What country do you recommend visiting and why? I'm interested in hearing some travel stories.

South Africa - the views are breathtaking, the people are nice and it's relatively safe.  There's a heavy British influence so most people in shopping/service distracts speak English.

Italy - Food, Culture, Sights. Italy has everything.

Belgium - Underrated food, best beer in the world.

Have not been to South Africa but what does it have over Australia (which I have been to)?

Australia, specifically Sydney feels more like a modern international city where Cape Town and the surrounding cites felt more like the US in the 70s.

1) Ireland - my magnetic north is in county Mayo is why.

2) Turkey - have only been once since 9/11 and not in the last 10 yrs, so it is likely much different now. Tramping around the Med in the late 80s, my late wife and i hired a guy in Izmir to drive us to the terraced springs at Pamukkele. He ended up driving us across almost the entire country (kappadokia, lake van) over the next couple weeks and we stayed w relatives of his almost every night. i'm sure that travelling with a translucent 6ft blonde helped with our reception (tho she had the ground in front of her spit at several times) but several followup trips confirmed the Turks as my favorite people. Plus, beyond folks and food, give me antiquity, beaches and low bug counts and you got me, which is why......

3) Any Mediterranean island - been to most, Rhodes and Sicily my favorites.

Foreign travel reminder - if you see the sites, you'll share the same great memories as millions of people enjoy. Get off the path (unless you have no capacity for languages) and you create memories no one else has.

The Bahamas - short (often direct to Nassau) flight (can easily make it a long weekend trip), beautiful beaches, wonderful food, they speak English and take American dollars.

Belize. English is the official language and their currency is based off the US dollar. Everything is cheap, its not a tourist trap, and they dont hate Americans as much as the Europeans. Jungles, rivers, tree-houses, cave tubing on the mainland. Awesome islands, beaches, snorkeling, fishing, barrier reef just a boat ride away. You better Belize it!

Went there last year and loved it. Cave tubing is one of the coolest things I have ever done.

Brazil - Nice people and I speak the lingo, fantastic beaches and nature in general. It has everything - also all the bad things. Rio, Fortaleza, Rio Grande do Sul, Natal, all great places

South Africa - Beyond beautiful, excellent wines. fantastic nature, friendly people in general although there can be a bit of a vibe in the big urban areas. Cape Town is fantastic, never met any one that did not like that place

Spain - Great food and wines, nature and beaches, nice outgoing people, excellent soccer if you are into that sort of thing.

Portugal - Spain's poorer, uglier and slightly weird little brother

Italy - Food and wine, history, Toscana, Umbria, Genova, there's every chance to have the vacation of your life there (at least if you are not an uptight schmuck)

Costa Rica - Easy to get to from the US, most relaxed place I've ever been, beautiful beaches and jungles every where you go and its pretty cheap.  Delicious food too.

Brazil - just a beautiful country with so much to see, amazing people and an energy like no other.  The one country that really changed my life and way of thinking.  If you're single, definitely go here before getting married.  Crime is overrated.  Felt safer there than many parts of the US.

As a married man I have no interest in going there.

It has one of the highest crime rates in the entire world.  Not that safe, not at all relatively speaking.

:lmao:

A friend of mine was told he had to go and help the office in South Africa for a month. His wife cried for 2 days and his kids thought they'd never see their father again. He only had a gun pointed at his head twice and a knife to his throat once.

Jo'burg is bad, no doubt about it. Durban can be bad in places. Even in Cape Town every house has a plaque that says 'Armed Response' and they mean it.

That said I had a period for about ten years from 2002 to 2012 where I travelled to South Africa extensively (granted predominately Cape Town) both for business and pleasure and I've never even had a slight issue.

So like the crime in Brazil it seems to me to be localized and also tends to hit those that do stupid stuff

Women in Iceland decide to have sex with you in the same way they might decide to share a cab with you.

Need to get back there.

Aruba.

Incredible weather....80s year round, not humid, out of the hurricane belt, plenty of things to do (beaches, snorkeling, horseback riding, jeep tours, golf, casinos, etc)  Most people speak English (everyone in the service industry does) and it's relatively safe.   And not that far (5 hour flight from NYC).

Bring your sunblock, though.

Too windy...  WAY too windy
