Favorite 31 Songs by US Artists According to a Bunch of Middle-Aged Dummies (8 Viewers)

Thanks for the hard work guys! I don't participate to the fullest, but I do enjoy the process, and the back, and forth.

Is it a good time to post that I have floor seats to Billy Joel and Stevie Nicks in Philly? I know you're all jealous.

Christine Perfect, John McVie, Danny Kirwan, Peter Green
Jeremy Spencer, Buckingham, SC Trojans Marching Band
Stevie is a dancing twirler, Bob Welch, Not the hurler
Go Your Own Way, Ocean Spray, what else do I have to say?

We didn't start the fire, etc.

Comments on some first timers

Love and Happiness - A great song and a great time to move the Reverend out of the one trick pony group. Everything works so perfectly, the intro (love and happiness, something that can make you do wrong, make you do right), the guitar riff, the descending organ line contrasting with the rising horn fanfare. And that groove.

Desperados under the Eaves - I'm glad to see Zevon's eponymous second album get some love after all the Excitable Boy picks. The blue album has always been my favorite and The French Inhaler was a late cut for me. Speaking of opening lines - I was sitting in the Hollywood Hawaiian Hotel, I was staring in my empty coffee cup sets the mood from the start.

The Way - This song was in rotation on Radio Disney, which was ditkaburgers first exposure to music of her own. A few of her songs were from the Radio Disney days: the Michelle Branch cut and the one from the Goofy Movie (I2I). I know she was paying attention in the back set and she chose them wisely. Mrs. E has memories of dancing in the kitchen with ditkaburgers to the Fastball song.

Wall of Denial - Stevie Ray had some tone. My sister the lawyer represented the Double Trouble bass player when she used to practice in Austin. I rue the day her partner didn't get tenure at UT because Austin was a nicer place to visit than Columbia, SC.

Mercy Mercy Me: Also good to see it get some attention and not get lost in the love for What's Going On. Side 1 of the album is magnificent. I would have gone with Let's Get It On if I had room for Marvin but I'm a lover.

I'd like to give a special prize for the countdown. There are no winnings associated with this other than my great admiration. First, the runner-up, who will be crowned the champion if for any reason the winner cannot complete his term. The runner-up is... @MAC_32 !

But the winner of the first Wikkidpissah Memorial Award for Great Personal Storytelling in the Context of a Music Thread on a Fantasy Football Message Board Full of Middle-Aged Dummies is...

🥁

@Uruk-Hai !

In all seriousness, I really loved the stories not only from these two, but lots of other folks that I started to name and then backspaced in fear that I would forget someone. So many personal moments shared that helped me understand your connections to the music and to understand...you! I love learning of new music in these endeavors, but I love this part of it even more. Thank you for that.

I've received word that the Rannouses have made their donation to Chance for Hope as well. It's a charity that they already generously support without regard to contests like these, so big props to them. Huge :thanks: to them for this additional amount. From this thread, Chance for Hope has today received $600 on the occasion of Chance's 23rd birthday. Can't get much better than that.

What do you guys think would be a good deadline for the next one? I want to give everyone plenty of time (and give me time to recover), but I know some will be eager to get going. I'd originally thought of starting the countdown on Feb. 1, but it doesn't need to be the 1st of a month (this one wasn't), especially since Feb is 28 days anyway. Thinking maybe we could start a little earlier than that, with lists due Jan. 13 or Jan. 20 or what have you.

Whatever works for you. Didn't you drunkenly book a trip to Amsterdam?

Whoa. Been under the weather for the past two days, so I really just want to check in and say thanks to krista4 for running this enormous countdown. I also want to give thanks to falguy and Hov34 and Hawks64 and Val Rannous for all their contributions to the counting, math, and playlisting.

Happy Holidays to all of you who participated and commented along the way. I wish nothing but the best for you guys.

Peace,

I did! But then I non-drunkenly canceled that trip and subbed in one to Palm Springs instead. Due to some personal crap, I need a getaway where I don't feel compelled to do much of anything. The idea of going to a central spot in Europe to be able to visit lots of other cool spots was not what I needed, as I'd be stressing to see things. Instead, in Palm Springs I can spend a couple of days at Joshua Tree, which I've never visited and will also tie into our countdown ( ), and otherwise I can do...nothing. That trip is going to be early/mid January, so I'll be back and better than ever for the next countdown.

