Ethics Question (1 Viewer)

Keith R

The Don
OK. I am the commish as well as a team owner. The add/drop requests have started to come in and an owner wants to drop a player I am interested in. I did not make a trade offer for the player prior to the add/drop request. I will not have a chance to acquire this player unless I get him to agree to a trade before the processing of the WW.

As commish, I am the only other one who knows that this guy wants to drop the player I want, so I am likening this to insider trading and think I have to take a pass on making the trade offer. But I did want some opinions on the matter. Thoughts?

TIA

Edited to add that by rule, the WW requests are processed on noon Thursday, so this request was sent in more than 48 hours before the deadline.

Don't make an offer if it's improper. If you are the only one who knows the player will be dropped, making an offer would be an ethical violation - especially since you will not be able to get him via trade. I think you know the right thing to do here.

If the owner put in a drop move, the player should be dropped. Having him rescind the move to trade is way no bueno.

Agreed. As commish, I don't even look at the add/drop requests until it's time to process them.

Yep. Why even look at them? If you don't look, you can't be tempted....But posting a note on the message board stating your looking to add a crappy WR would be appropriate.

surprised your site does not allow the the option of turning off your ability to see those before they happen....if it does....you should

Since we're talking commish ethics here, let me get an opinion on this.

Had another owner send me an offer on a top 5 WR, had not advertised this guy at all. Next day I get an offer from the commish for the same WR and can tell from his trade comments that he has seen the other offer. I check and the lockout is off, so I privately call him out and he admits to it, using the lame excuse of watching for collusion. I inform him that I will finish the season but will not be back next year. He has since turned the lockout on.

Should I, or would you, post this on the league message board for the rest of the league to see?

How vested are you in the league? I would either tell them why you're quitting, or--if you prefer to continue--(privately) make it contingent on that commish stepping down.And--get a software package that prevents this.

The Dos and Don'ts of this situation.

DON'T make a trade based on information that you obtained through your offices as a commissioner when said information was not readily available to everyone else.

DO ridicule the owner in question mercilessly for being idiotic enough to drop a rosterable player without first making even the most rudimentary effort to shop him.

that would be clearly shady and unethical --- basically, just don't ever use the position to your advantage in any way.however, there's nothing stopping you from making a trade offer to the new owner once the player clears waivers.

Commish's that also play in there leagues as Owners should have the Commish Lockout on.

Some may not know what the lockout is for, but it prevents you from seeing owner initiated transactions.

And its only fair.

Make the trade offer known, post " I am offering X team Y player for Z player." on the league message board. Don't put yourself in this position again.

When you see the offers, you have compromised the integrity of the league without evening doing anything. What I mean by this is that you could offer a trade, obviously that should not be done by the posts above, but with you knowing a player you like is being dropped maybe you just do not make a claim yourself, so you have a higher waiver priority now (if your league runs multiple waivers per week).

The best way is to hide these, I personally do not want people to know that I was even interested in a player if my waiver claim was not successful. Why do you see them anyway? Do you allow the system to run the waiver process or is this one of those leagues where the commish actually approves all moves?

If you approve them, maybe there is a reason you do not trust your other owners, I would find a way to hide the messages until after the time frame for moves and/or your moves are done...but know, once you look at them every move you do can be considered as compromised.

One last question, do the other owners know that you can see their claims ahead of time?
