:excited:

Bettis is not in the same class as Sanders, Rice, Emmitt, Favre. Not saying he doesn't deserve in. But he might have trouble as he is obviously second tier in his time period.

Favre's just a glory hound who doesn't want to share the spotlight with anyone. Good topic...this is probably the real reason he came back. ;)

Brett will let you know, well maybe, I`m not sure, we took a vote, 2 more weeks, if he`d like to be on the H O Fame ballot. ENOUGH already!!!!

Haven't you heard; Brett is considering not going to the Hall of Fame. Unless Canton surrounds him with better players he is going to spend more time with his family in Mississippi.

Bettis and Vermeil aren't first-ballot HoFers. I don't think Vermeil gets in at all (if he does, it won't be for a while until there are a few lean years). I also don't think Bettis gets in first ballot, and I think Bettis will be in serious trouble if he doesn't get in right away and Martin retires after this season, since I think Martin *has* to get in over Bettis.Edit: Also remember, there's the senior committee recommendation that makes it, too, which would push this class up to 6. Only twice in the past 10 years has the HoF let in 6 people in a season.

I still cannot for the life of me figure out how Bettis is percieved as a lock for the HOF.
Because he's probably the best "big" back of all time, and is #5 in career rushing yards. Notice I didn't say he was the best "power" back of all-time, (Earl Campbell IMO has that honor) but Bettis was a one-of-a-kind runner, because he was so just so big (borderline just straight-up fat) and had some of the quickest feet for a guy that size you'd ever see. There were very, very few RB's that could grind out the clock, pick up short-yardage, and just wear out the opponent in games as well as Jerome Bettis. You also have to consider some of the help (or lack thereof) he had in the passing game throughout his career.

These were his QB's...

1993: An injured Jim Everett (8 TD's, 12 INT's) and T.J. Rubley

1994 and 1995: Chris Miller

1996: Mike Tomczak

1997-1999: Kordell Stewart

2000: Kent Graham

2001: Kordell Stewart

2002-2003: Tommy Maddox

2004-2005: Ben Roethlisberger

Not until 2004 did he get a good QB to aid his rushing efforts. Teams stacked 8 in the box almost CONSTANTLY, every game.

But when his QB's had good seasons passing the ball which was rare, Bettis played at an extremely high level. In 1997, Bettis gained over 1,600 yards. In 2001, Bettis had over 1,000 yards to the tune of 4.8 YPC before he was injured. And in 2004, the last year as a starter, he gained 100 yards in every start he had until the AFCCG. Other than those 3 seasons, his QB's were TERRIBLE as long as Bettis was the starter.

He's a HOF player, undoubtedly.

Vermeil will be eligible the next time they vote. Coaches don't have to wait 5 years.

There were a lot of guys as good as Sanders? Only if scientists have, without my knowledge, successfully cloned Walter Peyton and Jim Brown twenty or thirty times each.I'm trying to decide if you're serious or just :fishing: .

The initial post is talking about Deion Sanders, not Barry Sanders.

Since Rice didn't actually play a game in 2005 or receive a game check I don't think he's considered active in 2005 thus going in with 2004's class.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you are too young to have seen him play. Anyone who watched him and knows anything about football talent would never say this.

Oh yeah, right. Well, in that case, change "Walter Peyton" and "Jim Brown" to "Night Train" and "Mel Blount".

I believe this is correct, but then he would have to go in as a Bronco. I think he wants to sign for a day with San Fran and go into the hall as a 49er.

I don't believe that is correct. I think the player gets his choice of teams. Otherwise, by the same method Reggie White would have went in as a Panther.

He already signed and retired with San Fran. Also, regardless of where you finish up your career, you always go in as whatever you did the bulk of your work in.

He didn't sign and retire with San Fran. He wanted to but it was too late. That's why I thought he was planning on doing it this year, so he could retire a 49er. I thought you had to go into the hall with the team you retired with, but I could be wrong. And in fact, probably am.

I don't think they go in "with a team" at all. I'm pretty sure they just go in and all of their teams are listed.

I guess we'll have to wait for the Reggie Bush / Brett Favre induction day now. ;)
Is Reggie petitioning to go into the hall of fame after 4 years of playing instead of 4 years after you stop playing? Wearing any number you prefer?
