Lol @ ruined. I thought it was pretty cool.
"ruined"
going on at that time, it fits right in with the time when this True story happened. It made me think all right. Made me think it was a ridicules idea.Officer Pete Malloy said:It's not.Good Posting Judge said:I don't get why the UFO's are such a problem.![]()
The problem is that their presence is forcing people to think.
yesThat was an obvious tip of the cap to Wes Anderson at the beginning, right? Shot kind of like him, especially with the book and the narration, and some of it occurring while they showed the convenience store (which was called Rushmore).
Lou Solverson: Had a case once, back in '79. I'd tell you the details, but it'd sound like I made 'em up. Madness, really.
Lorne Malvo: Bodies?
Lou Solverson: Yes, sir. One after another. Probably, if you stacked 'em high, could've climbed to the second floor. Now, I saw something that year I ain't ever seen, before or since. I'd call it animal. Except animals only kill for food. This was-- Sioux Falls. Ever been?
Although supposedly fictional, Look up "Motel 6 in Sioux City, SD". Really resembles it from the front entrance. Surroundings are completely different though when looking at Bing Maps.Speaking of homages, that motel looks like the one in No Country, doesn't it? I haven't seen it since the theater, so maybe not, but a motel massacre made me think of No Country right away.
Your conjecture <> an explanationI'm coming around a bit more to the UFO. Here's a way I think it gets "justified":
Each episode starts with "Out of respect for the dead, the rest has been told exactly as it occurred."
Lou is the only one that survives, and that's how he tells his story from there in out. (Or Peggy survives too, and she corroborates the story bc that seems like something she would do for attention). Throw that in with the "book" they showed at the beginning of the episode and it lends itself more to "how the story was told" vs what really happened.
I still don't think it was necessary and it actually detracts a tad from the overall show, but I "feel" better with the above "explanation"
The "explanation" for the viewers of the show is "that's how Lou saw it" and nobody is alive to refute it.Your conjecture <> an explanationI'm coming around a bit more to the UFO. Here's a way I think it gets "justified":

Thought so too.no he enjoyed it...he even twisted it around someyeah, I liked that too. almost like he didn't want to, but felt like he had to. kinda like, "this is what happens when you decide to play with the boys."Loved Hanzee looking at Momma andright before putting the knife into her..
When you really think about it, has Hanzee really commited any crimes?Pretty sure Hanzee just wants a haircut
Totally agree, I could have done without the UFO. The story doesn't need the UFO and it distracts from the greatness of this show. One of the things that makes this show so great is it's realism that the viewer can believe in and relate to. The UFO just doesn't fit in this show's "True Story" device and "True Crime" genre, IMO.It made me think all right. Love the show but the UFO was horrible. I'm hoping there is an explanation for it in the finale but not expecting one.
I still think he is going to use the rest of that peroxide to dye his hair blonde.Pretty sure Hanzee just wants a haircut![]()
Sure, but why not just have it "super strength" or something "unknown"? Have the gun 8 feet away, unreachable, then he blacks out or white lights and when he comes to the gun is now just inches away. Using the UFO just moves it away from believable and towards cartoonish, IMO. Still excited to see the finale tho.snogger said:Really think some are missing that Season two is 100% based on Lou saying in Season one: "Had a case once, back in '79. I'd tell you the details, but it'd sound like I made 'em up. Madness, really."
and then as Tiger fan mentioned above..
Lou needed something to explain how he didn't get killed in that moment, and his explanation was a UFO. To others, it would have been "divine intervention" or some sort.
Throw in the narrative this week reading from a book and you have The True Story from someone that was there, based on how he saw it..![]()
It isn't believable because they do or don't exist, it isn't believable because it's out of character for this genre and poorly done.I tink its hilarious that people are saying a UFO isn't believeable because they don't exist.

Peggy: It's just a flying saucer Ed, we gotta go.They're not. They left no doubt about what it was.Don't know how they're going to get around the ufo thing.
With that lead in, they should have had a zombie show up to eat Bear...Lou Solverson: Had a case once, back in '79. I'd tell you the details, but it'd sound like I made 'em up. Madness, really.

Ya'll aren't getting it.Really good episode except for the UFO. It doesn't take away from how great a show it is but it definitely was an "oh, c'mon!" moment. It wasn't necessary.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: You finally paid off the UFO teases with, yes, a massive hovering UFO. What are you prepared to tell us about this?
Noah Hawley: I haven’t prepared anything. There are going to be people who will smack the TV and go, “Come on!” and that’s a great reaction. Everybody is entitled to their reaction. I like to say that everything in there is because it actually happened in the world of our “true story,” and in this case there was a UFO. I haven’t seen or heard any of the responses yet, so I’d be responding to phantoms.

HTH
Don't think he's talking about the UFO.Im pretty indifferent about the UFO. I guess with the way Lou talked about the massacre, I expected more.
"Yes, sir. One after another. Probably, if you stacked 'em high, could've climbed to the second floor."
Didnt seem that bad to me I guess.
Regarding the UFO:
"Now, I saw something that year I ain't ever seen, before or since. I'd call it animal. Except animals only kill for food"
The UFO didnt do anything killing, so I didnt get that.

Unless there is afinale
Lou’s a very practical guy. He seizes the moment and shoots Bear — he’s taking the task at hand. I don’t think he gives [the UFO] too much credence, until the next episode. At that moment he doesn’t have time to question it. I remember thinking, “Am I dead?” There are those fleeting moments. “Do I walk to the light?” I think we’re more in that land. It’s the closest he’s gotten to death. I don’t think he’s too caught up in people from outer space at that point. We’ll address it in the way you can imagine Lou would address something.
That’s the kind of thing with this show. “Sure man, there’s a UFO. Why not?” They’ve seen everything else.
In typical Noah fashion, you ask him about it and he’s like, “I don’t know, what do you think?” He’s not like, “Well, what it represents is…” I think that, yes, there’s this obsession with a phenomenon that seemed to be happening, and it was also the rise of “Close Encounters.” There was definitely a social awareness. But I remember when I read in episode one when it appears, I thought it was fantastic because it’s just so strange. There are just no answers to so much of this. And you’re not gonna get an answer. I think people like Peggy would go, “What? It’s a flying saucer.” Then again, she’s “touched” — which is my favorite line.
