Fanball Aggravating Product Pitch Popups (1 Viewer)

Brace yourselves, kids - this is going to be a long one!

Have carried our league on Fanball for several years now (4 years or so) after having been on Sportsline for many years.

Last year, I noticed Fanball had a lot of ads that I feel were designed/coded purely to trick you into clicking on them. They would be full page-width banner ads, but where almost a majority of the ad itself was whitespace. I may be crazy, but I clicked on those things over and over by accident because I was just trying to click on some whitespace to get my cursor/screen focus onto the page so that I could scroll the page using my mouse wheel.

But, I got over that ... pain in the butt, but not a huge deal. Maybe a 3 out of 10 on the "shady web practices meter".

Now this year, I come across their "new and improved site design". :lmao:

Part of this design is these layered "popups". It's not really a popup. It's more like you go to a page (for example, your league's homepage), and the whole page fades into the background while a separate window fades up into the foreground. And this new window that you're presented is offering to sell you one of Fanball's products/services/games/whatever. Which is fine - they have to make money somehow. Initially, I kind of took the same approach as with their banner ad trickery from last year. It's a little bit shady, and a little bit annoying, but it is what it is.

My big problem is that there is a "click here to not show this again" box on the little popup window. Which is a fairly standard web practice - similar to when you get on a company's email list, it is good practice for their emails to have on an "unsubscribe" link at the bottom of every email, so you can opt out if you want. Similar case here...I'm not interested in whatever upgrade/add-on they're pitching, so I check the box that says it won't show me the window again.

But it does.

Almost every time.

In their defense, it's not every time that the thing pops up...but I've clicked the "don't show me this again" box at least half a dozen times.

And I still get it.

And I not only get that full-page popup on my league's homepage, but I get another little intrusive overlay pitch - another "ad layer" that lives over the little "latest player news" widget on my league's homepage. This one is pitching Fanball's premium "Owner's Edge" product. Pain in the butt, of course, because you have to either click to order or click to make it go away before you get to see your player news. Again here, there's a "don't show me this anymore" box. So I check it, and it goes away. Until the next time I load the page. Then I have to click "don't show this again" so that I can see my player news.

This is a solid 7.5 out of 10 on the 'shady web practices meter'. It feels like they are trying to trick me/annoy me into signing up for one of their premium services.

I sent an email to Fanball customer support to ask why their webforms weren't acknowledging that I clicked on the "don't show me this again" boxes, and I got a canned response about how they need to have banner ads on the site because "The reality is that the cost of bringing you the best Commissioner product on the market at a price that offers great value is more than league fees alone can cover.".

Well...that's just great. Now, not only are their stupid overlay web forms not working and annoying me, but their customer support team is completely missing the point (that their opt outs don't work), and THAT is annoying me as well...

I don't think this is a browser issue or anything - I have my cookies turned on (I would imagine the popup writes a cookie to indicate that you've opted out...)

Bottom line: last year, Fanball was kinda bad. This year, Fanball is very bad. And we haven't even hit the season yet. Fanball's headed down the wrong path: it's clear that customer satisfaction/user experience is not a priority for them. Bad news when there are dozens of competitors out there offering similar products at similar pricing levels...without the affront of this annoying product placement.

Rant.

Over.

[sorry it went so long...hope you enjoyed your popcorn.]

Has anyone else had similar issues with Fanball this year, or am I just crazy? (this is a distinct possibility  )

Yep, its really starting to piss me off. How many times do I have to click the "don't show me this anymore" box?

A buddy and I completely quit a league we won for the simple fact that they refused to not use Fanball. Hate their site with a passion.

I commish two leagues on fanball but use all kinds of neat extensions with my firefox browser that I see NO ads on ANY sites lol. I also have greasemonkey extension which allows you to alter the look of many sites, including fanball.

I got the one full-screen deal the first time and have never had it since I opted out of the thing.

I am in Fanball's Real Leagues and have not come accross this. It does tick me off to pay for a service and still have to be exposed to ads. When the league were free I didn't mind the ads but when I pay I look at it as double dipping.

After being with them for years, this will be my main league's last year with them. The main reason we've stayed at Fanball this long is that it's a free league and each team can pay for their membership through the site, so no making sure people pay on time. It's also easier to find new owners when one drops out - we have 10 owners we know and I think 10 team leagues are too small to be interesting. Almost everything Fanball has done the last 3-4 years has irritated me.

