Existing Dynasty experimenting with IDP (one DB starter) (1 Viewer)

So we have a 3 year old dynasty league and we've decided to add 1 DB (CB or Safety) position as an experiment to see if we want to go more IDP. I figure most people will draft 2 or 3 total, so my question is when is the right time to start taking them in the rookie draft? I've traded around and have the following picks, so I'm curious where people here think the run will start.

I have:

1.01

1.03

3.09

4.12

5.04

6.04

7.04

If a trade gets accepted I'll move the 6.04 and get 3.09 and 5.03 (other players in the trade of course). I'm working on the 3.09 because I think I might need it for DB, with 4.12 being too late, but I'm interested in others thoughts.

So has been through anything like this with a draft, I could really use some help.

I'm guessing this is a 12 team league?

Out of this rookie draft, to get the top pick CB Patrick Peterson, esp if your league has return yardage, you could get him in the late 3rd. Brandon Harris (HOU) Jaiquawn Jarrett (PHI) will be available in the 4th to 5th rounds, maybe later. I'm thinking though since this is a new deal for your league, there will be a focus on DB's and they will not likely slide.

To be honest, since there are only 2 or 3 really good candidates for DB IDP success in this draft, wouldn't it be better to get them from the veteran pool? How is your league handling that aspect?

A couple of sneakly deep sleepers if you want to slough the position (which is always the no.1 rule if your league does DB's full time in future), have a look at either of the following:

Ras-I Dowling

Marcus Gilchrist

Rod Issac

Robert Sands

Richard Sherman

Ahmad Black

Korey Lindsey-Woods

Need more info. Is this just rookies? or are existing free agent DB's available as well? How are DB's going to earn points compared to offensive players?

If it is all DB's then I would wait a long time to draft my 2-3 DB's (depending on scoring)

There are a ton of DB's available in the NFL. Sure there are half a dozen that are considered top of there game, but guys like Pollard may move in free agency and there is no guarantee that he will land on a team with an equally crappy pass defense.

Draft is this year's rookies at the offensive positions, and ALL DBs since none of the existing players have been drafted. So it's kind of a mix.

12 team league, I think the points for them will only be INT, Tackle, Assist, Sack, and maybe passes "defensed" although I'm not sure on that last one. We're just dipping our toe in this year and we'll see where it goes. My guess is it will be limited to the safety and cornerback positions, but again I'm not sure exactly yet.

OK, unfortunately we still need more info on the exact scoring. Usually your Safeties are going to be of more value than a cover corner. But it depends on how the scoring is set up. It would be similar to drafting offensive players. If a QB gets 6 pts per TD and a RB/WR gets 4 pts. Then your QB is going to be valued more.

Keep in mind that DB's are one of the deeper positions on defense. There are fewer blue chip Defensive Tackles. But, since each NFL team starts 4 Defensive backs you will have a pool of 128 starting players to choose from. If this is a 12 team league, every team should be able to have an above average starting DB. Since your only starting 1 defensive player.

ok we had our draft and I got TJ Ward and Jaiquan Jarrett (figured I might as well get a rookie since none of us know the position yet).

Here's scoring:

Fumble Recoveries (from Opponent) 1-10 2 points each

Forced Fumbles 1-10 2 points each

Interceptions Caught 1-10 3 points each

Passes Defensed 1-99 2 points each

Defensive Tackles 1-99 1.5 point for every 1

Defensive Assists 0-99 0.5 points each

Sacked a QB 1-25 3 point for every 1

Safeties 0-10 2 points each

Number of Defensive TDs 0-10 6 points each

Is Ward good enough to start or do I need to go work the waiver wire/trade angle?

If all DB's are in the draft, save them for your last picks. DB will be super deep so focus on other positions.

The only time I think you should pull the trigger earlier in the draft is if an absolute stud is staring you in the face at great value.

nevermind - you drafted; nice guys to have for sure, good work.

Ward is good. YOu probably only really needed to draft him though. DB is so deep and only needing 1 is something that can be DBBC or just pickup a 1 week filler for Wards bye week.

This helps because we cut down from 26 to 24 before the season starts. Not only is the DB position deep, apparently theres not much consensus because we had players getting drafted that i had down lower than 18 on my list or not on it (i took top 12 safeties and top 12 CBs based on our scoring and sorted by points). I have to assume they got projections from other sites because we're almost all new at this.

DB is one of the harder positions to evaluate after the truly elite. and they're not covered by most FF sites so there's a lot of people just guessing and taking players they recognize. For example, Champ Bailey is one of the best in the game but for FF he's somewhere below the top 100. Some of the best scoring DBs weren't even rostered at the start of 2010 in my large IDP league (Terrell Thomas, McCourty, and Verner to list 3). I (and most others) prefer to take a stud S who gets tackles. I'm happy to keep Polamalu in my lineup even if he won't be the top FF DB, I know he'll score fairly well. In the same vein, Ward's a perfect player to have.

I wouldn't have drafted any. There's a big pool of decent DBs. Someone would have jumped out at you in preseason, or if not you could have just picked up a free agent like Erik Coleman, Donte Whitner, or Chris Hope just before week 1 and been fine at the position.
