Raider Nation

Devil's Advocate
This is pretty sad, I know, but I am counting on having Minnesota's QB for the stretch run as the Vikings have a VERY favorable schedule in the last few weeks. Brooks Bollinger has a "grade 2 AC sprain" in his left (non-throwing) shoulder. Is that something he can play through after a painkiller injection?

The speculation is that Childress would have certainly started Bollinger for the rest of the season, but then he got hurt towards the end of the game last Sunday. If he can't go, Johnson is likely to start again. The feeling is that the rookie Jackson is not ready for action. At least that's what I've read in several places.

Childress is supposed to be on Sirius radio this morning with Pat & Tim to talk about the team. If anyone hears updates about the QB derby, please post updates here. I can't be the only one wondering about this. :bag:

Bollinger's return will probably depend on pain tolerance and range of motion. Painkilling injections aren't often used with injuries like this as they may mask additional injury. And this isn't an injury that's likely to be helped much by a harness while playing like a subluxation/dislocation would.

Rest, pain medication, and immobilization in a sling will speed his recovery. Probably won't know until late in the week if he'll be able to practice and ultimately play.

Vikings coach Brad Childress said Monday he has not made a decision on his quarterback for Sunday's game at Detroit. But two starters Monday lobbied for rookie Tarvaris Jackson to supplant veteran Brad Johnson in the lineup.

Both players, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said starting Jackson would not be a concession that the team is giving up on the rest of the season.

"We can't get any worse," one of the players said.

The players said they do not begrudge Johnson, but they have been impressed with Jackson's ability to run the scout team in practices. "Tarvaris can play," one player said.

Interestingly, both players said playing Jackson now could serve the team well in the future. Specifically, they said how Jackson performs can enable the Vikings to determine how they need to address the position in the offseason.

"We need to see if he can be 'The Guy' next year," one player said.

If Jackson were to struggle down the stretch, the Vikings would have to consider signing one of the veterans expected to be available in the offseason. That group could include Chris Simms, Drew Bledsoe, Byron Leftwich, Jake Plummer and Matt Schaub, a restricted free agent.

Neither Viking veteran, though, mentioned current backup Brooks Bollinger, who led the offense on the only touchdown drive, early in the fourth quarter.

But one player said Bollinger had a shoulder harness on Monday, and the quarterback needed the assistance of a team official and receiver Marcus Robinson to put on his shirt and jacket after Sunday's game. He also received an injection, according to Childress, to "take the edge off, pain-wise."

During his address of reporters Monday morning, Bollinger was not wearing a harness.

Bollinger was knocked out of the game late in the fourth quarter, after Bears defensive end Adewale Ogunleye leveled him for a sack. Bollinger has a grade 2 AC sprain, which, according to AthleticAdvisor.com, is "tearing of two of the three ligaments supporting the joint." The symptoms include tenderness and an inability to move the arm "without severe pain."

"I'm not sure that Brooks is really comfortable enough where he's going to be able to practice a whole heck of a lot to start with," Childress said.

I would honestly consider picking up and starting Tarvaris Jackson if Childress gave him the nod.... I think he'll be an instant success.

He's very cool in the pocket yet still has that escapability you look for. Also delivers the ball a lot more effectively.

If they put him in, they might still have a shot at the playoffs.

As long as he doesn't carry it like a loaf of bread as he did on Sunday.I think it will be Johnson on Sunday. I don't think Brooks will be ready and Jackson has said in the paper tha he doesn't feel ready. (This could be Childress speaking through him. Childress has said Jackson won't play this year several times before.)I think this is wrong. Give the kid a shot. Obviously Johnson is struggling and if you put him back out there, I think you lose the team. Jackson would perform well just because the team would rally around him.

Perhaps not.LINK to comments below

Childress, of course, would not commit to who might start during his postgame news conference, but Jackson had a telling comment when asked if he was ready to take over.

“Not really,” he said. “I want to be but if it comes down to that, I’d go out there and just give it my best shot really.”
Also, I read some other comments from Jackson after the game the other day, and for the life of me I cannot find the link anymore. :( He basically said that he could not believe the speed of the game, and it's nothing like the preseason when you're playing against 2nd & 3rd stringers. He's better of keeping his mouth shut and maybe Childress will roll with him. But if he keeps making statements as if he's overwhelmed, he won't get his shot this year.

I know this sounds far-fetched and I have no basis or link, but things out of Winter Park seem so scripted that is is just plain strange. So here is my personal, Vikes Fan theory...I think this is Childress talking through Jackson. The players this year are really not allowed to say much of anything to the media. Often the paper says that the players were not even allowed to speak on their own injuries. I think as fans have been hoping for Jackson, Childress planted these comments with Jackson, never believing that it would come to Jackson playing in a game. When he entered the Bears game and then got interviewed immediateky afterward, Jackson assumed the comments he was told to make, even before Childress could help him change his position.

I usually do not post theories like this because they get ripped, so let me have it! I am sure I will go back to never posting them again...
