Favorable Week One Kickers (1 Viewer)

While some people probably have their kicker already, I'm sure others have been carrying an extra position player through the preseason. Now that the preseason is over and final cuts have been made, it's time to pick up a kicker.

While some people here probably prefer to roll with one kicker for the season, I'm sure many of us prefer playing the matchups when it comes to kicker. This thread is for us.

What kicker is sitting in your free agent pool that you think has the potential to put up a lot of points (for a kicker) in week one?

Here are a few I like

Shayne Graham - Cincinnati - vs. DEN

Graham has made 87% or more of his field goals in six out of the last seven seasons. The Bengals are playing Denver in week one who gave 28 ppg last season and I don't really think they did a lot to improve their defense in the offseason. Although the Bengals finished 32nd in ppg last season, they were without Carson Palmer much of the season. With his return, the offense could be rolling against a likely horrid defense like the Broncos.

Adam Vinatieri - Indianapolis - vs. JAX

Other then last year, whoever has been the Colts kicker has been a mainstay in the top 10 for kickers. I think Vinatieri should rebound this season although he's not quite as valuable in leagues that gives bonuses for longer kicks. This is more of a season pick then it is a week one pick.

Edit to add: Remembered the Colts also kept kicker Shane Andrus. Although Vinatieri played in the preseason finale against the Bengals, he has been hurt during most of the preseason. This could be a sign he might not be ready to go in week one so definitely check injury information on Saturday night or Sunday morning to see if Vinatieri is going to play.

Josh Scobee - Jacksonville - @IND

I don't have any figures in front of me, but it seemed liked that while the Colts defense had trouble getting off the field last year, they were pretty good at keeping the opposing team out of the redzone. The Jags should be improved offensively this year with a healthier offensive line.

K Brown vs the JETS defense should be solid. I think the Texans will move the ball, but the JETS solid DEF may cause hold them from scoring TDs...hence many FG opps.

I like Graham out of the guys you listed.

I'd add Rob Bironas vs. Pittsburgh to that list.

The Titans are going to have trouble with LenWhale trying to punch the ball into the end zone on the Steelers. Bironas should have 2-3 FGs in that game.

John Carney vs Det. Lots of scoring and he's a FA in most leagues on account of not being in a stable K situation.

you are in a bad league if it allows you to not leave the draft room with a complete roster.

Steven Haushcka, I don't think there is a game on the schedule that screams one sided blowout more than Baltimore-KC.

FYI - these kinds of comments aren't encouraged here.
well, they should be. why would anyone want to enter a league with that flimsy of rules? it is just going to lead to problems in the future if that isn't something that is covered in the rules. its not a 'are you playing in a 3-team league' kind of criticism./

John Carney V detroit. (replacement since garret hartley tested + for adderall)

Lions D and Brees O? Thats 6-15 pts right there depending on how many fgs he actually kicks. i have to think with The new coaches D background they have to make an occasional stop, but it will be in field goal range.

Agreed... I added him a couple of days ago. Grabbed the Texans DST as well... Sanchez is probably good for a pick or two.

I don't see what is so flimsy about it. SOME people pick and choose kickers based on matchups each week. If your one of these people and you get your defense and kicker off the WW each week, not drating one is a perfectly acceptable strategy, ESPECIALLY if the roster is really small. Why not draft a couple of extra players in curious playing time situations like Davis and Matt Jones and leave your kicker or defense for a pre season pick up? ESPECIALLY if your draft is pretty early, there are situations that arent CLOSE to resolved early. I would agree the rules are flimsy ONLY if no pre season WW was run. In that situation I would agree that it must be mandatory to draft a full lineup.

WAIVER WIRE K's only
Unless 75% of the league doesn't draft kickers or just didn't pay attention to last yr... I can't see how Bironas would be on the WW... he had an excellent yr.

With razor thin margins between a top 5/top 10 K and a WW pickup K, lots of experienced FFer choose to not draft a kicker.A flimsy rule would be, say, allowing a team to field an incomplete lineup without any penalty. But since many of us in redrafts held our draft after week 2 or week 3 of the preseason - when kicking battles are far from clear - there are def a lot of guys looking at this topic right now. Timely thread.re: Graham - still nursing a groin injury, though he is expected to kick Week 1. Along with Jason Hanson and Vinateri (both still recovering from surgery), I think a wait and see might be in order.Tynes is a bit maddening with his inconsistency at times, but I figure he will get plenty of opportunities this year, and I like him as a sleeper.Rackers was way down the charts for most, and is probably the best kicker/biggest name available in many leagues.I'm intrigued by the Baltimore guy but haven't seen enough of him. I know he nailed a 46 yarder (and another FG) Week 4, but didn't he also missed a chip shot in Week 3?Hartley might be a good one to stash in a few weeks. Carney doesn't really have the distance anymore to go all season, so if nobody drafted the Saints starter, he should be a good play after his 4 game suspension is up.

i will just agree to disagree with anyone who chooses to play in this type of league. thankfully, my league has these rules in place thankfully.

thankfully. what difference does it make if someone picks a kicker in the last round or picks an extra player who will in turn be dropped before week 1 when he needs a kicker? I don't care if they pick a te during the draft either. Or a rb. All I know is that when the season starts they have to start a pk and a te and the other positions. If they don't have one, tough ####.

Anyone know if Hartley is guaranteed to get his job back after his suspension?

I'm in a no trades, must draft 2 kicker league with a draft on Tuesday. If he's guaranteed to be back, I'd take him and another kicker with a bye after week 4.

I guess most free online leagues require you to draft a K during your draft. Have a great season.

Nope, shockingly enough, no jobs are guarenteed in the NFL. Guess you'll need another strategy.I think the guy arguing over requirements to draft a kicker is the type who would make someone who accidently drafted Adrian Peterson of the Bears 1.01 keep his pick.

In the salary cap league I commish the only roster requirements are the starting rosters. 8 starters, 8 bench. You don't want to carry a kicker or spend all of your $, fine. It's your team. I drafted no kicker or defense. In fact, after 9 players I quit drafting. That said, I picked up Scobee and the Cardinals defense.

This should be a no-brainer. Carney with NO against the Lions. Has the makings of a scoregasm for the Saints. Carney most likely a free agent in most leagues.

I actually drafted Gould and I am considering picking up Carney for this matchup.
