Favorite 31 Songs by US Artists According to a Bunch of Middle-Aged Dummies (2 Viewers)

I just added five songs to my last five out, in case anybody clicked the links that Hov34 and krista4 posted. I know this is highly, highly unlikely, but it's there if you give it a click. These were sort of in the back of my record collection or forgotten about during the crafting of the original list. I think each of these could have easily made the list.

New songs include:

Black Star - Respiration
Vince Staples - 3230
New Bomb Turks - Born Toulouse-Lautrec
NOFX - Linoleum
Vampire Weekend - Everlasting Arms

OHBOYOHBOYOHBOYOHBOY, HERE. WE. GO.

If you sent me links, I've included your link. If you didn't (which is fine), then I've inserted the first link that came up on YouTube. If you'd like a different version, please go ahead and post it.

I'll be presenting these in the same order for each number, which is generally the order in which I received lists.

Number 31

Doug B:

'Southern Nights' - Allen Toussaint

'Southern Nights' is kind of special for locals ... and I think people who are only familiar with Glen Campbell's cover will get a lot out of the songwriter's personal version. Decades went by before Toussaint released 'Southern Nights' live -- not until the 2013 album Songbook. The performance is from an intimate 2009 show at a place called Joe's Pub in, I think, New York. There is a lengthy (but worth it!) spoken word section about two minutes into the song, with Toussaint's piano accompanying his words the whole time through.
Joe’s Pub is (was?) in NYC. I’ve been there.

I like Campbell’s version better but listening to both gives you a good sense of how strong a songwriter Toussaint was.

Faves from the Number 31s:

Just Win Baby:
Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around (1981), from Bella Donna – Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

Uruk-Hai:
Minnie The Moocher-Cab Calloway

New Binky the Doormat:
For The Love Of Money - The O'Jays

Pip’s Invitation:
Refugee -- Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

Dr. Octopus:
Fly Me Courageous – Drivin N Cryin (one of my list of 60-ish, glad to see it get repped)

Chaz McNulty:
Cat's in the Cradle - Harry Chapin

Don Quixote:
Fanfare for the Common Man - New York Philharmonic conducted by Aaron Copland (Yes! Especially with ELP's version ineligible)

DrIanMalcolm:
What a Fool Believes, the Doobie Brothers (love Kenny Loggins, but listen to Loggins' original to appreciate how high Michael McDonald lifted this song)

falguy:
Stand By Me - Ben E. King

Eephus:
The Humpty Dance - Digital Underground (another Group of 60ish cut)

Hov34:
Float On - Modest Mouse (Floaters cover?)

AAABatteries:
Be My Baby - The Ronettes

Zegras11:
Reelin' In The Years - Steely Dan

My number thirty-one, Aesop Rock's ZZZ Top is there simply because it is a love letter to anyone who is passionate about music. Through three verses, Aesop puts us in the mind of a listener moved by three bands: Led Zeppelin (Zoso); Afrika Bambaatta (Zulu) of Planet Rock fame; and The Zeros, who were a Latino punk band from San Diego. He deftly sketches each protagonist and notes their markings upon various items (desks, shoes, a bathroom stall) made in deference to the music that moves them so much.

Hence the intro.

Aesop Rock - ZZZ Top

I hadn’t heard this song before - I liked it a lot.

Ditto.

I had a killer job in a backup band playin' guitar in Branson
Two shows a night brought the money to chase down sin
Now it's another weekend and I'm lonely at home
Late night TV, evangelist drone
I'm healthy now but I really don't know if I'll ever be free

Oh boy, whoever picked Son Volt really brought it. Bravo! Never heard it before. Immediate impact.

So many great picks today, I hate to single them out, but this was a wallop of a track.

@worrierking

Vegas odds have posted a betting of line of 1 to 99, not 99 to 1, that I will absolutely not know one of @rockaction 's 31 songs.

LOL. I dig that. But you absolutely will know a few them. I guarantee it. My list doesn't get really esoteric and some of the songs are so universal that you'll at least know of them, if not be able to hum them immediately.

Farrar and Tweedy are a couple of super talented artists. Uncle Tupelo split into two of my favorite bands.

