'Expert' Draft I just took part in... (2 Viewers)

Chris Smith

The Head Goon!
No, this isn't a 'Rate my draft' thread as I already know how I draft and I almost always walk away pleased with who I ended up with on my roster.

I find it is always good practice to take a look at completed drafts to see where players were taken and different draft strategies that took place. Many of the sites were of the new variety and it is always fun to have new guys to compete against.

There were some smart picks, some bizarre picks and some picks that simply left me scratching my head in wonderment. Check out the draft and you can read commentary from several of the sites as well clicking through the link provided below the draft

Start 1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 FLEX (RB/WR/TE), 1 TE, 1 K, 1 Def

performance scoring with small bonuses for 100 yards rushing, 100 yards receiving and 300 yards passing... Pretty standard stuff...

My roster for those interested...

QB Michael Vick, Matt Hasselbeck, Byron Leftwich

RB L. Tomlinson, B. Westbrook, L. Suggs, Frank Gore, R. Moats (backup Westbrook)

WR Chad Johnson, Michael Clayton, Santana Moss, Reggie Williams

TE Alge Crumpler

Defense Buffalo Bills

Kicker Jason Hanson

One last thing (Free agency is first come, first served)

Enjoy.

You can start 3 RBs in this? Those guys who picked other positions in the 1st had no business doing that. Someone can maybe make a case for Manning based on his VBD and the perceptions from last year. But no way in heck does Moss or McNabb belong in the first round of an "experts" draft. Not in this format. And make sure to remind me not to go to fantasyfootballresearch.com also. I realize there is a place for the "try a different strategy" thingy. But puhlease, they broke the cardinal rule of drafting -- know thy rules. There is no excuse for Bennett being their RB1. None. That is simply unexplainable.Nice job with you, although I am suspicious of Suggs that high. But that's a personal preference. As I was reading the 1st and 2nd rounds, I kept thinking to myself, "He BETTER pick Chad Johnson at 3.1 unless he gets nabbed first..." Overall, nicely done.

I was disturbed at how high QB Collins went (3rd round). Plummer and Favre both went in the 7th (much better value for what will probably be equal production). Good draft, but I would have skipped Vick.

3 QBs taken within the first 16 picks. Gonzo at 2.02. I can't put much stock in the early rounds for that alone.

One thing I'm curious about was the Vick pick. I feel like you did better when you took Palmer & Leftwich later in the draft. With that in mind, you could of taken Duckett for more RB depth as an example. Do really feel Vick is a good value that high this year? Does the scoring system suggest he's better for this league? Like I said just curious because I feel Vick is overrated.

that guy at footballsearch said this:

[Todd] All teams drafted well. Basically there are two strategies to go with. 1. pile up the best RB's in the league and try and win, and 2. play the numbers, and pick the best team. Apparently most of you agree with the first option. Of course if that worked we'd have 7-8 winners. I prefer taking chances, and playing the numbers. My goal is to win the Superbowl, and if so win the points championship.

I value RB's, but never in a million years have I ever seen so many RB's go so quickly.

Never seen so many rb's go so quickly? This guys first draft or what?

Oh and you start 3rb's?

Fantasyfootball search is not going to last very long in this business. what a terrible draft by him. Another good draft by footballguys.

 But :lmao: at Chris' commentary on that pick:

"Kerry Collins – 31st overall. Please pass the kool-aid over to me. I heard it is loaded up with alcohol."

15 spots behind Culpepper, whom he will outproduce = steal

I'd be very uneasy at RB2 (Westbrook/Suggs) and WR3 (S. Moss/Reggie Williams) with that roster, but the combination of your three-headed QB, LT2 and Chad Johnson should easily make up for any shortcomings at those two positions. Nice draft, Chris! As to the question about anyone being an FFL expert, it's all just talk until some folks prove they can walk the walk....AKA put their results and track record against other Great Whites out there for the world to see......

I wondered the same thing. Has he ever been in a fantasy draft with folks that have done this before. Almost every league I have been in has seen running backs jumping off the board in exactly the same fashion. Actually that's not true, In the mid-1990s quarterbacks and kickers were going in the first few rounds LOL. Both players he took have fantasy ability but he really needed a couple of Joe Bryant's VBD article.