So @shuke , you've obviously moved up Marquee Moon a lot since the time of your top 1000 list. Any other big changes since then?

Marshall Tucker Band - This Ol' Cowboy
301011.
Fruit Bats - Humbug Mountain Song
31127.
Spinto Band - Oh Mandy

My picks for this thread for Phish and JGB were different from my other thread. A lot depends on mood for some of these bands.

Fruit Bats is the obvious big one here, but remember my initial thread started out at 1000 counting down (Binky up) to 1. Anything after 1000 was added later, either I had forgotten about it, or in the case of this song, hadn't discovered it before the start of the thread. Humbug Mountain Song would have definitely been much higher in my countdown.

Time to reveal the big winners. Who picked the most songs here from that thread...

Known-to-me favorites from #1, aside from my pick, Like a Rolling Stone, which was my #5, and Good Vibrations, which was my #14:

Tangled Up in Blue -- Bob Dylan (Neal Cassady)
Whipping Post -- The Allman Brothers Band (Doc Oc and jwb)
(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay -- Otis Redding (Landryshat)
God Only Knows -- The Beach Boys (AAABatteries)
Three Days -- Jane's Addiction (Scorchy)
The Want of a Nail -- Todd Rundgren (Binky)
Mercy, Mercy Me (The Ecology) -- Marvin Gaye (Rockaction)
Bridge Over Troubled Water -- Simon & Garfunkel (Mrs. Rannous)
Bridge Over Troubled Water -- Aretha Franklin (Ilov80s)
Fast Car -- Tracy Chapman (Chaz)
The Ballad of El Goodo -- Big Star (Krista4)
Straight On -- Heart (Simsarge)
Love and Happiness -- Al Green (Hov34)
Little Red Corvette -- Prince (DrIanMalcolm)
Drift Away -- Dobie Gray (Uruk-Hai)
I Want You Back -- The Jackson 5 (Eephus)
Turn the Page -- Bob Seger (Falguy)
Black -- Pearl Jam (Just Win Baby)
Hot Burrito #1 -- The Flying Burrito Brothers (Marco)

I generally called out songs that finished in the top third of my list as it was constituted at the time. It wasn't an exact calculation, but more or less if it ranked higher than Stop Draggin' My Heart Around, which was 1/3 of the way through the #31s, I put it in these posts.

With 19 songs (21 if you count Good Vibrations and Like a Rolling Stone, which appeared on my list), round #1 had the most known-to-me citations, which shouldn't be a surprise.

Also, keep in mind while a lot of these look like they made huge leaps up the rankings, it's partly because of how many ineligible artists there were for this thread.

Yeah, I asked about Marquee Moon, though, because it had leapt over other songs that were eligible for both. I'm no dummy!

Pip’s Invitation:
Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana
(duplicate – sixth vote)

This is one of those "this song changed my life" moments. I spent high school and the first two years of college mostly listening to what we now call "classic rock." I was bummed that current music didn't have that same kind of impact on me. I couldn't stand the way a lot of records were produced in the '80s, and I couldn't relate to a lot of the newer acts at the time (I came to appreciate some of them much more in later years). Appetite for Destruction was the one album that bucked that trend, but I wasn't really a metal guy, so while I enjoyed it, it didn't move me in the same way the best records by Neil, Zeppelin, etc. did. I was resigned to loud music that really spoke to me being a thing of the past. I saw that Nevermind started getting a lot of buzz in the music press, but even then I was skeptical of what was being promoted as the next big thing, because often it turned out to be lame.

Then I came home fall break of junior year, turned on the radio in our TV room, and heard this song for the first time. :jawdrop:This was the kind of thing I was looking for, and I instantly understood what the big deal was. It's hard to put into words what I felt, but it was a visceral impact. I needed more of it. I went out and bought Nevermind and eventually discovered the other grunge bands. And all of the sudden I had a cadre of music that wasn't from the past. In one's college years that's a big deal, as you are building your identity, if music is important to you. I spent much of the next 15 years chasing the :jawdrop:because of that moment. And I often found it.

It's grown on me more and more through the years.

New Binky the Doormat:

The Want of a Nail – Todd Rundgren
(new song)

In my Hello It's Me writeup I mentioned that in 1989, Todd put out an album called Nearly Human that was recorded the same way as side 4 of Something/Anything?: Live on the first take after Todd taught the session musicians the song. This is its first track and lead single, and is one of the best songs of his career, and arguably the best song he released after 1978. While Todd had demonstrated facility with the smoother side of soul, drawing on it for some of his best compositions (and including a medley of soul ballads on his otherwise deeply weird follow-up to Something/Anything?, A Wizard, A True Star), here he handles the grittier side of soul with equal aplomb, aided by Bobby Womack.

