Now that the dust is settling a bit, two big thumbs up to Mangini and Gang Green.

Despite the tough loss - and it's still hard to stomach despite the "well, we made it this far" party line - it was quite a season especially considering the team was expected to compete for the #1 pick.

Optimistically, a lot of pieces are in place for next year. With some tinkering, mainly on the defensive line and in the running game, we may not be too far away.

Mangini is pulling a Coughlin (early years with Jacksonville). He's building a team starting in the trenches. It's not the sexy way to go about it, but probably the smartest. Ferguson and Mangold were stellar and did a great job keeping Penny upright. A big  .What do you think will happen to them in the off season? Who are their FA's? Do you think Leon Washington can handle the full time load or do you think they look for a starter in FA or draft? I'm just wondering because they have a young team and seem to have some good talent (Cotchery, Baker, Washington, Houston, Penny, Clemons...etc). I think they have the leisure of taking BPA in the draft or do they have a weakness they need to strengthen? Possibly D-line?

:lmao: Great season. I wasn't too confident going into that game and felt we were outmanned and just missing too many pieces to pull it off and then next week would have been that much tougher....

Very few times as a fan does your team go into a game where you aren't completely emotionally attatched to the results. The Buffalo loss a few weeks back hurt more than this one. A Miami loss would have sucked on Christmas. THIS was house money as much as it could be in a Rebuilding Year.

The 1 play that just kills me though is that Vilma play - He had a completely free path to Brady and should have just DESTROYED him. One of those plays that can change history, like the hit on Bledsoe a few years back that started all this. Brady should have been picking turf out of his teeth and Vilma went for the slap. Vilma should see that play in his dreams the whole offseason - rarely do you get such an opportunity like that to have such an effect on a game and he waved at it.

Other than that I'm excited for the offseason, Brick adding some weight, and a great offseason, looking forward to seeing what these coaches can do when they fill the holes with their players. It's a tough schedule next year with the NFC east on tap. We'll see, maybe Dallas and the Giants have new staffs?

I think Brian Schottenheimer is just GREAT - Guy calls a game like I play Madden with the Hurry ups and all.. Great to see some innovation on offense around here - And the D as well... Great to not have your team be the most predictable in the league... I fear Brian will be taken away within a year or two and become a HC... If I were in charge somewhere he'd be on my radar - especially in Atlanta, too late.

Pats fan here - tipping my cap. Good season, and a really hard fought 3/4's of a game yesterday. Pretty amazing considering the state of the team was in last season and even the "cap hell" it was supposedly in this past off-season.

I really like the Belichick/Mangini gamesmanship. All of the little games they played making the other burn time outs and everything yesterday - should be an interesting match up for years to come.

Jets obviously had a very good season. They surpassed expectations by a large margin and look to be poised for the future. They lost yesterday to the better team which is going to usually happen.

Excellent season with lots to look forward to. :lmao:

Not a "Jet fan" but like the Jets. They did a phenomenal job this year and hung in yesterday until the lateral fumble. The big thing they need IMO is a running back. Washington is nice but if they can get a good RB to keep teams honest they will be a very good team. Great season when nothing at all was expected of them.

Good stuff, Reaper.I agree that the Jets just got beaten by a better team, but my one bone of contention yesterday was falling asleep on the lateral, where the Pats ran it back inside the ten. Very uncharacteristic of this team, and it was a huge turning point. As for Warpig's earlier question, I think they go BPA in the draft with not a ton of holes. In free agency, I expect them to target the DL and cornerback (Asante Samuel?), with RB and TE (Daniel Graham?) also a possibility. I love what Leon Washington brings to the table, but more as a situational guy as opposed to a 20-25 carry guy. I think to take some pressure off Chad, they need a guy that will consistently grind out the tough yards. Houston is decent, but they can upgrade here. I'd love to see Turner, but I'm not sure if a trade can be worked out.

I know it's been brought up in other threads but I watch the Chargers a lot and think Turner would be the perfect fit. It may cost a lot but I really think he'd be worth a look and would be surprised if the Jets didn't inquire about him in the offseason. He could be scary behind that developing line....

Agreed - they have two second rounders this year plus $28 million in salary cap room, so it's certainly possible. I have little doubt they'll at least consider Turner given his connection with Schottenheimer.

The guy who has impressed me the most on this Jets team is Kerry Rhodes. Kid has gamechanging talent and determination.

There was a thread started during the preseason (June or July IIRC).

The premise was "name 5 teams who will not make the playoffs"

The most popular guesses were the Titans, Jets, 49ers, Texans, Raiders, Bills, Saints (just about in that order).

I'd say their season was an overwhelming success and it looks like Mangini is capable of becoming the next great coach in the Parcells/Belicheck tree.

Even though the final score was lopsided yesterday, you could tell that the Jets were very well-coached and well-prepared. They just didn't have the talent on offense to keep up with the Patriots. Once they get some more talent on offense, like a reliable number one RB, they will be a tough team to deal with.

The one way in which I thought the coaching fell short was the Jets' defensive approach. When they beat the Pats last time it was because they put a LOT of pressure on Brady. Last time what the Jets would do is have all these LB's and DB's sorta standing and milling around the LOS pre-snap, and then when Brady snapped the ball, some of them would sprint into coverage, and other ones would blitz. It made it really tough for Brady to figure out who was going to be coming and who was going to be covering - it was really one of the few games I saw Brady get confused and Belichick get out-coached.Then this past game, they did the exact same thing: players standing around pre-snap, and then coming hard with the blitz. The Patriots had obviously adjusted to it, and Brady had a very good day and was well-protected. I understand that if you're the Jets, you want to stick with what is working - but I would think that Mangini would have known that Belichick was going to adapt and that trying the same thing twice was a dangerous gameplan.Just my .02. Takes nothing away from the great season Mangini and the Jets had.

I'd say they also need a pass rushing DE. They need to be able to get pressure on the QB with their base defense. Otherwise, I agree totally.

Not at all.. The Jets just didn't have the horse to do "Anything" they wanted.. Dyson was injured as well, so they couldn't blitz like they did the last time. Two things though - Dillon hold the ball out there a TON, we were yelling every time he had the ball for someone to grab it... Jets were also damn close to a lot of Brady throws - Jets needed a huge break like the Pats got on that lateral. You knew a play like that would happen, Jets need it the other way.

I was hopeful for 10 wins, in the 1st 2 Mangini years COMBINED.

So I am happy the way they played.

Yes their schedule was easy, but, they still played up to the competetion (minus the Jags game) and more impessive they did not play down to their competetion much.

Years before they would have found ways to lose to GB, HOU, MIN & OAK.

Pennington will be an intresting story.

He had a good season, and stayed healthy.

They are not asking much from him, and he still had 16 INT's to 17TD's.

He is not the QB of the future for the Jets.

I assume they will go into next season with him penciled in as the starter.

Next year will be tough, their schedule should not be as soft.

They're expectations will be higher.

Will Pennington be healthy?

Who will be the starting RB?

Can they stop the run consistantly?

None the less, they will be fun to watch

jets and saints should be proud of how their teams did this season for drafting in the 2 and 4 hole i believbe last year to having bright futures :goodposting:

Another very happy Jets fan. :goodposting:

It was fun enjoying the season and not focusing on the draft by week 8. :)

Looking forward to the future now - thanks Mangini and Jets organization.
