Extreme Big Play Heavy IDP draft strategy (1 Viewer)

I have played in an IDP league for a number of years and it is extremely big play heavy (10:1 sack / interception to tackle ratio). The need for good defensive players is at such a premium that last year IDPs like J. Allen, D. Ware, J. Harrison, C. Mathews started going in the 2nd round. Is this craziness to consider taking a Jared Allen this year at 2.02 to start a trend and push offensive players back to me at 3.09 and 4.02 (a ten team league)?

We start 2 DL, 2 LB, and 2 DBs.

Depends on what that 10/1 ratio is exactly is it 10 pts per sack and 1 per tackle ?

In my league we use a 12/1 ratio 6 pts/sack or INT and 1/2 for a tackle

The DF players starting going in round 8 but I think that is still too high I was able to land players like Hali in round 32 in a 12 team league last year (dynasty)

My DF is

Freeney (15)

R-Edwards (17)

Campbell (FA)

Dumbervil (24)

Woodley (13)

Hali (32)

Wake (FA)

Polamalu (17)

Ed Reed (31)

Round 2 seems crazy to me!

My 1st DF player in a 12 team league I took in round 13.

10 pts per sack and 10 pts per Int and 1 point per tackle .5 per assist.

I guess the question is since they starting getting drafted in round 2 last year, am I better starting the run at the beginning of the round or hope that nobody takes IDPs until it comes back to me in the third. I draft at #9 in a 10 team league, thus my concern if last year is any indicator, that there will be a rush of IDPs in the second if I don't grab one at 2.02 and then I missed the elites when I pick again at 3.09.

Your better of taking the studs at RB and WR and getting your DL and LB's later...I don't know that it needs to be said but I will say it anyway DB's are a complete crapshoot in this system wait and then wait some more for them.

Every year you can find players off the waiver wire that put up huge sack totals (last year I got Wake and picked Hali super late) that was just me.

Charles Johnson is another name to come to mind.

Why take a DF player in round when you get get stud RB or WR ?

Is your league PPR ?

You should draft DB's one pick before your kicker. There are hunderds of serviceable defensive backs...

... actually, if it's BIG play, it would really knock down the tacklers, I guess, and focus more on the picks.

It's hard to get a feel for your draft. Just know a DL#1 is gold (allen, suggs, tuck, cole). Make sure you get one of them.

thanks for the input guys! The league is a PPR and there is 4 pts per passing TD, but standard everywhere else for offensive players. I agree that DL are gold and that is why I am not willing to take the risk of not getting one if a run starts after my pick in the second and I have to wait almost 20 picks to get another DL. So I am thinking that my strategy should be to start the run in the 2nd and hope that pushes WR and RB talent to me in the 3rd and 4th if the other owners follow my lead. I just wanted to get your thoughts. thanks.

I can't believe people are taking DF players in the 2nd and 3rd rounds of a PPR league. Give me Roddy White and give him Jared Allen.

I will find a DL later on.

My goodness.

How would have Allen done for you the 1st 8 games last year 1-2 sacks ? Really you are going to consider Allen at pick 2.02 over players like Andre, Calvin, White, Nicks and Fitzgerald ?

Really ?

It is a pure points league with no head to head, so although J. Allen started slow he still ended with double digit sacks which put him in the top 2 DL for the year. In my opinion is has everything to do with value based on point differential compared to the next DL you would get if you don't draft him. So would you be better of with taking R. White in Round 2 and then getting E. Dumervil, M. Shaunnesy or C. Clemons as your #1 DL later or would you rather have J. Allen in round 2 and have the option to take R. Wayne, G. Jennings, M. Austin, etc. as your #1 WR in round 3?
