"Fall Experimental Football League" (1 Viewer)

Could the "Fall Experimental Football League" eventually become a NFL Developmental league? I think it makes perfect sense.

Really the NFL could use a Development league that playes during the fall. That way if the team gets an injury you can pluck a player of the developmental league that is already in football shape and ready to go.

I'd like this better if they were signing 18-20 year olds. If college age players don't want want to study or play for scholarships and no money then this is the solution.

The NFL is hedging its bets here. It doesn't want to undermine the NCAA right now, but the various lawsuits and pressures on the NCAA could make it less feasible as a development league for the NFL in the future. It could come down that the NCAA athletes win, schools have to start paying a reasonable portion of their revenue-sport profits to the athletes, and a lot of schools start pulling the plug on revenue sports. (It would be hard to make paying athletes fly at Cal). If that happens, the NFL needs a place to develop talent.

As I've said elsewhere, as a college fan first, I'd rather see football and basketball work more like baseball, where kids who aren't really interested in college go straight to the pros. The college programs could then be for actual student-athletes.

Why is a new league necessary when those players can go to the CFL?
I'm sure the NFL would love to find a way to tap into the money streams of big-time college football. If they (or anyone for that matter) could establish a semi-pro league for college age kids based in the South, there could be a lot of cash in it. 5 or 10 years down the road this could be important.

Every time a league got rolling, they tried to get too big and didn't accept their place in the world. Minor league is minor league with no illusions, I like the idea here.

Also, often times once a league rose in popularity, some rich guy came along and invested his $ and his non-football opinion that changed things in a negative manner.

I'm skeptical about any minor league system pulling much from the college game. There's just too much history established and allegiance to college programs for any pull even over a decade. In a generation or two, perhaps.

But, if small schools shut down their programs due to finances, there would be an opening for a system to start. I just don't think it would pull more fans than your Class A / Coastal Plain leagues. At best it would be akin to the Southern Professional Hockey league or others of that level. Fun games for sure, we prefer watching minor league ball due to the prices and smaller crowds, but your average fan doesn't pay much attention to these teams.

I don't think it's possible to introduce a fall football alternative successfully in OK, TX, and prob Arkansas too. In the fall, their Friday-Sunday routine involves hs football, college football, and then the Dallas Cowboys.

In the spring, maybe, but it would have to be teams with rosters of former local players.

To root for a local team is almost religious. You don't root for anyone else or else you'll offend. The former local players would probably be a way they'd consider it

According to the interview on Mike and Mike, CFL requires a 2 year contract which makes it hard to leave, whereas the FXFL lets you leave anytime you get an offer from the NFL.
