England becoming a Caliphate. US next (1 Viewer)

Belief is the blood of the soul. I give fantasy gymnastics more thought than God, yet belief is the most important part of me and the reason i've often encouraged others who were unhappy to go more deeply into their faith. Whether any god ever described is real has no influence on my sense that we are all to benefit from acting as though we're being watched by one. The awe i feel to have the chance to do this today keeps me small, makes me enormous.
What a knack you have for using so many words to convey so few points.  Let me guess - you were a teacher.  Perhaps higher ed?

HS dropout. Subletted a refrigerator box from a guy called Higher Ed once. He taught me a lot.

ETA: I do have an undersized penis and really dont feel very good about that, if you need somewhere else to go next.

You people that think a world without religion is the answer are very, very naive and do not understand your fellow humans very well.  Religion is used to do evil, not the other way around.  We are the problem, not our beliefs in God and the afterlife.  There are examples of evil behavior and horrible human rights violations from all points on the religion spectrum.
I think it's sweet that someone that believes in imaginary #### is calling me naive.  Just move on.

You sound just like matuski.  Such a coincidence.

Always funny to see atheists patronizing the majority of people on this planet who believe in the concept of a higher power.  Naive indeed.

Is this the thread where Higgs throws out a few anecdotes and calls it "evidence"?

Of course it is.
No, this is the thread where Lefties trot out the same old fantasy world of unicorns and rainbows.  Let's let in people regardless of their views and values.  I guess they'll fit right in with folks like yourself, so I can undestand it to some extent.

I don't think the number of believers is correlated in any way to the chances of a higher power actually existing.

It's a scientific fact that there are all sorts of undiscovered aspects of the universe and reality that could fit neatly within the confines of a higher power.  Will it look like a guy with a long beard in the sky, pulling strings and doling out wishes to those who ask nicely?  Probably not.  But many people who are religious today view that type of God in a metaphorical sense anyway.  I usually find it's the atheists who have this narrow concept of what God could be, and have thus rejected it.

What alias are you by the way?

Should we start kicking out people because of their views and values?  How about native born citizens that hold views and values you don't agree with?

The old moral relativism argument.  Absolute hogwash.  No, I don't have to accept any customs that I believe are immoral.  Islam's widespread misogynistic practices belong in the Dark Ages.  Gotta love the Lefty hypocrisy on the issue of women's rights.  So phony.
I agree with this. Too often some on the left are reluctant to criticize these practices in Islam. That's dumb.

If this is true - and there are some muslim men who won't let their women speak to other people - they should be criticized for it. Obviously.

I think there should be a basic set of values required of every citizen in this country.  And it's not too hard to find - the Constitution.

As Louis CK said in his latest special, anyone concerned about Christianity somehow being overtaken as the most powerful religion in the world, ask yourself one simple question:  What year is it?

:lmao:  My reading comprehension was is just fine.  Not my fault you can't communicate a thought clearly or succinctly.  Here's a hint - quit trying to sound smart.  And use punctuation every once in a while.  You can do it.
This is highly ironic :lmao:

I'm willing to bet I know a LOT more about theoretical physics than you do Chief.  The only one worth his salt on this stuff in here has been NCCOMMISH.
Doubt it, but you pretending you're smarter than people seems to bring you enjoyment so "sure, you got me there"

I also find some customs of that some individuals practice as immoral, particularly in the treatment of women. But it's not up to me to judge entire groups of people. You seem to think pretty highly of yourself, so you have no problem judging. That's pretty clear from your work in this thread.

I like how you post statements like this then claim that liberals are the real intolerant bigots

So basically there is a bunch of unknown stuff that no one could claim to know, except you who knows it.

In all seriousness though, I think most atheists are fine with the concept that there may or may not be some higher power out there that we don't yet understand.  They're guessing one way and fully respect those guessing the other way.  My wife and I are this way.  I'm an atheist.  She doesn't believe religion and their take on things, but she believes there is some kind of  higher power out there at the center of things that she calls God.

It's the bearded sky man and all the horrific and contradictory bible mumbo jumbo (which often shapes their policy decisions) where people lose them.

I'll sit here all day and have a rational discussion with someone about the kind of stuff you are talking about.  But once we wander into how those two penguins walked from Antarctica to the middle east to board a wooden boat to ride out the storm while that "loving" god mercilessly drowned a bunch of crying babies in their cribs prior to wandering back down to Antarctica and re-populating their species with some sweet golden incest....Well, don't expect me to take that any more seriously than you would if I proposed that Harry Potter's Uncle's Ghost created the universe when he mixed an expelliarmus charm with wingardium leviosa while using two wands made from the same Phoenix's feathers.

   Cmon Higgsy.  Give us another meltdown.  I know you have a few more left.

Just some backstory, Higgs went by General Tso.  He had a massive racist meltdown and deleted his account.  He's back on the message board and hopefully back on the wagon.

Define what you mean by higher power.

Most atheists are smart enough to know there is no higher power as any religion puts it. The idea is too ludicrous for even the slightest consideration

....and this is why I'm ignostic.  Setting these definitions of an entity that is beyond words is beyond words.

Gandalf is beyond words too.

Is his existence worth debating?

Just because any wahoo can think up any fictional entity they want does not mean their belief needs to be considered or even taken seriously as "their right" in any way

Religion is just socially acceptable mass mental illness

And I suppose it's also bigoted of me to mention the stories I hear from my wife at least once a week (she screens patients in  a hospital) where a Muslim couple comes in and she cannot address the woman because the man speaks for her.
He won't see the irony.

Nothing ironic or inconsistent at all.  I don't accept a culture that subjugates women and treats them as second class citizens.  Sorry.  Momma raised me to respect women.
Funny how the side that proclaims to be pro-women is the first to defend the same religion that relegates them to 3rd class citizens.  We're supposed to "tolerate" that.

Now, switch that to Christianity and they then spend all day telling us how terrible it is.  No restraint or "tolerance" whatsoever.  Weird.

Nobody, and I mean nobody, will ever be able to explain absolute relativism in the face of the worst evil while simultaneously condemning in the strongest terms those that won't bake a cake for a couple they disagree with.

It's utterly ####### gobsmackingly crazy.

Genital mutilation isn't spoken of in "polite" company, yet have a manger display half way down the street at Christmas and people are carrying picket signs over public religion.

Thanks Rock and Max.  You've restored my faith in this place.  Modern liberalism is replete with hypocrisy on the issue of radical Islam and its abhorrent treatment of women.  When the recent Women's March failed to invite a hero like Aayan Hirsi Ali to speak - one of the bravest fighters for women on the planet - they lost all credibility in my mind.  As Aayan herself calls them - "Fake feminists".

so you dont accept the historical treatment of women by most christian churches got it take that to you cant be a priest or alter server you give yourself to your man in marriage should not have a job should not get to choose if you want to use birth control should not get to control your body or your sexual preference and really why do you think you should be allowed in to a college or to have a job bank brohan

I could only imagine you alive, about 100 years ago, and confronted with something outside of the norm, like say..... Oh I don't know, maybe women voting?