I'm not interested in whatever upgrade/add-on they're pitching, so I check the box that says it won't show me the window again. But it does.Almost every time.
Same here. Absolutely, completely inexcusable.
Good to hear that I'm not the only one.Bad for Fanball that I'm hearing that, because it only cements the fact that they clearly place a higher premium on pushing their product than they do on their customer's satisfaction with their product. Congratulations, Fanball - you are succeeding in repelling your users away from your service...

I'd be willing to be that we're seeing a technical error, as opposed to an intentional attempt to serve up more advertising. Even the greediest marketing droid would see that this is a terrible idea.Still inexcusable to see it happening, though.

I am the commish of our league which was at Fanball for the past 2-3 years and when I saw the newly updated site this year, I got the hell out of there.

Basically a third of the homepage is designate to ads. Sorry....I am not paying 70 bucks to have one third of a non-customizable homepage designated to Fanball ads.

You can tell that Fanball is currently more worried about profit, than customer satisfaction, which will bite them in the ### in the long run with many leagues moving from Fanball to different league providers.

Agreed - I also doubt that it's intentional (otherwise, why even bother putting in the opt out checkbox?). But I wrote them about this 2 days ago, and their response didn't even acknowledge that I was pointing out that their opt out didn't work. Their response to me read as if they were responding to Phurfur's post:
It does tick me off to pay for a service and still have to be exposed to ads.
Not that there's anything wrong with Phurfur's complaint - it's a valid one, and based on Fanball's canned response, I'd say it's one they get quite a bit. But it's not what I was complaining about. Based on the responses in this thread of other people having similar experiences, I really really doubt that I'm the first to write to them to complain about the optouts not working...Let me preface by saying I have some experience in the web development process...If it is a technical error (likely), and even if I WAS the first person to call this to their attention (unlikely), I would expect that if they wanted to they could've easily diagnosed and fixed in these 2 days since I reported to them. Which says to me that they don't place a priority on fixing the issue. Which takes us back to valuing their product sales & ad placement more than their customer experience. So they're making their own bed, I guess...[edited for clarity]

 My 17-paragraph rant, boiled down into 3 sentences. Nicely done. :hey:

Yeah, Fanball has definitely ticked me off the last year or so with all of the ads. I know I can use Firefox extensions, but I feel responsible for the 9 other people in my league as well (Im commish). The new layout is terrible. Important content is either "scrunched" or pushed far down the page. Ads get the middle and popups come out of nowhere.

I get it that they need to make money and ads are part of the way of life. But with yet another price increase, their site has lost all competitive ground it had a few years ago.

My 2nd 3-year commitment is over after this year. I am running away from them, not walking.

..I could deal with a popup here and there....but placing ads in the middle of paid content is rediculous.

The fact that they have ads AT ALL tells me they are greedy. This is not a technical or coding error. Its an escalation of last years banner ads. If they start out small and increase ads over the years, less people will flee (in theory, of course). Truth is, which is apparent in this thread, that people are getting PO'd and leaving. MFL has no adds and costs about the same. Fanball.

Fanball is so 1997.
 thye've jumped the shark, and so has the Huddle.comthe huddle has outdate information all over its members area. and they run more ads and commercials than anyone in FF>.they're almost one big infomercial now.they've officially bitten the dust, imo.say to say, too, because they used to be outstanding!

Just moved our keeper to Fanball and am I seem limited by the product. Everything is coming in the next enhancement...this is a year round business and everything is in development. I called Customer Support and about an issue with a league id of one of my owners...I called and a lady answered, as I asked her questions she seemed to be asking people around her for answers. I then heard people telling her to tell me "Send an email through the fanball site". She said sorry and told me to send an email, this was an 3 hours before our draft. Still waiting to hear from them. I drafted for the owner, but was put off by Fanball...this will more than likely be our first and last year on Fanball.

The ads are an annoyance, and the product is lacking...funny how the fanball mags make the presses on time but draft room was barely available in August.

Even the simplest thing like time zones cannot be handled on fanball, or being able to post an apostrophe on the message board.

I'm dreading the new and improved Live Scoring

I ran their live draft "browser test" last night.

In both IE and Firefox, it warned me that I had Flash 9, and asked me to please upgrade to Flash 7. They were nice enough to include a link... to the download for Flash 9.

Nice work, Fanball.

I posted in this thread, and after a year on fanball as commish....I have one HUGE complaint.

The draft room was horrible, I had to draft for three of my owners and stop the draft a number of times.

Connectivity was an issue(all users having high speed connections), and there was quite a bit of lag refreshing the draft room. Sometimes draft picks were appearing 5-10 picks later.

That is my one major complaint, the ads are terrible but every site has ads except your yahoo leagues.

The draft room alone would be the main reason I would leave fanball, otherwise the league management week to week was acceptable.
