Walk on QB Ben Johnson (Lions OC) was college teammates with G Arthur Smith (Falcons HC.)
Falcons are flying high. Effective run game, Ridder has been efficient though the Packers got to him a few times. S Jessie Bates ($64M FA) has been as advertised. London and Pitts have been underwhelming (esp. the latter) but Detroit is down both it's starting S.
Lions are missing RB David Montgomery, LT Taylor Decker, RG Hal Vaitai, pass rush specialist James Houston IV, defensive leader CJ Gardner-Johnson, S Kerby Joseph....nobody cares. It's the NFL, injuries are the norm, challenge accepted.
Gibbs role seems to be the one thing everyone most interested in, but in my mind the key is Goff making big time throws to his receivers. Josh Reynolds (groin) leads the team in first downs, Amon-Ra St Brown (toe) seems to have avoided anything serious, rookie TE Sam LaPorta already has the full trust of his QB. Even sans two starters Detroit's OL remains a strength - with Sewell flipping sides, the weak link is RT Matt Nelson. RG Graham Glasgow gave up 3 pressures in 19 snaps (15 pass pro) which is not good enough.
On defense they are generating pressure but only have one sack. Decent front 7 but of the three S expected to earn most of the snaps, two are suspect. Tracy Walker III (achilles early last year) will see his first start, former captain and leader of the DB room. Will Harris (#25) and Ifeatu Melifonwu (#6) are exploitable. Slot CB Brian Branch (#32) and LCB Cam Sutton (#1) are solid, but RCB Jerry Jacobs (#23) is coming off a rough outing.
Goff is playing at a very high level. His 26 TDs at home since the beginning of 2022 leads the NFL. His Big Time Throw (official PFF stat) is up and his TWP (turnover worthy play) rate is among the best in the league. Not especially good at being mobile but most of their plays are designed to get the ball out in 2.5 seconds or less.
Another SRO sellout crowd at Ford Field but I wonder if they'll be a bit muted at the start after a devastating defeat in the home opener.