Many folks know I am pretty high on Vick this season. You can read my thoughts on him in the magazine but I think his upside makes him an attractive pick. I am not going to repeat my entire argument but in a nutshell...The dude threw only 321 passes last season and finished 12th overall. The Falcons defense overachieved and I expect them to play from behind more often this year, resulting in more passes. With more passes comes more fantasy points and I believe he will definitely ouplay a 72nd overall draft ranking...

I believe I was more inclined to take a 3rd quarterback though because of having Vick. Now if he does disappoint I can run with two other gifted quarterbacks and not look back (actually Hasselbeck and Leftwich)

I was very surprised with some of the drafts but many of the guys did very well and it will be a competitive league.

I happen to like Westbrook and Suggs but I hear what you're saying as there is some risk there. Overall though, a roster I am happy to go into the season with.

Is someone really an expert just because they own or work for a fantasy football web site
It doesn't matter if they have a website or not. An 'expert' is a term used for somebody who knows his league rules, understands all of the ins and outs of fantasy football, understands the game of football and has a solid gameplan in place to execute his knowledge. Many of our posters here within the forums our as much of an 'Expert' or more than many folks running a website.

My fellow footballguys qualify as they know what is happening around the NFL, understand the strategy of fantasy football and always come to a draft prepared.

Drafting well is an art-form but you should only have the 'expert' label if you have earned the title over time You want an expert... I present to you...

David Dodds.

From Mr. Football to here, he has earned his rep and then some.

I let the other guys from the draft know there is a thread started here. Perhaps they will stop by and join the discussion.

Believing Collins = steal at # 31 in a draft where you can start 3 RB and 2 WR or 2 RB and 3 WR is :lmao: which was likely brought on by several of :banned: :banned: :banned: :banned: during a great Saturday night and was mentioned just before this stage :X

and in the morning after, wearing one of these

:bag:

when you realize you called him a 'steal' at that point in the draft.

The really scary thing is this guy not only is drinking the kool-aid he's trying to bottle and sell it.

Lelie was taken at 6.04. Interesting. Every mock I see has him going quite a bit before his current ADP on antsports (currently 7.11, which is up from 8.03 a week ago), with a high of 6.06, low of 9.01...I might try to trade down in the 5th and up in the 6th to snag him closer to where he should be drafted....I dont think he will be there at 6.10 by late August...Nice draft Chris, but Id be a bit leary of the RB3 situation as someone else said...if Westy or LT go down, you may be hurting, and I wouldnt have taken a flier on Gore....Im a 9er fan and just dont think anything good will come from that team this year, but it IS a low risk pick, and ya just never know. Lastly, I would have been more comfy waiting and taking Houshmandzadeh as my WR3 over S Moss, but to each their own.Well done.

Man, the one-hole is golden this year.If Kevin Jones had fallen one more spot, that would have been scary.I think that FantasyFootballAdvantage dude did well. And Rotoworld looks good, too.

What's going on everyone, I'm Smitty, the owner of FantasyFootballXtreme.com. I thought I'd swing by and give my take on the draft. First off, there were a couple crazy picks, I'm not going to keep beating a dead horse on that issue, so I'm going to give my short list of steals of the draft...#1 Ranked Steal: Kevin Jones @ pick 23 overall (taken by myself) - That was insane value! I was very pleased getting Holmes and K. Jones with my first to selections. #2 Ranked Steal: Tiki Barber @ pick 20 overall - No one is giving this guy the credit he deserves. That is amazing value!#3 Ranked Steal: Jamal Lewis @ pick 12 - Jamal will bounce back this season and once again become a fantasy force. This guy should be a top 6 pick in every draft, every format!#4 Ranked Combo-of-steals: Hasselbeck/Vick/Leftwich all going to Chris Smith without using anything earlier than a 70+ pick. That is how you draft a QB!Anyway, I'm sure I'll respond and post more tonight, I don't want to make my first post about this draft too long... real quick:My squad:Carson PalmerDrew Brees=========Priest HolmesKevin JonesDe'shaun FosterLarry JohnsonEric SheltonNajeh DavenportChester Taylor==========Torry HoltLarry FitzgeraldDavid GivensTroy WilliamsonSamie Parker==========Ben WatsonHeath Miller==========Waiting to pick up a K & Def due to our first come first serve free agency rules>> I would love to hear what all of you think of my squad and how it measures up to the rest, in depth and everything else. Thanks for setting this up, Chris, I will be on it for a bit tonight reading and responding.

