Basically what ESPN describes in its statement.what's grantland?
Me too.Damn, just when I was about to check the site out for the first time.
what did it offer that this place doesnt?Basically what ESPN describes in its statement.what's grantland?
It's a bit more intelligent and in-depth writing than, say, "you got jacked up!" or Dan Lebatard's dad running around with his shirt off.

I've heard of the website and have seen the thread here. I thought it was a tv show review site. Didn't know it had anything to do with espn.I have never heard of it either.Schtick?what's grantland?

Grantland had A LOT of good writers. It could have survived without Simmons. But it needed more time to work its way into the public consciousness and establish itself as a destination site. But once Simmons left, the site was doomed.I know there were other writers involved. But for all intents and purposes, Bill Simmons made Grantland and pretty much WAS Grantland, correct? So once Simmons was gone ... Grantland was really on borrowed time, wasn't it?
Simmons was certainly the brand when it launched, but I think among those who kept visiting the site, it had much more to do with the people Simmons hired. Simmons wrote less and less. You might get 20 mailbags/picks columns a year. I'm sure many kept up with his podcasts, but I didn't. I would read anything Brian Phillips wrote. I generally read the site's top baseball, football, and basketball writers. I'm sure others followed a lot of the pop culture stuff. I really didn't.I know there were other writers involved. But for all intents and purposes, Bill Simmons made Grantland and pretty much WAS Grantland, correct? So once Simmons was gone ... Grantland was really on borrowed time, wasn't it?
Youse guys are either traveling in far higher or far lower circles than I am.I have never heard of it either.Schtick?what's grantland?![]()
Lots of very good writers there. It failed when Simmons left because all the talent Simmons brought in, began to leave or would be bailing asap.I know there were other writers involved. But for all intents and purposes, Bill Simmons made Grantland and pretty much WAS Grantland, correct? So once Simmons was gone ... Grantland was really on borrowed time, wasn't it?
I was so on the outs that I thought Grantland became a separate thing from ESPN a few years ago. Or did it start off separate, the ESPN picked it up later on, like NBC did with ProFootballTalk?Didn't know it had anything to do with espn.
The TV writer - Andy Greenwald - is excellent.Simmons was certainly the brand when it launched, but I think among those who kept visiting the site, it had much more to do with the people Simmons hired. How long does Silver's contract run?581 survived. Which is interesting
Doesn't make any sense to kill that site until after the presidential elections are over. How long does Silver's contract run?581 survived. Which is interesting

If you are interested go read Jim Miller's two recent articles - he covers it pretty closely. And why did they do this?

I love sports but only watch games. I don't care about sports talk or reading about it.
Probably realized the majority of the responses in a thread like this would be what they are.And why did they do this?
I read somewhere that Simmons hated the name Grantland but ESPN forced it on him. I get that the typical FFA shtick is to act like you are too cool to have ever heard of it, but it was one of the very few places where you could get thoughtful analysis on a variety of topics instead of hot takes.Everything will be alright in Nerdville as soon as BS thinks of a new hip/annoying name
Nah, I liked it for what it was, and I'm sure there will be a suitable replacement soon.I read somewhere that Simmons hated the name Grantland but ESPN forced it on him. Zach Lowe's NBA stuff was fantastic and I'm a casual NBA fan at best.
It's pretty ####### nerdy.I had no idea that reading and liking Grantland made me a nerd. But, when I think about it, that's kinda understandable that I had no idea.
Hi, Jzilla. I'm a nerd too. I just found that out tonight. There's a lot more of us than there are of you beautiful people. It's pretty ####### nerdy.I had no idea that reading and liking Grantland made me a nerd. But, when I think about it, that's kinda understandable that I had no idea.I'm a nerd.
You're not really a nerd until you're as clueless about being one as I am.It's pretty ####### nerdy.I had no idea that reading and liking Grantland made me a nerd. But, when I think about it, that's kinda understandable that I had no idea.I'm a nerd.
