Espn reports Larry Johnson clears waivers (1 Viewer)

At least he gets to pick where he lands. I for one wouldn't be suprised to see the packers, eagles or patriots scoop him up.

Johnson clears waivers, becomes a free agent

Posted: November 10th, 2009 | Jason La Canfora | Tags: Chicago Bears, Houston Texans, Kansas City Chiefs, Larry Johnson, New England Patriots, Washington Redskins

Larry Johnson, who was released Monday by the Kansas City Chiefs, has cleared waivers and is now a free agent, according to a league source.

Johnson is owed the roughly $2.3 million remaining on his contract by the Chiefs.

A league source tells me the Houston Texans could end up being his most likely landing spot. That’s the team I’d focus on as a possible destination. It makes sense for Johnson as well, with the chance to be on a winning team.

Besides the Texans, league sources say the Bears, Patriots and Redskins have also called to express interest.

That's too bad, since that's probably exactly what he wanted to happen. Now he gets two salaries this season, and he doesn't have to run behind the Chiefs' OL. All for being a jerk.

After evaluating Larry Johnson for the last two days, the Texans have decided not to pursue the free agent running back.

Johnson, who turns 30 next week, was placed on waivers by Kansas City on Monday, the day he returned from a two-week suspension for using anti-gay slurs and for criticizing Chiefs coach Todd Haley.

Johnson, who also was suspended in 2008, cleared waivers, making him an unrestricted free agent.

The Texans were considering Johnson because they’re trying to improve a disappointing running game that ranks 27th with an average of 90.8 yards a game.

The Texans evaluated running back Edgerrin James last week after Seattle released him. They ruled out James and now Johnson, which means they’re sticking with Steve Slaton, Ryan Moats and Chris Brown.

"We took all the factors into consideration — football, off-the-field issues, and we determined that it wasn't a good fit for us at this time," general manager Rick Smith said. "We've got confidence in our backs. When we come back from our open date, we expect big things out of them."

The Texans also were concerned about team chemistry. They believe they have a good thing going in the locker room right now.

The Texans return to practice Monday. They don’t play again until Nov. 23 when they host Tennessee. Coach Gary Kubiak was asked after practice if he might consider moving former Titans running back Chris Henry from the practice squad to the regular roster.

“Yeah, we’re watching Chris and (rookie running back) Arian (Foster) every day,” Kubiak said. “We can activate one of those players any time. It’s a topic that comes up. We’re discussing a lot of issues as we move forward.”

Kubiak declined to name a starting running back for the Titans game. Slaton started the first eight but lost his starting job to Moats after losing five fumbles in eight games. Moats started Sunday’s 20-17 loss at Indianapolis.

“I know you’re tired of hearing it, but I’ll watch them practice,” Kubiak said. “I want to see how Steve responds and comes back from this break. I want to see how Ryan responds and Chris being as fresh as he can be. It’ll be a day-to-day deal for me.”

Yeah, have to be careful of disrupting the chemistry of a team with a quarterback who's almost traded every week, a lame-duck coach who was the only option left for an egomanical owner and a gimpy running back that wears costumes during interviews.

Asked during his weekly appearance on WEEI if the Patriots would consider bringing in Larry Johnson, who was released by the Kansas City Chiefs today, Belichick replied simply: "I would doubt it."

Actually, I think he said that "he doubts that he would get him." Meaning, someone will probably put a claim in for him. Now I don't think the Pats will sign him, but they did just work out 3 RB's on Tuesday so I guess anything is possible.http://www.nesn.com/2009/11/bill-belichick...ry-johnson.html

What with all the genius-level game planning they are cooking up this week and all.

I'm pretty sure the janitor has more influence on Redskins personnel moves.

We really need another RB in chicago. Adrian Peterson is ok but not really a special every down back. Wolfe is too small to be one. When Kevin Jones went down, I thought for sure we'd have done something by now. We took a washed up Pace, let's take a washed up LJ and roll the dice again.

Why wouldn't Seattle be going afer him? I'm not a fan of the Seachickens but I do live here and watch them every weekend and If they think Jones and Forsett and the newly signed Rankin are the answer then this team will go right down the drain like they do every year.

Prediction: If anyone signs him (which I doubt), he will be released two or three weeks later.

He looks shot to me. He's 30 and looks slow.

I don't think so. remember he played very little in the beginning of his career playing behind Priest. Not much mileage on those 30 yr old tires.I think the pats is a no brainer. Especially considering the problems they've had getting a consistent running game going.

He had 416 carries in 2006 and 336 in 2005. Most RBs are backups in the beginning of their career, so that's not unusual. LJ has 1355 carries in his career, hardly low milage.

I think this has proven to be a non-factor with RBs. Guys begin to slow down at 30 or so, regardless of how much they've played.

LJ..on the wrong side of 30 for a RB, fading skills, bad attitude. The is only one team for him, the Oakland Raiders.

 They're middle of the pack in the league in terms of total rushing yards and their yards per carry are comperable to the Bengals and Vikings (slightly over 4 ypc). Unless Fred Taylor and Morris get put on IR and can't come back from their injuries, I'd say that LJ is extremely unlikely to end up a Patriot.

I grabbed him off of waivers and only dropped my bye week replacement defense. I am suddenly a very interested fan.

From Schefter's Twitter log

Larry Johnson's agent Peter Schaffer said he's "talking with many teams and two you would never guess." I tried to guess, he wouldn't bite

With Fast Willie Parker now benched Willie Parker (free agent after season), maybe Johnson could end up a #2-3 back for the Steelers. Stranger things have happened.

sure, he has less than half as many as LT or Edge. He still is slow and lost whatever step he had. Dude was a flash in the pan.

well, i'd never guess KC. maybe they're talking about bringing him back at the vet minimum. :kicksrock:

If you are just looking at whether Larry Johnson can help a team win or not, I suspect you aren't looking deep enough at the issue.

Kid picked the wrong issue to be a jerk about. Some team might pick him up, but they might as well start writing checks or making concessions now to angry gay lobbyists who will try to squeeze every dime out of them for controlled silence.

Gekko
I think you make some good points, and there probably are some teams shying away because of the issue. But I do think it will come down to whether or not he can help a team win, at least for whoever ends up getting him.

After that, the team's PR department can take care of the rest. Have him apologize and speak at a gay rally of some kind. This issue will be swept aside by that team, just like Vick's past crimes were by his team.

After all he's far from being the only jerk in the NFL.

Actually, if I were a betting man, I'd bet that Larry Johnson himself is a closeted homosexual (anti-gay slurs + assaults on women = self-hating homosexual in denial). And so if there are similarly closeted homosexuals within a team's management, they might actually recognize and sympathize with what Johnson has been doing.