>> I would love to hear what all of you think of my squad and how it measures up to the rest, in depth and everything else.

Thanks for setting this up, Chris, I will be on it for a bit tonight reading and responding.
I like Kevin Jones pick too.Tiki's a little late maybe some value there but a steal is kinda overdoing it IMO.

Jamal just got out of jail, 12 isn't so far off.

Yeah Chris did well with QBs but why does he need 3? Well everyone's got their own shtick, I just never agreed with that one.

I really like your RBs but you soooo paid for it with your WRs. Lacks balance.

No results yet to gauge TEs, think I would have grabbed a sure-bet.

I think Chris owned this draft and some complete drafts and some picks just make me  Hopefully the league will work out well for you. I think there is a big difference between FF talent(if such a thing exists) amongst the drafters. Who cares though, have fun. I see you just registerred so welcome here. Hopefully you'll post in other threads so we can praise and insult your thoughts like everyone else ;)

Thanks, Bri!I appreciate the welcome! On my WRs: I do think that in a league where you only have to start 2 WRs, Holt and Fitz will make a fine duo - I do wish i had a better 3rd wr for byes/injuries, but I believe that getting Brees and a few of my handcuff-backs was more important when wrs were still available. Thanks for your comments! While we are at it, what does everyone think of Foster/Shelton as a flex? I believe that the combo of the two will be very solid, as I don't see S. Davis (knees) or Nick Goings (playing fullback) taking carries away from either one. Shelton, who stands 6'1 - 240lbs, scored 20TDs in college last year (on only 143 carries)... I'm excited about that kid and think that Carolina drafted him for a reason.Anyway, I would love to hear some thoughts on my flex and any other comments all of you may have on our draft!

Since you are looking for comments, not a rating ...CJ over Holt?Clayton over Ward?I like your Vick pick, but not then the pick of Hasselbeck even though you got good value.Buf in the 11th is a stealThose other drafters suck

more evidence that the first spot is gold this year.

pretty nice draft, Chris.
This was my feeling last year and I think it paid off well. Looking at some Mock drafts and my rankings, I am thinking picking at 1.12 would provide the most value. While the first 5 picks are really nice, I like the WR options/value available at 3.12/4.1. Its early, but this is what I see.

Chris...please forward you draft results and commentary to Dodds and save him the trouble of doing his perfect draft article this year. You definately hit a homerun. The only thing I would have done differently is to pass on Lefty for Calico.

Interesting - I just about finished a mock from the 12 spot and also got LT / Chad Johnson but grabbed Gonzo who was long gone in this draft.... Mine was only start 2wr 2 RB.Funny how RB's flew off the board and then Staley was ignored for a while....My Team: (So Far):QB Steve McNair TEN 9.01 10 QB Brian Griese TBB 10.12 7 QB Joey Harrington DET 12.12 3 RB LaDainian Tomlinson SDC 1.01 10 RB Duce Staley PIT 4.12 4 RB DeShaun Foster CAR 5.01 7 RB Eric Shelton CAR 8.12 7 RB Labrandon Toefield JAC 11.01 7 WR Chad Johnson CIN 3.01 10 WR Eric Moulds BUF 6.12 9 WR Muhsin Muhammad CHI 7.01 4 WR Justin McCareins NYJ 13.01 8 TE Tony Gonzalez KCC 2.12 5

Except for that flex spot - If it were my draft I'd have a possible flex guy drafted in that Vick spot and be happy with the other QB's plus 1 more later.

CJ over Holt?

