3 Jeff Garcia14 Michael Vick
Any particular reason behind these rankings? (I appreciate that they aren't just cut-and-pasted from ADP).
Regarding Garcia: Couch/Holcombe managed to post 2800+ yards and 17 TDs in 2003. Garcia is a career 60+% passer so I see no reason why he can't improve on those numbers. Further, I have him scrambling 70 times for 300+ yards a few TDs. All told, I think highly of him.Regarding Vick: I recognize that its not popular to 'project injury'. However, I do it. I have Vick actually improving his accuracy (57%) but only passing it 420 times. Further, I 'only' have him scrambling 75 times for 525 yards. Don't get me wrong, if I thought he was going to play 16 games I'd have him right below Culpepper & Manning.

McNair's in almost everyone's top 7, I see, despite coming off a career year, questions about Eddie, the loss of McCareins, the (official) loss of Wycheck, and the improvement of his divisional rivals on defense. Also note that their pass defense was terrible last year, causing them to have to be more aggressive on pass offense. This year, the Titans should be much better on pass D, if only because they'll be healthier. I see the co-MVP falling off sharply this season.

Hasn't McNair been a top 10 QB for several years straight? I'm not extremely high on him (7th), but I don't think the McCareins loss will be that huge, and the addition of Troupe will more than offset the loss of an old but effective Wycheck.Add the question marks surrounding the running game, and McNair's ability to score with his legs, and I think anyone ranking McNair outside the top 10 is taking a stab in the dark. As you point out, the guy was MVP of the league last year. Predicting him to finish in the top 10 at his position isn't a reach at all. That's my justification, anyway.

My quick thoughts, which are also reflected in my rankings:

Vick is generally too low. Unless you're predicting injury, he's got to be top 2, at worst.

Maddox too low. He was awful last year, and still threw for 3400 and 18. A healthy OL and any improvement from Maddox himself should result in a top 15-20 season statistically.
Pennington too low. This guy is the next great NFL QB, according to many NFL insiders. This is the last year he's ranked outside the top 5.

Vick - top 2? Who would you put him ahead of? Peyton Manning, the most consistent QB in the game  Dante Culpepper, top 1 in every year he stays healthy has a top running game and better WRs  I can see him making top 3 if he stays healthy, but I'd take McNabb ahead of him.The problem with Maddox is once Pittsburgh is out of the playoffs, Ben starts or at least plays more.

Pennington could be top 5, but I'm not ready to put him there just yet. McCareins needs to learn the system, I'm not sold on Santana Moss as an elite WR, Chrebet is over the hill, and Cotchery is under it.

Good thoughts. I respectfully disagree.1 - see my rankings. I have Vick at #1.

2 - no way Ben gets run this year. If injured, Batch gets the call. Ben is the least ready of the big 3 rookie QBs. And the Steelers should be much improved this year, and contending for a playoff spot. I don't see them falling so far back that games in Dec. don't matter.

3 - I think Pennington is underrated, and shouldn't be discounted too much because the Jets don't have superstars at WR. Other than the big 3 (Vick, Manning, and C-Pepp), I think he's right there with McNabb and Hass at the top of tier 2.

If everyone had the same rankings FF would be pretty dang boring and drafting wouldn't be very fun. Some people will get a kick out of me picking Green and Garcia so high, but I get a kick out of people picking McNair and Bulger as high as they do. To those who think Tommy Maddox will be benched at the end of the year for Ben Reothlisberger if the Steelers are out of the playoffs....It ain't gonna happen. This is Tommy's team in 2004, and Ben will not see any meaningful action until 2005 at the earliest.

Why?We're assuming the Steelers are out of the playoffs, if they are in it, of course Tommy stays in. Awhile back, I read that if Cowher felt his job was secure, he'd strongly consider starting Ben early in the season, but would likely go with Maddox because he has to win.Once that is no longer an issue, doesn't it make sense to see Ben in games?Or do you think Cowher would be so concerned about his mental state and has such low confidence in his young QB that he wants to protect Ben for the entire year?

CA is right on this one.Tommy signed a contract to be the starter for this year and maybe even into next if Ben can't beat him out yet. He won't be benched at any point in 2004 other than because of injury, and the Steelers will look at him all year as their best chance to win games.Gloves are off in 2005, but Tommy will start all 16 games in 2004. If you think that his numbers will decline from last year with an improved offensive line, fine. I think he's going to be exceptional value this year, and he's going to play at least as good as he did 2 years ago, maybe even a little better.

I am picking Byron Leftwich to crack the Top 10 this year

I am thinking he will finish between 8-10 and here is why:

* Good offensive line and pretty deep too. They only allowed 28 sacks (9th in NFL) last year, not bad in front of a rookie QB.

* Strong running game to keep defenses honest.

* Byron threw (7) 4th quarter TDs last year (tied for 1st in AFC) he is good under pressure late in the game when you need him to perform. Team was peaking late in the year.

* Much better receivers this year. They will have a rededicated Jimmy Smith from day 1 and added a solid rookie in Reggie Williams who should prove to be a great red zone target. Troy Edwards will be a good posession receiver.

* Defense is improved which will get the offense better field position and more chances thru takeaways.

* He is a solid leader who has the respect from his teammates so the team chemistry should be huge and an important factor in his success this year.

I think most people just see him as a second year player with decent upside that might take another year to develop and discount the fact that he might be taking the leap sooner than expected. There is always a guy who jumps up the ranking and surprises peopl and I say Leftwich is the guy this year.

We can watch Leftwich on the NFL network's "Hard Knocks" this training camp too.

An ex-Steeler homer here (moved to SD after 28 years of Steeler love) - and CA and S4Life are 100% correct. While Maddox didn't perform as well as expected last year, most Steeler insiders will tell you that his struggles were the result of a banged up and underachieving OL.At the very least, a healthy OL will enable Maddox to slightly improve on his 2003 #"s, even if he has another bad season. 3500 and 20 at the minimum, with 4000 and 30 upside.Staley should he considerably out of the backfield, and a return for form from Burress means Maddox's weapons are as good as any QB in the game.B/c of Maddox's ADP and preseason rankings, he'll be an almost every team I own this year as my QB2.
