very complete game... he can run, hit, cover, has ball skills and some of the purest, most natural open field running ability i've seen from a safety, polamalu & reed included. i don't say this about every safety that comes down the pike, but he has massive upside and was worthy of the rare top 5 pick for a safety (i think kenny easley, bennie blades and the late eric turner & sean taylor also in this exclusive club)... definitely has the talent to be one of the best safeties in the league very quickly... could make plays all over the field and be a monster IDP, too...

He's my #1 dynasty defensive back. Some think im nutty for holding a rookie in such high esteem but there's really no other DB i'd trade him for straight up. I think he has the potential to become that good and why not roll the dice on a position like DB.

Rookie DB report is up (in sig).

I really don't see how Earl Thomas and Eric Berry won't become immediate fantasy starters, but the historical data says otherwise.

Question to all who know a lot more than myself:

How big (if any) do you think the production gap (purely from a points production standpoint, not NFL impact) do you feel will there be between EB29 and Earl Thomas? Does one team's defensive scheme favor safety production more than the other? For what its worth, I can add that KC didn't really do much to bolster its front seven, aside from the Crennel hiring (maybe he can play NT?).

Someone ground me in the reality here, because I obviously have a bias towards EB29. (or on draft day as he was known... "ERIC F*&KING BERRY!")

The unknown in this equation is how Berry will be used by Romeo Crennel.Berry as a do-it-all SS in the mold of Rodney Harrison or Sean Jones (two recent comps in the same scheme under the same coaches) behind an extremely suspect front seven has 100 solo upside with an average to above-average big play and coverage expectation. There's absolutely no reason to expect he couldn't equal Mike Brown's 2009 numbers as a floor in that role.Berry as an interchangeable FS with a lot of deep coverage responsibilities (think more Sean Taylor than Ed Reed) doesn't have nearly the tackle expectation, but would still have DB2+ upside.Thomas looks to be slotting into a FS role in a zone coverage scheme behind three very strong linebacker talents. That's a recipe for a 50 solo tackle season and a guy that's barely rosterable as depth in most leagues. That's a potential production gap that's the size of the Grand Canyon.

You mentioned he has an average to above average big play and coverage expectation. I've been following Berry since Highschool where he played QB for Creekside in Atlanta. Although he didn't have a true position coming into college, he was still a top five overall recruit coming in. Since the day he stepped foot on campus @Tennessee, he's been the best big play DB in college football. With his measurables and football IQ, there is absolutely no reason he won't be the same type of player in the NFL. Berry = Perennial Pro Bowl lock and exact replica of Ed Reed - book it. ELITE BIG PLAY ABILITY

Do you think I can get him with the 24th pick in a rookie draft? I'm hoping for McCluster with the 12th pick and Berry with the 24th.

I took Berr y 2.12, he has been going a smidget later than that is most leagues that I am in, McCluster has been going late 1st early 2nd. I drafted Berry,Thomas, and Nate Allen. DB was a area of need, and I think Berry will be a fantasy

stud, Thomas and Allen have a chance to be very good.

Unless your scoring is very high for IDP, I'd say yeah.

Sweet. I almost want to reach for him at 12 but hopefully no one else grabs him before 24.

That would be a reach, but trading up a few spots in the 2nd round wouldn't hurt.
this sounds right...if it isn't a startup, you can compare where the top safeties went in recent years (though that could be misleading, as he is the best one in a few years, and could get pushed up)...we got him at 3.5 (14 team league, about half a dozen staffers) in only league we got him in... once top three LBs (mcclain, weatherspoon & washington) & top DE (morgan) are off the board, he will be one of the first IDPs taken... possibly he goes ahead of some of them even, in some cases...i definitely wouldn't take him at 12th overall, but to reiterate, i think he is a rare, special talent, and if the above IDPs were gone already (i like brandon graham a lot, too), would be happy to get him around where you would be (contingent of course on offensive talent left, also)...

I think this is a great year, with a late slot in rookie drafts, to go defense/defense. get one of those LBs, then Berry in the 2nd. Let other people buy their lottery ticket on 2nd round WRs and 6th round RBs, and go get two starters for the next 5 years.
