Fantasy football’s popularity is spreading to your television. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the cable network FX is adding a new half-hour comedy, "The League."
The program will "explore marriage, male friendship, parenting, suburbia and growing up through the prism of a fantasy-football league." The relatively unknown cast includes, Mark Duplass ("Humpday"), Steve Rannazzisi, Nick Kroll, Paul Scheer, Jon Lajoie and Katie Aselton.
"The League" will join new show "Louie," animated comedy "Archer" and "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" for a comedy block of television. Per the article, FX is expected to have at least 10 original scripted series on the air in the next year. This would surpass all other cable channels in original programming. Current FX shows include "Philadelphia," "Sons of Anarchy," "Rescue Me," "30 Days," "Damages" and the final season of "Nip/Tuck."
For those unaware of what or how fantasy football works follow this link. The short and sweet answer is, you're the manager of a team of NFL (or NCAA) players and you make roster moves in order to score the most points each week to defeat an opponent. All leagues have a scoring system and your overall points or head to head wins and loses determine an outright league winner.
In a 2007 article for PC Magazine, fantasy football is the most popular online game in the world, with an estimated 15-18 million gamers in the United States.
It was inevitable that fantasy football's popularity would be taken advantage of by Hollywood and we'll see how "The League," does when the NFL/NCAA season is on hiatus.