Love the Minnie the Moocher choice

I think I'm the only frat boy in the world to have heard of the song first through Cab and not through The Blues Brothers. They're going to take my Greek letters away for that transgression, I guarantee.

No, I loved the origins of swing and big band just before it got cool and broke in '96-'98 (?) with the swing revival. I am not hip, though, it came to the fore for me in terms of outright listening because of the movie Swing Kids, so you can dock me exponential points for having had seen the movie, knowing the music, not walking out, and actually liking the music unironically.

Tons
of weed helped out that decision-making process, and you can all blame me for those revival acts that were huge in '97. I was supposed to be their target audience. They failed at that, but I have a complete and pretty much totally unironic or winking love of big band and swing from all of that.

Sorry to anyone who wanted to submit and didn't meet the deadline, but I need to cut this off. I'll include Doug B's selections, but yesterday I had put all of this data into a billion different charts to look at a billion different ways and tabulated it all in different documents, and re-doing all of that work is turning out to be a huge PITA. I can't bear the thought of doing it a third or fourth time if more lists come in. :frown:

I became aware of UT toward the end of their run (and saw them on their last tour), and was impressed with Farrar and Tweedy from the getgo. I thought the first Son Volt album was better than the first Wilco album, but after that, Wilco kept expanding their sound and doing unexpected things every album, and Son Volt seemed like it kept doing the same stuff with diminishing returns, so after a while I stopped keeping up with SV.

So I’d never heard Methamphetamine, a pretty recent song. before. And I liked it very much.

Now that I've said this I'm already feeling guilty about it.

It's been a bad day. I'm still enmeshed in the matter I referenced (without detail) two weeks ago, which hasn't been resolved. I'm on day 11 of Squibby isolation and trying to make sure he eats but doesn't eat his sutures. I'm running a charity event for work that is taking up an inordinate amount of time. And my mom had foot surgery this morning, so I got up at 5 a.m. to start fixing some food that I just took over to her. If she's not cooking, I'm not sure how her husband will manage to get them fed.

And I have a regular job (for now). Bleh.

The top 3 of Round 31 - Stand By Me, Funkadelic, and Baby Love

My top 3 of Round 31 (there is a difference) - What A Fool Believes, Humpty Dance, and Cat's In The Cradle

Guilty pleasure - WE HAVE A TIE!!! I Hate Myself For Loving You and To Be With You

Round 31 newcomer (for me) - Drivin N Cryin's Fly Me Courageous was real cool, but this round goes to Aesop Rock, ZZZ Top. Both are getting added to the shuffle and could find its way into the rotation, but the latter was a head turner.

Round 31 gold medal winner - Little Richard, Long Tall Sally...in a slaughter. This was one of the many that didn't make my final cut, but on another day may have survived. Stand By Me may be a better song, but I don't care god dammit. This is MY list. Fortunate Son was the right call over this one, but I may second guess some other decisions over this one...

Sorry to hear about all that is going on.. You gave everyone here plenty of time. Thanks for your efforts putting this together!

JFC. I'm sitting on the floor with Squibby trying to input Doug's picks, and suddenly the overhead light fixture fell on me. It landed on my calf, and scared Squibby to death. He's now back out from under the futon and doesn't seem to be scathed, thank god. I'll end up with a nasty bruise. Wtf.

**** it. I see Bluesbomber is here, and he is one of those I was concerned about, in terms of getting his list in. I know he's worked on it. If he sends tonight, I'll include. Same for Northern Voice. (And for HellToupee, but I assume he has more important matters to attend to.)

Gentle reminder to be circumspect in your "this didn't make my list" or "this is the bestest song evah"-type posts. As of now, no problem with anything that's been posted, but as we get into some of the heavier hitters, please just be cautious to avoid spoilers as much as possible.

Not to downplay your busy schedule but have to admit I thought of this...

probably cause it was just on tv yesterday.

To be serious, sorry about your crazy schedule. Thats a lot on one plate.

Bluesbomber confirmed he wasn't able to get a list together, but hopefully he'll be an active participant in the thread. :)

Mrs. Rannous:

Magic - The Cars

I'm traveling this week so will be sporadic in commenting (and the promised "commentary to come" may not). Left my headphones home and the wife is sleeping 5' away so I can't even listen to the many I haven't heard, so besides my 70's schmalz pick (love that song) I'm going to go with Magic as my favorite of the bunch - just a great song during a great summer (HS Graduation) . There are a few Cars songs I may like better, but Magic is always welcome when it comes on.

