Maybe CC Sabathia does indeed want to work close to home.

Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti told ESPN.com's Jayson Stark on Monday that he ran into the free agent on Sunday night in a hotel lobby and the left-hander told him that he wants to be a Dodger.

Although the New York Yankees and Milwaukee Brewers have made offers to the prize of the free-agent class, speculation continued that Sabathia would want to play near the home he is building in Southern California

It's also been said that Sabathia's agent has suggested to him that he should get as many teams involved as possible. It's very likely he goes to the Yankees anyway, so why not get them to add another $10-15 mil on top of their offer? If CC says to the Dodgers that he'd play for them if they got close, and they come forward with an offer of $120 mil over 6 years, he could go back to the Yankees and tell them that they're leaning towards accepting the LA offer unless the Yanks upgrade. They will. And he'll sign.

No offense to Yankee fan, but how fantastic would it be if Sabathia spurns the Yanks and their money to play for less in the senior circuit? I for one would be thrilled - and I detest the Dodgers. I have no faith in the greedy athlete however. Surprise me CC. (Just don't go back to the Brewers).

I'm ok with him going to the Dodgers and hope he does.

Really? Why would you not want CC?

I heard yesterday that his wife has asked him to talk to teams in California. Maybe that is just his agents way of getting him talking to more teams. I would love to see him stay in the NL.

Yeah it's obvious that all things being equal, he'd prefer to be out west. It's just that things aren't equal as of now, and $30-$40 mil is a lot of cash to leave on the table. I've said since before the offseason that he wouldn't leave the money on the table and I'd be shocked if the Yanks let him get away. Especially considering he's legitimately interested.I think he needed to be "sold" on coming to NY but at least he's feeling them out, asking questions about what it's like to live here. I read the other day on LoHud that the Yanks have Reggie Jackson talking to him. Bay area guy, came to NY as a free agent to become a legend for a stretch, then went back home, all good.

I don't think the Dodgers would be the match, though. They already inked Blake and Loretta, and are rumored to be after Pettitte. Not that they can't also pay CC, but it's not like those are their only issues. They might also be in the market for a closer from what I've read, and they also need a SS to replace Furcal. The Giants are not legitimate in my opinion. Which leaves the Angels (if they lose out on Tex to the Red Sox), Brewers, and Yankees. I think you can eliminate the Brewers. If CC was going to take that much less $$$, he'd do it to go to Cali, not Wisconsin.

UPDATED: Giants talk to Sabathia’s camp; Yanks rumored to be out, Brewers emerging

Posted by Andrew Baggarly on December 9th, 2008 at 1:18 pm | Categorized as Uncategorized

UPDATE: An executive close to the CC Sabathia talks told me the perception is that the Brewers are emerging as the frontrunner.

It’s been confirmed to me that the Giants had discussions with CC Sabathia’s camp last night, and they expect to have face-to-face meetings with the left-hander in San Francisco after the winter meetings.

It sure must’ve have been a productive discussion, because word is that Sabathia has declined the Yankees’ six-year, $140 million offer. (I must stress that’s unconfirmed, but talk is spreading fast. If true, look for the Yanks to get hyper-aggressive on A.J. Burnett.)

I’ve been told by a reliable source that the Giants don’t necessarily need to clear payroll to sign Sabathia, though they’ll have to get creative with the money. It’s possible the Giants could seek to defer a sizable chunk of the contract beyond 2017, when they finish paying off the debt service on AT&T Park.

All of this appears to fit what GM Brian Sabean said last week: The only way the Giants have a shot at Sabathia or Mark Teixeira is if “for some reason that animal stayed out there and it would be a much longer process.” This much is clear: Sabathia will not be holding anyone’s jersey aloft in the press room here at the Bellagio.

Giants managing partner Bill Neukom left Las Vegas this morning. Neukom has resisted all efforts to pin down the Giants’ payroll outlook for next season, though it’s believed they have more to spend than they’re letting on. Despite the economic issues plaguing the country, the Giants signed a massive 25-year TV contract with Comcast last year and their largest revenue streams will not be affected in the short term.

4:09pm: Baggarly talked to an exec close to the Sabathia talks who believes the Brewers are emerging as the frontrunner.

I knew there was some rumor floating around when my iPhone suddenly lit up with a dozen e-mails. Yep. Somebody reported that CC Sabathia turned down the Yankees. It’s not true.

Here is what is known for sure on CC:

Yankees: Have an offer on the table. Nothing has changed.

Brewers: Have an offer on the table. Contrary to some reports, they have not raised it. Sabathia did not bother to hang around Vegas yesterday to meet with them. He sent his agents.

Red Sox: Have met with Sabathia and possibly have made an offer. Terry Francona laughed out loud when asked about the idea of a long-term deal. File this under the Red Sox making trouble.

Angels: They have prioritized Mark Teixeira but could make Sabathia an offer if only to drive the Teixeira process. Teixeira, according to Torii Hunter, is having trouble sleeping and wants to ake a decision soon.

Giants: Depending what you want to believe, they could be in the mix.

It’s going to be a long week.

Dear CC,

Screw it, I said I was going to up the offer but here we go. On our softball team we need a pitcher, unlimited arc, and we could use a LH bat. Now, you get the ball every game to pitch so this may take a toll on your arm but you are a big guy and you can handle it. With that, we will bat you 7th, right after a slap hitting righty with an OBP of around .600 so you will have opportunites to drive in runs. Our porches are around 275 all around so with your power you may be able to put one out. Here is the offer:

2 Year Deal (Club Option for a third)

Guarenteed SP for the first year. If that doesn't work, we can put you at first or C in the 2nd year.

Beer (3) and your choice of either a hotdog or a brat after every game.

Performance bonus of a hamburger for every two homeruns you hit, rounded down.

Also, I have a spare room that you may use four times throughout the season after the game.

You have until the end of the week to make your choice.
