Due to the influx of fantasy football players over the last few years the number of fantasy football magazines for sale numbers in my local bookstore in the dozens. I know that using online sources like FBG or even yahoo are much more up to date, but I was still wondering if anyone has any opinions about a magazine or two that might be worth buying for their insights into the game? Also, I am not really looking for magazines published buy ESPN if you know what I mean. Thanks for all opinions!

Of the ones I've seen, FF Index and Rotoworld would be the two I liked the best

As a rule, I don't pay attention to fantasy mags as the information tends to be outdated and is no substitute for web info. Having said that, our own FBGs has a great mag that is worth your time reading.

One bit of advice, do not bring your mags to a draft. I see guys in my league who still do and I lick my chops like a hungry lion that needs to feed its young. Umm num num num num!!!!!!

or you bring your mag specifically to make people under estimate you.either way, as far as mags go, it's nice to get different viewpoints on players. but flip through the mag before buying. I always look at the reasons given for a given prediction, and if the reasons seem to make sense based on what you know about the team, then it may be a decent mag to buy.If the reasons given are poorly thought out or dont go into much detail, then dont waste your money.one mag I found, I looked through it, (pre-draft issue) and they did a mock and the mock had Indy getting a WR and the justification for that was to replace Harrison. I dont know if they realized that this was what Gonzalez was drafted for, but I decided this was not a mag to buy, and I wont buy any of their other mags either. That kind of logic and reason will not help you win championships.either way, find a couple mags you like. Make sure the writers for each mag are different (sometimes the same writer may be involved with more than one publication) This way you get different viewpoints. Each writer probably knows some scouts, etc so they will have a different angle on certain players and this info can be useful.ie. a writer on the west coast is likely to have more dirt on players in San Fran or San Diego as compared to New York or Miami.

Isn't rotoworld and fanball ( mag ) the same thing?

Coulda sworn browsing through them they had the exact same ''meet the staff''

I love mags. The paper kind *cough cough* not the download this...take this CD....ect ect

I bought the Guru and SI one. Kinda favoring the SI

Fantasy football Index

Sure, like all magazines the info is out of date; but, if you're new enough to FF to ask this question, then you will benefit from reading the content.

Magazines are worth buying if in a local league you know that a couple owners use them.
I find they cut down on my research time.where I use them the most:a player is ranked #15 in one mag, but Ranked #30 in another ----> Leads me to do some research to determine why one so called expert has him ranked higher than another. sometimes it's nothing, but sometimes there is a reason.I dont mind doing my research, but the mags will cut down on the time required to get it all done. And some of the articles will be enjoyable to read (even if they dont really tell you anything you dont already know)

:goodposting: This worked great for me. After my 3-peat and 1st seed failed 4-peat attempt, I don't think anyone will be licking their chops no matter what I bring to the draft this year though.

Another :goodposting: You don't really need to do too much research on the top tier guys, but getting differing opinions on the middle and lower tiered players can make or break a fantasy season.

some of the info is not outdated. such as articles on strategy. i like mags for a few reasons.1. crapper reading2. schedules 3. useful stats

Earlier posters have pointed this out, but it bears repeating; magazines are not particularly useful, as the information and rankings are months old. That having been said, everyone does need some reading material for the bathroom, so I buy the Fantasy Guru magazine. John Hansen puts out a quality piece of work and typically fares very well in expert leagues, so his credibility is right up there.

I agree, Footballguys Mag is the Best and its free. Download the full mag and print the pages/articles you want hard copies of to the draft. 3 articles not to miss are:Perfect Draft - page 238 (This 6 page article is worth the price of the FBG subscription an dthey give it away free)From the Gut - page 234Value Players - page 80Use a 3 ring binder with sheet protectors and intimidate the other owners. Or do the opposite and bring 3 mags to the draft and play possum. Good Luck

Seriously. What is the crafty veteran going to do to the guy with the magazine. Raise his blinds more often?

I buy 1 or 2 magazines a year and I always bring them to the draft. As someone said earlier, if I have to do a quick schedule reference, it is often a handy thing to have. But more importantly, I bring it so in the 13th round, while I am running the Draft Dominator and have my radars set on certain sleepers, some moron comes over and asks to see my outdated magazine, I say, reluctantly, "I guess." Then he drafts (or brings up in auction) somebody who got hurt in the first week of preseason, it is absoulutely worth the money. It's funny because it is almost always the same guy that does it and he never seems to catch on... Last year he opened my magazine and asked me if such-in-such was hurt. I said, "No." even though I knew he had been demoted to third string. Bought Fantasy Football Weekly (Fanball) mag this year because they had a mock auction, and I like reading their strategies and discussion on their picks being I am in 2 auctions. I wish though that I had gotten Fantasy Football Index instead because they have an auction too and are even more in depth. Might still go out and get that one too.

I find it is very difficult to balance a laptop on my knees while sitting on the throne doing my business, therefore a couple of magazines are necessary.

FFI I've bought since like '90, so that's a given.

They're convenient but vastly overpriced. If they were still $3 or $4 I might still buy a couple for @#$% and giggles, but I couldn't help buy laugh at the thought of paying $8.99 or $9.99 for that garbage. Good for reading when I'm at the pool, but I'm not spending $10 to read some fat high school graduates take on Derrick Ward.

Haven't bought a mag in at least 5 years. Total waste of money for info 6 months old and out of date. If you want a quick schedule or bye week check during a draft, print those things out. Many web sites including this one makes such things available for printing.

I like the Rotoworld myself. I find them useful in that they provide stats, different projections to compare with, and a guideline to how others may draft to find potential sleepers. I also use them in my initial ranking system along with other projections. I then use up to date info to adjust from there. Plus I like the info on rookies and it's kinda cool for doing endo of season comparison to see what people (including myself) thought would happen and what actually did happen.