I’ve received confirmation that the donations have been received and booked. Thank you all so so much. We’ve expanded both our housing. (now six separate residences) and meal delivery (at two hospitals now, as well as snack carts at four outpatient facilities) programs, so these donations make a huge difference in helping fund these efforts. ❤️🎈

The Boxer will always have a place in my heart that will never fade.

I mention when I was discussing Cats in the Cradle that nighttime routine with my son was always mine. He was also a baby that dealt alot with croupe, so there were many many sleepless nights holding him so he didn't cough too much. We always have music playing in the house so I would listen to music while holding him in his room and rather quickly I would start singing all the songs to him as well as a way to calm him down.

Whenever The Boxer would come on and I would sing that the "lie la lie" parts it became his lullabye and would calm him down more than anything. Eventually me holding him and singing The Boxer to him was always enough to calm him down and get him to sleep. So, for years, I would sing The Boxer to my son when he couldn't sleep for any reason. Did the same with my youngest as well. And while he isn't my sidekick anymore, whenever we are together and we hear The Boxer come on he always says, "good song."

Yes it is.
Have you listened to S&G's version from their Concert in Central Park album where they add an extra verse? It's good.

When you picked How Great Thou Art I was thinking I should have picked Why Me from Kris Kristofferson. I thought about adding a song by him, but I couldn't decide what to pick, but Why Me is definitely up there in favorites by him. He sang it when I saw him about 4 years ago, and it made me happy. It was pouring rain during his set, and I had a poncho on (that looked more like a trash bag), and it was like a heavenly shower coming down on me while he sang it. He is one of those artist that doesn't have a great voice, but he is a great songwriter. k4 mentioned to me that she would have taken Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down from him if she had thought of it before completing her list.

How I got there:
Smells Like Teen Spirit, Marquee Moon, Superstition, Jesus Christ Pose, One Big Holiday, Race for the Prize, Machine Gun, Aja, Makes No Sense at All: Taken in the Desert Island draft I did on another board.
Eight Miles High, She's Gone, Use Me, Super Stupid, Back to Basom: Taken in the This Is Their Best Song draft.
Let's Stay Together: My #1 Al Green and a song I got attached to during my Lost Years.
Like a Rolling Stone: My #1 Dylan and what I took with the first overall pick of a Dylan song draft I did on another board.
What's Going On: My #1 Marvin Gaye and what I believe to be one of the most important songs in American culture.
Hello It's Me: My #1 Todd and I had to have him on this list.
In Memory of Elizabeth Reed: My #1 Allmans and I had to have them on this list.
Papa Was a Rollin' Stone: A song that has always moved me, from when I was very young.
Good Vibrations: My #1 Beach Boys and an important development in the progression of pop music.
Everyday People: My #1 Sly and the highest-ranked song in my 1969 countdown of tunes not included in Tim and Bracie's countdowns.
Heliotropic: My #1 from Fantastic Planet rotates (when I did the Desert Island Draft, it was Sergeant Politeness) but currently this is it, and I had to have something from it on this list.
When My Baby's Beside Me: Has always been my #1 Big Star ever since I put on the #1Record/Radio City combined CD that was sold in the '90s. Plus it's a bit like having a bonus Todd song because it could have fit in on Something/Anything?
Everlong: My #1 Foos and perhaps my most-played song of the late '90s that wasn't Phish.
Where It's At: My #1 Beck and its inclusion in Doc Oc's exercise made me think of it for this list.
Sex Machine: My first-round pick in the Soul/Funk/R&B songs draft I did on another board.
I Say A Little Prayer: My #1 Aretha and my list would otherwise have been all-male.
I Am Trying to Break Your Heart: My #1A Wilco and I wanted them on the list.
Maze: I wanted Phish represented since I spent the late '90s and early '00s immersed in them, and I think this is their best studio track that could appeal to people who don't care for "jam" music.
Refugee: My #1 Petty that I got sniped on in a Petty song draft I did on another board with DrIanMalcolm. My first-round pick in that draft was Breakdown, which amazingly was not one of the 16 Petty songs picked here.
