother####ers are thinking I'm playing

Thinking I'm saying the #### cause I'm thinking it just to be saying it

(AHHH!) Put your hands down #####, I ain't gon' shoot you

I'ma pull +YOU+ to this bullet, and put it through you

(AHHH!) Shut up slut, you're causing too much chaos

Just bend over and take it like a slut, okay Ma?

"Oh, now he's raping his own mother, abusing a whore,

snorting coke, and we gave him the Rolling Stone cover?"

You ### #### right #####, and now it's too late

I'm triple platinum and tragedies happen in two states

I invented violence, you vile venomous volatile #####es

vain Vicadin, vrinnn Vrinnn, VRINNN! [*chainsaw revs up*]

Texas Chainsaw, left his brains all

dangling from his neck, while his head barely hangs on

Blood, guts, guns, cuts

Knives, lives, wives, nuns, sluts

[Chorus: Eminem]

##### I'ma kill you! You don't wanna #### with me

Girls neither - you ain't nothing but a slut to me

##### I'ma kill you! You ain't got the balls to beef

We ain't gon' never stop beefing I don't squash the beef

You better kill me! I'ma be another rapper dead

for popping off at the mouth with #### I shouldn't said

But when they kill me - I'm bringing the world with me

#####es too! You ain't nothing but a girl to me

.. I said you don't, wanna #### with Shady (cause why?)

Cause Shady, will ####### kill you (ah-haha)

I said you don't, wanna #### with Shady (why?)

Cause Shady, will ####### kill you..

[Eminem]

##### I'ma kill you! Like a murder weapon, I'ma conceal you

in a closet with mildew, sheets, pillows and film you

Buck with me, I been through hell, shut the hell up!

I'm trying to develop these pictures of the Devil to sell 'em

I ain't "acid rap," but I rap on acid

Got a new blow-up doll and just had a strap-on added

WHOOPS! Is that a subliminal hint? NO!

Just criminal intent to sodomize women again

Eminem offend? NO! Eminem insult

And if you ever give in to him, you give him an impulse

to do it again, THEN, if he does it again

you'll probably end up jumping out of something up on the 10th

(Ahhhhhhhh!) ##### I'ma kill you, I ain't done this ain't the chorus

I ain't even drug you in the woods yet to paint the forest

A bloodstain is orange after you wash it three or four times

in a tub but that's normal ain't it Norman?

Serial killer hiding murder material

in a cereal box on top of your stereo

Here we go again, we're out of our medicine

out of our minds, and we want in yours, let us in

[Chorus (first line starts "Or I'ma kill you!")]

[Eminem]

Eh-heh, know why I say these things?

Cause lady's screams keep creeping in Shady's dreams

And the way things seem, I shouldn't have to pay these shrinks

this eighty G's a week to say the same things TWEECE!

TWICE? Whatever, I hate these things

#### shots! I hope the weed'll outweigh these drinks

Mother####ers want me to come on their radio shows

just to argue with 'em cause their ratings stink?

#### THAT! I'll choke radio announcer to bouncer

from fat ##### to off seventy-thousand pounds of her

from principal to the student body and counselor

from in-school to before school to out of school

I don't even believe in breathing I'm leaving air in your lungs

just to hear you keep screaming for me to seep it

OKAY, I'M READY TO GO PLAY

I GOT THE MACHETE FROM O.J.

I'M READY TO MAKE EVERYONE'S THROAT SAG

You ######s keep egging me on

'til I have you at knifepoint, then you beg me to stop?

SHUT UP! Give me your hands and feet

I said SHUT UP when I'm talking to you

YOU HEAR ME? ANSWER ME!

[Chorus]

[first line starts "Or I'ma kill you!", ninth line starts "##### I'ma kill you!"]

[Eminem]

Hahaha, I'm just playing ladies

You know I love you
And what other rapper uses alliteration?

There's like two of those songs on each album -- something radio-friendly to get buzz going about the album. Most of his first three albums were nothing like the radio hits. The problem with "Curtain Call" was that it was an album full of those types of songs.

guy has a gift for stringing together words. wordplay is very important despite what some people think.

underappreciated? or underrated? no.

he had MAJOR buzz before his first cd release. it was widely anticipated by the "underground hiphop" community. roommate of mine got the album before it was released.. it was incredible. then they took it back in the studio or some #### and ####ed up a lot of the beats.

to me the first major label release was a letdown.

and i thought he did way too much to pander to certain audiences to sell records.. which is fine. just not my cup o' tea.

he's gifted there's no doubt. but a bit stale now and his 15 minutes have definitely passed. there are definitely better out there.

oh, and his production is bad. i mean the music he produces.. not Dre or Just Blaze, etc.

Em is a freakin' MASTER of emphasizing certain syllables or words and rhyming them with other parts of the sentence when you wouldn't expect the word to rhyme.

There's nobody better at it.

guy has a gift for stringing together words. wordplay is very important despite what some people think.

underappreciated? or underrated? no.

he had MAJOR buzz before his first cd release. it was widely anticipated by the "underground hiphop" community. roommate of mine got the album before it was released.. it was incredible. then they took it back in the studio or some #### and ####ed up a lot of the beats.

to me the first major label release was a letdown.

and i thought he did way too much to pander to certain audiences to sell records.. which is fine. just not my cup o' tea.

he's gifted there's no doubt. but a bit stale now and his 15 minutes have definitely passed. there are definitely better out there.

It's true, he certainly wasn't the first but he is a rapping monster, and not just simply lyrics.. vocabulary, rhyme scheme, flow patterns, annunciation the whole nine.Eminem as one of the greatest rappers of all time is a much easier argument than Eminem as one of the greatest hiphop artists of all time (say top 10, for arguments sake)

once he hit with the mainstream and became hyper-popular.. guh.. there's not a lot more annoying then everybody sweating something that they previously hated. (same thing happened with Snoop. everybody hated hiphop until Snoop hit and then EVERYONE was talking about him. playing the same singles over and over and over again. and they'd be the 10th best cut from an album. played repeatedly until i wanted to plunge off a bridge in to traffic.)

you couldn't go anywhere or talk to anyone (younger than 30 maybe?) w/o hearing eminem. everybody talked about how great he was and how cool his music was and how they loved him.

to me it was always like "yeah... he's great.. but you're getting eminem at about 60% of his potential. he's shackled because he has to sell records TO YOU. and you are ABSOLUTELY BEATING 'MY NAME IS' TO ####ING DEATH!!!!!! STOP IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

yeah it's elitist or whatever. i don't care. it bothers me when someone who is incredibly good at what they do can't get any love. but the minute they dumb it down they sell like crazy... and then you can't escape it no matter where you go. when metalheads and country fans are playing the SAME SINGLE over and over and over and over again it loses its meaning and just becomes unbearable.

no offense, but when guys like JB are saying they love Eminem... well... something has gone wrong.
