Favorite 31 Songs by US Artists According to a Bunch of Middle-Aged Dummies (2 Viewers)

Yeah, this exercise made me really think and decide how I wanted to go about it. I decided that I wanted to "reward" my favorite artists and also songs that are very sentimental to me. I have songs that remind me of my wife (several), kids (a couple) and then things like Christmas, which is just a huge holiday in our family. Somewhat spoilerish but I have one other Christmas song on my list because I think it's "better" but this one is my favorite. I listen to it every Christmas Eve sitting around the fire drinking whiskey. And Cole was just a phenomenal talent.

Off the top of my head I recall two other Christmas songs that were selected in addition to your two. Could be more.

Bunch of Scrooges in here.

Hmmm ... I wonder if it's going to be the second one I cut? The song I'm thinking about is, vocally, a technical knockout. It is not a "new classic" -- it's one that would've been popular when many/most Boomers were children.

Good chance it's the same one.

Had two Xmas songs on my list of 60-ish, and ended up cutting them both. This was one and very glad to see this classic get a nod.

My family wore out The Christmas Album. It was a staple for all my childhood Christmases. This song was my favorite too. And every single time the line "a turkey and some mistletoe" was played my brother and I would point at each other and yell "A TURKEY!". Great memory.

I never even really considered any Christmas songs, I Probably should have because they were a huge part of my childhood, but this would surely have been my #1.

Of the songs I knew I liked many this time around, Here are my fav's of these

Killing Me Softly (simey)
I Will Always Love You (Yankee23Fan)
Me and Bobby McGee (DrIanMalcolm)
More Than a Feeling (Zegras11)
The Christmas Song (Merry Christmas to You) (AAABatteries)

Still many songs selected that I was unfamiliar with including one that's probably a :bag: moment. These 3 were probably my favorites.

Everybody Dance (Uruk-Hai)
Champagne Problems (Chaz McNulty)
LA Freeway (worrierking)

I see that no one gave any love to my selection this round

I totally grooved on it and I was typing the lyrics to it to post here, but it was a lame post and I didn't go through with posting it for posterity. I said I could hear theremin in it -- or a theremin-like effect, anyway. But I didn't post it. So I guess I could really say it's not you, it's me.

Kudos to Tanner for pulling that from somewhere.
Lead vocalist reminds me of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah a bit with the way his voice breaks in a few places.

What a Fool Believes is definitely on the high end of that style of smooth rock
If you follow the official Yacht Rock podcast (from the guys who coined the term and did the web series), it's the perfect song for the genre. (And if you haven't seen the Youtube series, you should.)

HD version - So good.

That's what a fool believes, Kenny. That's what a fool believes.

Get yout **** out of your heart.

A familiar sound in which I never knew who it was nor the song title - The Flamingos **added**
A familiar sound in which I never knew the song title and inexplicably don't have it on my shuffle - Tighten Up **derp**
Best new to me - Champagne Problems...maybe I'll develop into a Swiftee

The medal round was easy in this one:
Bronze medal - Forgot About Dre
Silver medal - Me & Bobby McGee
Gold medal - Hey Ya

None were in the final bubble, but all were on my original list so they're on the tier just outside of it.

Not my pick, but love the bridge in this one. I was just posting in the Taylor Swift thread about her new album a week or two ago. Hop in - the water’s fine. There’s another song of hers that caused me to do a 180 on her, but I’ll say no more in case it appears.

Top 5 from Round 27

@Zegras11 More Than a Feeling - Boston: Greatest Debut album ever.
@simsarge Extraordinary - Liz Phair: Kelly Clarkson with an edge!
@falguy Tighten Up - The Black Keys: 2nd Tighten Up this week I've liked!
@Don Quixote Hey Ya! - Outkast: Hell ya!
@Uruk-Hai Everybody Dance - CHIC: So good.

2 New2Me:

@New Binky the Doormat Nice, Nice, Very Nice - Ambrosia: Only really know the big 3 Yacht Rock songs from them. Nice.
@worrierking L.A. Freeway - Guy Clark: Enjoyed this a lot, went down a rabbit hole and enjoyed the trip.

They tried to fool us into thinking that they were British, but we outted them here.
I was very confident this one wasn't getting double dipped. It's absolutely an age thing, but I much prefer the highs of 90's punk to those prior. One contribution was important to me, but not an obvious one. Front-to-back this was the best punk album of the era and this one aged the best of the lot - timely message for our current day too.

The media paints a picture that stains all of us
Pit dogs against cats now who is responsible
The power in the issue the force is unstoppable
I'm a battering raaaaa-am coming through right you
In every alleway and every avenue
OY-OY-OY-OY

I left off all my nineties punk because those records sit in an area of my record collection I didn't get to when I was doing this. I lament that. There should be at least one song from the 90s punk rock era on there, and I plum forgot to put it on. You can find two others in my "last nineteen out." Yes, I changed it to nineteen. Sue me. It's actually as good a listen as my first thirty-one, because, well, record collection location was the only thing determining what got on the list at that point.

Yours is also a good choice. I own that record, too. I don't listen to it all that much, but it's a defining record of that era, for sure.

His version of The Christmas Song is my favorite, and he was a phenomenal talent. I especially love his albums with Billy May. There is a compilation of their work together called The Billy May Sessions. It's great and it swings.

I came awfully close to politics in the music thread, which is like chocolate and hummus mixed together. Ewwwwww. Sorry about that.
It's a thin line with many artists - no need to apologize. Some music is meant to relax, others the opposite, then everywhere in between.

Yeah, Rancid intended it to be political and their affiliation is worn unabashedly (CPUSA), but I figured it’s a slippery slope, so I deleted it. No biggie.

The band I picked today was part of the White Panther Party and was meant to be viewed through that lens, so…

Where did we come out on weekend posts? I'm going to post one tomorrow, but what about Sunday? I saw one yea vote and one nay.
