Fantasy League Systems - Pros and Cons of Each? (1 Viewer)

I'm going to be starting a new dynasty league soon and I wanted to get some feedback from some more experienced people about the pros and cons of some of the variations on the traditional dynasty format.

Some, like IDP vs. Regular league, are well covered. Though not every wrinkle of that is (some leagues I know split DT/DE, CB/SS, etc). But I was wondering if anyone has had any experienced with other variations, like leagues with "practice squads", salary caps, player contracts, and the like. What's the upside to your particular variation on the rules? What's the downside?

I'm most interested in looking into a salary cap/contract league, though, and haven't had much luck on basic info. Does anyone have links to sample rules or systems for salary cap/contract leagues, or links to guides on how to set up those leagues?

Please feel free to discuss any other unique rules or systems your league has in place, so that everyone can benefit from the discussion.

Salary cap / contracts are only going to work if you have very dedicated and serious owners across the board. Also helps if you have a long history of playing in leagues with those guys. If not, and people drop out, you're going to have a hard time getting people to take on struggling orphan teams.

 The commissioner needs to be VERY meticulous because owner will try every trick to get around rules.

I always hated the idea of salary caps / contracts. I felt that the BEST owners got PUNISHED for building a strong team. But I don't know enough about caps/contracts. What are the basic rules?

If forced to turn over your team because there's no way to keep a player past X number of seasons or because salaries increase so quickly that you can't hold a good team, then better owners can get punished. If you setup a system whereby teams can hold as many studs as they can roster with good management and a little luck, the extra strategy involved with cap/contract leagues can be a lot of fun.

The rule sets can get awful long and crazy -- as cartel mentioned -- because there are so many more loopholes to close when you begin discussing tagging players, contracts and potential penalties.

Here's one example of a well run league with a good rule book and rule set. You absolutely must have a knowledge commish to do this kind of league well.
