Falcons GM Dimitroff on Marvin Harrison (1 Viewer)

Defending Champs

One of the sports talk stations here in Atlanta just had Dimitroff on an interview and amongst several questions was asked about Marvin Harrison.

With all other questions, he gave a lengthy explanation and answered the questions very thoroughly as expected.

When asked if Marvin Harrison was ever in consideration when they signed Marty Booker and Robert Furguson which he explained both signings in full detail...he simply replied to Harrison...

No

The crickets began to chirp after several seconds of dead air time. I believe that tells you where Harrison is in today's NFL.

Thats too bad, I always liked Marvin. I figured he would at least get a offer from some team though.

While Harrison was a great WR when in his prime, I don't really think he has the determination or motivation any more to be a consistent starter in the NFL today. Don't know for sure as I don't know Marvin, just my thoughts.

Does anyone know if he is even actively looking for a job? He could be content with his car washes (insert shooting joke here).

I really don't know, maybe it's been reported somewhere one way or the other.

I think there are a number of things we can speculate with a reasonable level of accuracy:

1. Harrison was one of the best receivers to play in the past 15 years if he isn't getting contacted by other teams for opportunities, he's too far past his prime.

2. If the Colts let Harrison move on after he was their dominant receiver for the past decade and couldn't produce well enough with a QB like Manning and runningmate Reggie Wayne, Harrison's injuries have robbed him.

3. If Harrison can't beat out Anthony Gonzalez, Pierre Garcon, or a couple of rookies for even the No. 3 spot, he's too far gone. In his prime not even Wayne could be considered as good as Harrison.

He looked like a shell of the player he was prior to his injury and I don't think that's going to change. As we discussed on the Audible last night, Matt Jones seemed like a better candidate (skill-wise) for Atlanta and who they added....

Shouldn't the "No" also tell you that he's not ALLOWED to talk about Harrison? Isn't he still in deep because of the shooting? Did this already go away and I just don't know it?

In fairness, it could be that Harrison won't settle for a #3 role. Or perhaps even a #2 role.

Why are you insinuating that Harrison couldn't beat out Gonzalez or those other players?Harrison was cut because he was due to make a crap load of money and Harrison was unwilling to restructure. No where has it been stated or known that Harrison couldn't beat out Gonzalez, Garcon or some other rookies.

This guys was suppose to have the longevity to challenge some of Rice's records. Those records might never be broken.

or perhaps every GM in the league knows he is cooked. Dude couldnt even get it done last year with Peyton Manning tossing him layups.

After Jerry Rice I feel Marvin is the next best WR in the history of the league.

After watching him play last season it was clear to me he is done as a #1 or even #2 WR.

I have been a huge Harrison fan since he came out of college but IMO the guy is done. What set him apart was his speed and quickness--he could get in and out of his breaks seemingly without slowing down. He could also run right by you. He was never a physical WR; many times he'd simply go down or out of bounds to avoid a big hit, which is understandable considering his size. The last 2 years it has looked like that explosiveness is gone, so you're left with a WR who is not physical and can't run. I hate to say it but I thought the Colts were better off when he was out of the lineup. I don't think he'd be an asset in any capacity now, and that's not even factoring in the legal stuff....

That's exactly my point.

Marvin's career basically was all but over when Addai ran into the back of his knee in 2007. He hasn't been the same since. Last year, it was painful to watch and I think it hurt the team to have Manning force the ball to Marvin via 8-yard curls to keep him happy. It definitely hurt the Colts when he came back for the 2007 division playoff game when he lost a key fumble - and he didn't finish that game, either.

Keep in mind, hardly any teams showed much interest in Tory Holt either. That tells me something as well. Both of these guys can't get separation anymore which is too bad as they were 2 of the best WR to ever play the game.
