We are discussing tropical vacation options...

- live on the west coast

- 8 yr old daughter

- we all enjoy the ocean (want to be walking distance to good snorkeling)

- want a fun/interactive pool

- enjoy a balance of activity and downtime

- so far thinking about maui, (been many times), kauai, big island, mayan riviera, cabo, possibly ixtapa/zihuatanejo

- open to other locations

- open to a la carte or all-inclusive

- want to keep the trip under 6k out the door

- i am a pretty decent researcher (and enjoy it), but thought i would pick the FFA braintrust

- looking for recommendations for locations and specific resorts

danke

air/hotel/car at hyatt kaanapali/westin/sheraton/marriott = $3600. I know that in some locations I will not need a car for the full time there and can do daily rentals for day trips.

If you been to Maui many times, why not Oahu and the Big Island? Offer much different experience than Maui.

i don't love oahu (though had a nice time in 10 for my brother's wedding), but also looking at kauai and big island.

If you aren't opposed to flying a decent distance there are tons of places n the Caribbean that meet your needs
shoot
Hyatt in Aruba... Meets all of your requirements, amazing spot for a family vacation.
looks good.... air/hotel for 3 of us $1400 pp. car needed?edit: might be a little far. don't want to loose too much time due to travel.
No car needed, great food and weather.

Check Atlantis in Bahamas, never been there, but never heard a bad review... Prob 3 hours closer by air, but might be more expensive.

Prob gonna exceed your $6k number, but the reviews are always very positive... You could stay at the lower tier resort there and prob stay within range.

looked at turks and caicos beaches...

all inclusive for the 3 of us around $5500 w/out air. might bump the budget up a little

starting to hone in on big island. it's been 20+ years since i have been. any recs for:

- good snorkeling spot for our an 8 yr old's first time (plenty to see, calm water, easy entry)

- good restaurants around the island

- would like to do some diving. good excursions that also offer snorkeling (mrs and i to each do 1 tank while the other snorkels with the kiddo)

i am looking at 2 places, but recs for accommodations under or around $200/night.

danke

I'll give a negative review of Atlantis. We hated it. The restaurants and service are awful. I mean Terrible Service is the worst of any place we've ever been.

Hyatt Aruba is excellent

We enjoyed club med Punta Cana, but stay in an Oceanside suite. The old rooms are worn down. But there is a 5 star area that is awesome.

Beaches Turk and Caicos was great but probably higher price.

Costa Rica has some options. Putagayo if you want resorts. The Four seasons is nice.

Eight year-old girl would love Walt Disney World. Tie it with a cruise, and you'd be able to do some of the beach-type activities too.

thank you guys. The hyatt aruba looks good. i am going to look into that next year. we are going to keep things a little closer this year and hit the big island of hawaii. it has been 20+ years since i have been. and recs?

I'm headed here in May (not a family trip, a work thing) any bars/restaurants/excursions you could recommend. Any tips about the rooms and property?Eta: Pretend you are a single fantasycurse who is looking for a week of booze/blow/hoors staying at the Hyatt Aruba. Sorry to sully up this family thread, just looking for some FFA tips on this particular location.

Ive been to a lot of snorkeling destinations in the carrib, but Yal Ku lagoon (google image it) in Akumal (Riviera Maya) has the coolest / most beginner friendly snorkling Ive ever seen. Perfect for kids/beginners. Its in a protected cove, so its never rough. Very easy to get in/out.
