Favre a no-show for Monday's Packers workout

By CHRIS JENKINS, AP Sports Writer

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- Brett Favre was an unexpected no-show for the Green Bay Packers' voluntary workout Monday morning.

But it wasn't immediately clear whether Favre's absence was a big deal -- or simply a case of coaches not wanting to overwork their star quarterback so early in the offseason.

Favre was present for last week's voluntary workouts, and Packers coach Mike McCarthy said last week that he expected Favre to attend this week's sessions as well.

McCarthy said through a team spokesman that he would address Favre's absence during his regularly scheduled interview session on Tuesday. He has said several times that he wants to limit Favre's "pitch count" during workouts so the quarterback doesn't get worn out.

Favre is scheduled to speak to the media on Thursday and will host his annual charity softball tournament on Sunday.

Wide receiver Donald Driver recently said that getting the chance to work with Favre on chemistry and timing was a primary reason he was adamant about attending the voluntary workouts.

But Driver said Monday that he wasn't disappointed Favre wasn't on the field.

"Not at all," Driver said. "We came in, we knew we had a job to do regardless of the situation. We hope that everyone's here, but guys have time to take off. Guys had other plans and you have to respect that. Guys have their own thing going on right now."

Driver said working with the team's other quarterbacks on Monday was worthwhile.

"We still have great quarterbacks out there throwing the ball, so we can't just say we're not practicing because Brett's not practicing," Driver said. "There's going to be days where he doesn't practice and a lot of other guys don't practice. We still have to practice to win our games, regardless of the situation."

Favre wasn't the only notable absence on Monday. The Packers were again without both of their projected starting cornerbacks, Al Harris and Charles Woodson. Other notable absences included cornerback Ahmad Carroll, fullback William Henderson and defensive tackle Ryan Pickett.

Favre a no-show at Packers practice

By Dylan B. Tomlinson

On Friday, Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy confirmed that quarterback Brett Favre would be in attendance during the entire second week of organized team activities.

So when Favre was a no-show at Monday morning’s practice, it was only natural that some people would be curious about his whereabouts.

McCarthy was not scheduled to meet with the media on Monday. When asked through the Packers public relations staff to address Favre’s absence, McCarthy refused.

McCarthy had previously said that he expected Favre to participate in 10 of the 14 OTAs and said several times that he wanted to limit Favre’s throws in practice, but there still was no official explanation why he was absent on Monday.

A team source said Favre was “believed to be in the building” at Lambeau Field, but Favre’s car wasn’t in his regular parking spot and several players said they had not seen him all day.

“I have no idea where he is,” receiver Donald Driver said. “These are optional workouts and sometimes guys have plans.”

Favre is scheduled to meet with the media on Thursday and will hold his annual charity softball game on Sunday in Grand Chute.

Favre wasn’t the only player missing in action on Monday. Cornerback Ahmad Carroll missed Friday’s practice for personal reasons and McCarthy said he expected him back on Sunday, but Carroll was not at Monday’s practice.

Cornerbacks Al Harris and Charles Woodson, defensive tackle Ryan Pickett and fullback William Henderson also missed Monday’s practice. Harris, Woodson and Pickett have yet to make an appearance at the OTAs, but Henderson practiced on Thursday and Friday last week. Linebacker A.J. Hawk is not eligible to practice until he is finished with his college final exams, which means he will likely arrive later this week.

Receiver Rod Gardner and safety Mark Roman made their first appearances of the OTAs on Monday.

This is a real head scratcher for me. GB is going to zone blocking on the O line, and that dictates that there will be some major changes in how the offense is run. Guys like Garner and Favre should re-evaluate what playing in the NFL means to them. If you don't want to practice, especially on a new team, or with a new scheme..... just do something else already.

In how many concepts are they doing this? How many packages are they doing this in?

A non-story. From JSOnline...

Roll call

Quarterback Brett Favre didn't take part in the fourth day of the Packers' voluntary practices Monday on Clarke Hinkle Field.

He instead spent the morning working out in the weight room. Backup Aaron Rodgers, meanwhile, replaced Favre with the No. 1 offense.

Others who were missing from practice were fullback William Henderson, who had been present the three previous days, and cornerback Ahmad Carroll, who coach Mike McCarthy said last week was expected back for practice Monday after missing Friday.

Veterans who have yet to show up are cornerbacks Al Harris and Charles Woodson and defensive tackle Ryan Pickett.

Two previous veteran no-shows, safety Mark Roman and wide receiver Rod Gardner, made their first appearances Monday. Roman had been out for personal reasons, and Gardner's absence was both business- and family-related.

Veteran offensive lineman Adrian Klemm also showed, although he continues to sit out because of a knee injury.

I don't think Favre will have too much trouble picking up the offense being as early as it is, but agreed that Gardner needs to get his butt in there.

I agree, but Favre and every other veteran should be there. They are installing new Offensive and new Defensive schemes. For anyone to miss is shameful.

Tom Brady would be out there with his teammates. So would Peyton Manning. And so would Ben Roethlisberger.

Don't the Packers have a decent number of players who are "not there"?
Yes they do..... and since Favre is the supposed "leader"..... they follow what he does. If he doesn't have to show, why should any of the other vets? Remember how Favre ran Walker out on the line last year? Pot, meet kettle. Now, I'm sure Flaved will show up to do a spell check on my post. So..... I mispelled his screen name so he can fulfill his dreams.....
