surprised at the lower numbers. i drive 80+ every day here. newer cars you're at 90 and it barely registers. i've gone over 180 on a rice rocket going downhill on the 2 freeway towards LA. and i've been over 100 in a wide variety of cars.

young and dumb, i used to set the cruise control at 111 in the rented ford t bird on the way to vegas, for hour long stretches.

and i've been over or at 150 a few times in a rented corvette, the wifes bmw, an s55 and an ss camaro, downhill.

Very true. I've crossed 100 a bunch of times in our BMW X5 and barely noticed it. We have the twin turbo with 400hp. 100mph in that car feels like 60 in other cars. Like a slow gallop. If it weren't for cops I would probably feel safe at 150 in some circumstances.

137 in a Mitsubishi Eclipse on a slight downhill going SLC to Vegas. A few seconds and I was officially freaked out enough that I don't think I've gone over 100 in the 13 years since. I do roll about 80-90 for 2 hours every day commuting.

:goodposting: Doing 100 MPH in a modern car is like going 60 thirty years ago. Cars are completely different.

i remember driving my buddy home from college, i would set the cruise at 110..... he would be flipping out.

asked what if we get a flat or something, i calmly said we will probably die.

made it home in record time.... such a ####

My step father, who was drunk, had me driving him around one night in my Moms Vette. I know we hit at least 110 when I was racing a Porsche out of a toll booth. Oh and I was 12.

Nice.
Yeah he actually had me start driving for him when I was about 11. I started driving when I was about 9 but that was all on family farms where there was no traffic. I believe this is part of why I am a bit of a scofflaw.

128 in a new Corvette when I was doing work for GM.. That was years ago. I was in the UP in Northern MI nobody was on the highway. Think I could have pushed it a little more but it felt like the front end was lifting off the ground, like a plane taking off. Plus the highway was tree lined and I felt if I blew a tire or lost it the car would disintegrate if I hit a tree at that speed. When I backed it down to 90 felt like I was crawling.

About 120 in an Infiniti G37s.

I hit the century mark in a 1990 jeep wrangler soft top though as a passenger and about 95 in a 1979 Jeep Wagoneer, both of which felt like we were going to break up on the atmosphere.

You know I forgot about the motorcycle. I was riding the back roads at Fort Bragg and opened up a V45 Magna. Just ran it through the gears. Was going 120 when I looked down. Scared myself a bit on that one.

120 in a 1990 V6 Camry.

125 in a late 90s F-150 (this was very scary)

130 in a turbo charged Miata - the most stable of the 3 at this speed.

I did something similar in Miramar. I was pretending to race a fighter jet as it took off.

Here's my response from the other fastest speed driven thread.

Buried the needle (120mph) on my 2 door 1973 Pontiac Grandville. Also took this car on a road trip and got passed by a guy with a radar detector. Tagged along with the cruise set at 105 for an hour until the tank ran dry. I also buried the needle (140mph) on my 1989 Pontiac Formula. Have kids now so I've become a "5 miles over speed limit" driver. Recently did the solo NASCAR experience at Texas Motor Speedway and got up to 139. That was far scarier than my other times. Turning at 120+ is ridiculous compared to going simply going straight.

123 in my 1991 Sentra SE-R on a two lane long straight country road

125 in my 1998 BMW 528i - this car wasn't powerful, but could move somehow. My mom was in the car when I hit 125 and it was on a highway I had been doing a normal 80 on. It was so smooth and solid at 125 she had no idea I had gotten that high!

135 in my 2003 Infiniti M45 - very powerful car

145 in my friend's 2005 Saleen Mustang. That car had power for days.

I've done 95 in my Prius...

125 in a 1984 Nissan Datsun when I was 16 and just got my license. Got on the highway for a 2 mile stretch one sunday afternoon and just floored it.

As my sons approach driving age, I'm scared.

At what speed to you start to get concerned? It depends on the car, but assume it's a good freeway car... 95 in a BMW or Audi feels very comfortable. For me, 110 is where I start worrying. I've done 120 for a few moments once or twice. Long, flat stretch of I-8 in the desert.

I'm not a thrillseeker type at all. Problem with heights, when I mountain bike I don't like the downhills, don't ski or ride a motorcycle.

In a car when I start to feel lift in the front end. On a motorcycle pretty much when I start thinking if "I hit a rock at this speed...". This is assuming dry weather and open road.

Tried to hit 100mph once in a 1988 GMC pickup. This truck had no radio, no carpet, the windows were all open, back window behind the cab open. Air was flying through the cab like a wind tunnel. When I got to 95 the whole truck was vibrating and it felt like I was going 150. 95 was all she could do.

Second fastest i have driven was 155 in my mustand cobra on the I-17 in AZ back when i was in college. Fastest i have gone was 185 at Laguna Secca race track in a Nissan GTR on the strait away. I blew my transmission in the cobra. NIssan GTR was stupid fast.

My Acura TL topped out at around 125. My Mustang (non GT) tops out around 119. Both seemed to still have more to give, but I am assuming some type of governor was keeping them from going any faster.

If you live in Houston, the spot to max your car is on the Hardy Toll Road going north. Just after the FM 1960 entrance ramp is a great stretch of road where you can see if any cops are sitting. At the end of the stretch, the road slowly elevates and then turns to the right. If you let off the gas shortly before the incline, the hill and your brakes will have you back down to 70 mph before the curve. And even if a cop is sitting on the other side of the curve, he can't shoot over the hill. I have hit top speed in my car there a couple times only to come around the bend and have a cop there. Either they didn't care I was doing 120+ mph or they can't hit you with a speed gun.

170+ E55 AMG

Car is rock solid at that speed and still pulling. I'm just chicken
Those cars are fun....I have the E550 which is basically the same w/out the blower....i regularly hit 125-130 in mine. I will say that i had an M3 pass me like i was standing still at 120 the other day.....he had to have had the super charged version.

What's the fastest anyone has gone in a Crossover? I'm asking because I'm thinking about getting one for my next car. I love their styling.

105 multiple different times in my Camaro.

One time I found myself doing 95 without realizing it in a 4 cylinder on an interstate highway on some mountain in WV. Didn't seem like I was going that fast. Couldn't believe it.

65. If you have any questions about crossovers that you'd like answered, send me a PM. Crossovers are one of my favorite topics to discuss.

I'm excited and cannot wait to hear from you!

Did about 140 in a 1978 Datsun 280 Z I had just out of High School. This was on a straight flat 2 lane county road is SE MN. Turned onto a gravel road and cranked it up to 90 while my friend rolled down the passenger window and got out to sit on the door, Dukes of Hazard style. We were high on LSD at the time. So ####### stupid.

Sober, about 125 in a rented 2010 Camaro SS.

Would that be County 8 or Hwy 30? That's where I got my Camry up to 120.

Used to speed down those roads a lot too, but this was northeast of town on county 20 IIRC, north of hwy 30. The gravel road was one that connected county 20 with county 1.

This could also be filed under "dumbest things I've ever done."

Used to take that out to Maple Valley for golf practice. There are some great corners down by the River on 20 and 1.

ticketed at 139 back in the early 80s, jail time and around $1400.00 in fines/tickets/towing plus the SOBs broke the t-tops on my stingray