Clayton over Ward?

I like your Vick pick, but not then the pick of Hasselbeck even though you got good value.

Chad Johnson is my # 1 rated receiver this season so that was a no-brainer for me.Clayton/Ward cause me fits. I finally went with Clayton due to his upside but I can definitely see Ward finishing higher.

Vick I like to take in round six/seven when he's available and I'm not sure how people can't. The dude finished 12th in a season where not much went right for the Falcons passing attack. 12th! I'll take that upside everytime.

Hasselbeck and Leftwich both were simply value picks. Especially so with Leftwich whom I feel has top-ten potential in 2005. I simply refused to leave Leftwich on the board for somebody else to grab in order to take a project RB or an average receiver. He solidifies my QB spot and also provides my squad with some trade bait when injuries begin to occur.

Many of the owners put together a pretty strong squad. Only a couple of them made decisions that made me go

All in all, it was a pretty solid draft.

Nice comments

As always, I believe drafting from the first or last draft position can be golden for a fantasy owner. I believe you can draft a winning team from any position but there are spots that are more advantageous than others.Drafting from # 1 overall will always give you a start something like this…Tomlinson, Chad Johnson, Torry HoltTomlinson, Chad Johnson, WestbrookEtc. etc. Great way to start the draft and getting five of the first 49 picks is exceptional.Drafting from # 12 overall gives an owner a lot of options… Depending on league rules, he can…Take the best two running backs availableJamal Lewis / Corey DillonA quarterback/ running back duoCulpepper / LewisTwo receiversMoss / HarrisonOr any combination of the above players. And with four of the first 37 picks, you will stay ahead of the others as well.If you can pick your position, I would look at either of those spots first.

If you truly are the experts you claim you are cause you run your dime store sites then all of you would admit that the draft doesn't mean that much in the overall goal of winning at fantasy football. moreover I think this draft was crap and the league sucks from the begining. I had two days to prepare ofr a draft, when I normally draft in August. I went fishing that weekend so really I had one day. I was totally unfamiliar with the system. I pre picked for the first round and before Mcnabb I had several RB's and Manning. However I did not get those backs and got Mcnabb. Secondly when I got to work at 7:30 AM in Las Vegas I noticed it was my turn and I'm like "####!" WHat's the time limit so I rushed to draft, noticing the aweful organzation of the players that I wasn't going to find one quickly, so I scanned over the first name I recognized that was awesome and that was gonzo. Normally he is thrid round material in my leagues, but then again we do give more points for receptions. TO let you "Experts" know I don't take a free league seriously especially one that I had 2 days notice for and no say on the rules. I've been cool about the whole thing, but now you guys just sound like a bunch of star wars geeks, pushing up your glasses saying " There is no way Han Solo is better that Luke Skywalker. I wouldn't take two storm troopes and a Jabba the Hut for a Han Solo." #### guys get a grip. As experts you should know its a long season, and we all know that on average 1 in 3 starting RB's will miss 6 or more games, and that 3-5 will go down for the season. One thing I've learned as a "Fantasy Football Expert" is to not lose my #1 or #2 to a torn ACL. Yea #####es. In 2003, I had a rock solid running core of Faulk, Duece, and Bennett, with Dunn as a backup in a 10 team league. Yea Boners, running backs. Well, Duece missed 1/3 of the season, Faulk missed like 7-8 games, and Bennett was out nearly the whole season. EVEN DUnn missed time. I had nothing cause my QB sucked. I still managed to finish 3rd, but that doesn't matter you guys are experts right?

I cant argue the value you got for Vick, HB, and and Lefty. However, I would argue you dont want all 3. Two at most. During the season you would find yourself trying to decide which one to start, out thinking yourself most of the time.