Great start!

Sure thing. I think a lot comments like that are born from just wanting to shout out a few people for their picks. Personally, I'll make a note to now be judicious about what I say. But I know I like when people shout me out.

That said, I'll be sure to try and avoid revealing spoilers in the future. There's a fine line there, and it can be found.

BTW, sorry about the fixture. A garage door almost fell on my mother the other night (the large metal thing on the bottom fell off while it was raised) and it gave her and us quite a scare.

:lmao: Love it.

I'm just kvetching. I don't have it so bad or anything. I'm under a bit more stress because we just moved, and usually I have everything in place within a week after a move. I do have all the boxes unpacked and things put somewhere, but not in the orderly fashion I'd want, and no recent time to fix that. Disorder doesn't work well for me, mentally.

And apparently I need to replace a light fixture.

I was going to post the standings for the Charity Contest after each round, but right now all it tells you is who voted for Tom Petty as best artist. So, we have a ??? way tie between ????????????????????????????????????? for 1st place at 2 points, with everyone else tied for second at 0 points. It does tell you nobody picked any of these songs, and nobody picked any of these other artists selected in this round.

More details (hopefully) after round 30.

Yowza, glad your mother avoided that.

As to my post, it's not meant to be critical of anything posted thus far. DEFINITELY love and want the "these are my favorites from this bunch"-type posts. Like I said, a gentle reminder as we get further along.

I just moved into this house Oct. 20, so I don't know how long it's been here, but I did not install it new or anything.

It’ll be interesting to see at what point it becomes apparent who the “OMG this artist has 12 different votes for 12 different songs” teasers apply to.

For the time being don't stand under any other ones. :oldunsure:

It’s because you cut off submissions. I mean, some of us have annoying jobs!

….As witch doctors…..

Favorite moments from list #31:

Surprise moment: Fanfare for the Common Man, Aaron Copland - Wow, didn't even think of this, but I love it, big Copland fan. Great pick.

Best song on the list for me, 1st place: Minnie the Moocher, Cab Calloway - My parents had a lot of Big Band period records around, so I also knew of Cab before "The Blues Brothers". However, I LOVED the version backed by the Blues Brothers band, when Cab stole the show at the ripe old age of 73! (Seen here with an extra verse that was cut from the film: "Minnie the Moocher")

Best song on the list for me, 2nd place: I Hate Myself for Loving You, Joan Jett - Since this shows on my "Last 5 out", I'm safe in not spotlighting anything when I say I REALLY wanted this on my list, but just ran out of damn room! Grr.

Please don't overthink my "be cautious" warning. No one has said anything they shouldn't nor do I wish to tamp down discussion. Just a reminder for the future when it will get harder not to spoil.

@worrierking

Happy to have introduced a song that somebody else enjoyed. I remember when I first heard it, in 2014 or 15 at a very low point in my life. I was caring for my aging parents and had little help from my family. I had just learned that I had advanced arthritis in my hip, and it was likely to halt my career as a marathon runner. I was gaining weight and losing sleep and drinking too much. Worrierqueen and I weren't getting along. We came home from a birthday party and continued drinking heavily. I put Pandora on our stereo and this song popped on. I remember shushing my wife when I heard it, as I was trying to listen to the brilliant but depressing lyrics.

I am hoping to be introduced to some new tunes that I can add to my collection. I won't be getting much work done for the next couple of weeks!

Also found some unlistenable. :lmao:
What she said. Some good, some "Really?!?" moments.

What's been fantastic, among other things, about the discussion today is that no one has said, "How could you pick that?" It's all been very positive, and I hope it will stay that way in terms of specific commentary.

Really amazing discussion today. I'm about to put together the list for tomorrow's post, and I'm excited to see what comes tomorrow!

I also want to mention that even though I kvetched about a late addition, I'm really happy to have Doug B's list. It's super interesting and a great mix of stuff that I don't know and find intriguing, songs I'd forgotten about, and some classics. Great addition to this exercise!
