**Fake Scarcity Mixtape Draft #1: Tuesday picks 12 & 4PM EDT (1 Viewer)

2.21 Beautiful Day - U2 (Category - International Country - Ireland)

One of my all time favorites - uplifting and rockin. Don't get the U2 hate - love these guys. Yeah, Bono is pretentious.
I don't get the hate either. I don't care if he is pretentious or not. He puts his money and help where his mouth is, and does a lot of good for people in need.
I really dislike them, but Bono isn't that pretentious. Sting is pretentious. I just don't care for the flat singing and The Edge's over-produced guitar.

Having said that, one of my favorite songs is "Desire". (And they were great at the post-9/11 Superbowl.)

I'm not sure I'm okay with having an entire horn section as a solo artist. The Stone Coyotes only have three in the band, and so does one of my picks. Does that mean I can pick an entire band as a feature instrument/solo artist?

I love the song, but with Paul Simon, it is easy to come up with actual solo instruments that aren't guitar or piano that one shouldn't have to game the system.
Dibs on this guy for when I get around to making my solo selection.

I'm up?

Edit: Also, Number category only applicable in the title, not band name?

Thats why I asked first. But the guy who chose the category said it's what he had in mind. If people object to it I'll pick again.

3.10 Red Red Wine - The Replacements.

Drug/Alcohol (Red Wine?)

Needed to get this one accomplished before the drug of choice options dried up. Also - suck it Neil Diamond/UB40.
Don't you be throwing darts at Neil Diamond.
I appreciate Neil, but his/UB40's song is to The Replacements's song as tapioca pudding is to napalm.
I agree with ya, and I think Mrs. R secretly likes U2.
Nope. They have thirteen albums, and I only like two songs. The rest make me change to another song toot sweet.

U2 is fine. They're just kind of dull. I never really understood the attraction. They're just kind of there.

"Beautiful Day" is typical of their work. It's a fine song I suppose; there's nothing wrong with it. But it doesn't move mountains. It's filler.

3.12 Take Five Dave Brubeck Quartet

Almost took this for Morello's odd time signature drum solo, but I'll go the more obvious route and use it for my number.

Question on the drug category. Not that I really care that much, but as per the description, the drug is supposed to be in the lyrics as opposed to just a song that is about drugs (without mentioning it), no?

I think so. Otherwise, I might have been tempted to take U2's "Desire".

OK, Here is this morning's update to this list. I will try to keep an updated one on every page, since I can't get to a decent spot on Page 1.

Thanks!

It's no big deal, I'll try to keep it up.

If El Floppo's autoskip, I guess I'll go - could probably get a reference to just about any drug/alcohol from this album, this song is one of my favourites for combining the party/drug/alcohol references with all the religious imagery, and of course who doesn't love Holly/Hallelujah?

I saw him at the riverbank.
He was breaking bread and giving thanks.
With crosses made of pipes and planks.
Leaned up against the nitrous tanks.
He said take a hit. hold your breath and I'll dunk your head.
Then when you wake up again.
You'll be high as hell and born again.
3.17 - The Hold Steady - Banging Camp - Drug reference (Nitrous)

Kind of a makeshift pick after my beloved Broadway Blueshirts moved on in the Stanley Cup Playoffs last night in dramatic fashion.

I actually don't like the artist at all, but love the song.

3.19 "Jungleland" - Bruce Springsteen (sports nickname)

"The Rangers had a homecoming in Harlem late last night."

It's actually the U.S. Army Rangers, but I'm going with it. Very close to using this in the solo category for Clarence Clemons' monster sax.

3.20 Dr. John - Right Place, Wrong Time (US state-Louisiana)

It features a wonderful growling vocal performance from the inimitable Mack Rebennack, funky backing from The Meters, first rate production by Allen Toussaint and a stinging guitar solo by David Spinoza. It reached the Top 10 in 1973 which says a lot about how much the music industry has changed in 40 years.

Hov34 on autoskip.

Here's a song for NV to sing in a comically broad Essex accent

4.02 Sexuality - Billy Bragg - sports team reference (Red Star Belgrade)

I had an uncle who once played

For Red Star Belgrade
He said some things are really best left unspoken
But I prefer it all to be out in the open

All other songs that mention Red Star Belgrade are now officially off the board.

We're going to keep the draft going through tomorrow and then switch to one pick per day (plus makeups) starting on Saturday.

Did we ever do the degrees of separation draft?
What was that one again?
I thought we discussed doing one where you linked the picks to each other, either from bands/artists playing together, collaborating, touring etc...

i.e. I could take Nirvana with my first song, then Foo Fighters with my next (Dave Grohl link), then Queens of the Stone Age (Grohl) then Them Crooked Vultures (Homme link) then Led Zeppelin (JPJ link), etc... A scarcity twist would be we all start with the same artist and have to branch out from there.

It's very possible I was the only one who wanted to do it.

Certainly challenging, but I like it.

Ditto.
