Is it ethical to take out your players that have yet to play to protect a small lead? The league allows for these types of moves, what do you think?

For example, heading into Monday Night Football you have a 2 point lead 75-73 and have a kicker and a DST to play. There have been instances, although rare, that negative points are scored by a defense. Do you take out your guys to ensure the win, the money, and the title?

if the league rules dont prohibit submitting an incomplete lineup, i have no problem with this.

However, i would make sure that none of the players involved (either on your team or your opponent's) had any plays that could be changed. I'd hate to lose a game because of a scoring change after sitting my defense for fear of negative points.

Ted Williams' would roll over in his grave head would roll over in its tank.

edit to fix

I think it's fine, though there's a bit of a risk of a scoring change hurting you.

I would say any league with rules that allows the possibility of negative scoring has to accept this as a consequence of those rules.

If the rules don't prohibit it, it's not unethical but it is a candyass move and karma will come back to bite you in the ###.

What a ridiculous statement. All you have is downside (again, absent scoring changes), it would be stupid to play the guys. Set up your league to freeze all rosters at first kickoff if you want to prevent this, but asking someone to risk a win is nonsense. If your opponent gets upset about it, it's only because he knows that you playing the guys is his only shot at victory, which is a clear example of why you should do it.

A kicker and defense combining for negative points? I doubt it... and I hope its the Vikings D... who would play the Bears D in this match-up?I think you're worrying about nothing... I'd skip the marginal tactics. If for any reason not looking like a total wuss.

Totally OK. For example, guy in my league has ADP to go tonight, if he had the lead it'd make sense to bench him or drop someone to pick up an RB announced as inactive in the pregame.

Sigh. I get tired of people telling people that their opinion is wrong or ridiculous.Let me dumb it down for you.

In my opinion it is not unethical, but I feel it's a bush league move. I think you should start what you think your best lineup is every week and roll with that. I think it's bad form to try to throw a game for playoff seeding or to pull guys once you think you have the week won.

Your opinion may differ, but that doesn't mean that any of us are wrong. There is room in this world for varying points of view.

In my opinion there is nothing bush league in making this move when you have a victory in hand. In fact not doing it is actually kind of stupid. As Chase mentioned this is no different than taking a knee at the end of games to run out the clock. While I don't agree with intentionally tanking games putting in lesser lineups to intentionally try to lose games for better playoff matchups often results in hysterical consequences.

Valid.

Those voting that it is not ethical to reach your ultimate goal (i.e. winning the Championship game) by pulling players, please report to any/all "Colts pulling starters to reach Championship" threads immediately. TIA.

Honestly, how many people end up losing games because their player left to go gets negative points and goes out? Is the chance that significant enough that it matters? Especially when you got stud players left to go like AP and people pull them out because they are afraid AP would get negative points. To me that seems such a low chance that I wouldn't even bother... I think a person is just as likely to lose with a small advantage due to a point change (see Kurt Warner) as it is for your player left to score negative points. And when you have an even bigger lead what does it matter? Is your guy really going to get -6 points? Why do you have players on your team playing when they will give you negative points?

good point. warner's td to bolin getting changed is rare, but before doing this i would go through the stats of both teams and look for possible scoring issues.

In my one league where defenses can and often do score negative points, we have a rule. Don't start a D, get ASSIGNED the worst FA D team in the NFL for that week.

Get a better rule set. More bullet proof. Then you won't have to worry about "tainted" wins.

I don't know. I would prefer my league to have rules about having an ineligible lineup if all positions are not filled by the start of the final game of the week. If you knowingly start a guy who won't get touches but he was eligible to be on your roster, then so be it. This is different to how I feel about teams resting starters or taking a knee.