Hi this is Chris from rotoworld.com. Wanted to comment on this thread and the draft really quickly. 1. Small correction. receiving bonuses are at 85 yds not 100. 2. As far as FantasyFootballSearch's questionable draft. Yah it was. Especially with the RBs we can start, but playing devil's advocate, sometimes when you've done a TON of drafts you try something a little different. Granted, this was way out of the ballpark, but one questionable draft doesn't always represent everything and all of a fantasy mind etc. That said... WHAT?!?!? were you doing?3. I liked my draft a lot. I myself tried a different philosphy at the turn between the 5th/6th. I grabbed Witten and Shockey. Mainly because I feel that they're the #1 receiving threat for their teams. The other thought was that since I went with 2 WRs at the 3rd/4th turn, someone might get a little itchy and trade me a RB3 for a TE and lesser WR. With the 85 yrds bonus, I think that Witten and Shockey could have more value than most think this year. I have them ranked as the #3 and #4 TEs this year. (Obviously)4. I liked the value of Plummer and I think Griese will do nice things this year, but neither QB is in my top 8 a could and that could cost me, but I feel that the upside of Plummer and Griese is equal to that of Chris' QBs (Vick, Hasselbeck and Leftwich) for example. I'm empty behind Jamal and Julius at RB but those 2 I feel are the best duo in the league, closely challenged by the Priest/LJ and KJ duo for Smitty above. 5. I think I grabbed a lot of guys that will have great years. Obviously none of us have a crystal ball but S.Smith(4.1), T.J(10.1). Curry(16.1) are all WRs that I think could really outplay their average draft position this year. Smith I took higher than most would, but I think he's got top 5-10 written all over him. He wouldn't have been there at 5.12...I drafted a D/ST and K because I felt that it helps the lesser experienced player checking in on this draft see some of those positions coming off the baord. My team:QB: Plummer(7.12), Griese(9.12)RB: Lewis(1.12), J.Jones(2.1), Clarrett(13.12)WR: Horn(3.12), S.Smith(4.1), Mason(8.1), Houshmandzadeh(10.1), Randle EL (11.12), Boston (12.1), Curry(16.1)TE: Witten(5.12), Shockey (6.1)K:Longwell(15.12)D/ST:Chicago(14.1)I can't say I'm the hands down best team. There's still a season to play, but I think there are 3 tiers of teams. I feel I'm one of 3 maybe 4 teams that have the best shot at the league title. So I'll check in tonight, but thanks again for everyone that's interested in our league and Chris for starting this thread.Chris

I like the fact that other site owners still check in on footballguys forums. FFSearch, if you claim to run a FF site, then how can it be possible that you didn't recognize any of the names available to you except Gonzo? Also, why did you even agree to the draft when you knew that you didn't have time to prepare, and that your results might reflect on the overall quality of your site. What's more, how dare you come to a Fantasy Football message board and insult its members for being "starwars geeks" when you yourself own a FF website and participated in a FF draft? That sort of condescending attitude will take your site nowhere.

Pretty nice draft. I do like that K. Jones pick alot, and still getting Holt. One question - what's your plan for week 10 with both your qbs on bye? I figured you'd make a trade by then, but...

Hi this is Chris from rotoworld.com. Wanted to comment on this thread and the draft really quickly.

1. Small correction. receiving bonuses are at 85 yds not 100.

2. As far as FantasyFootballSearch's questionable draft. Yah it was. I drafted a D/ST and K because I felt that it helps the lesser experienced player checking in on this draft see some of those positions coming off the baord.

My team:

QB: Plummer(7.12), Griese(9.12)

RB: Lewis(1.12), J.Jones(2.1), Clarrett(13.12)

WR: Horn(3.12), S.Smith(4.1), Mason(8.1), Houshmandzadeh(10.1), Randle EL (11.12), Boston (12.1), Curry(16.1)

TE: Witten(5.12), Shockey (6.1)

K:Longwell(15.12)

D/ST:Chicago(14.1)

I can't say I'm the hands down best team. There's still a season to play, but I think there are 3 tiers of teams. I feel I'm one of 3 maybe 4 teams that have the best shot at the league title.

Chris
One pick I would question is Shockey. At that point in the draft you were thin at RB, and Staley was still on the board. At QB, I think Plummer and Griese are a great duo if you don't want to spend an early pick. Both produced good numbers last year and are a good value this year.

I think TJ in the 10th was a good pick as well.
