Fantasy Football Index magazine: $7.99

WE HAVE CANCELLED PUBLICATION OF THE INK-ON-PAPER EDITION OF FANTASY FOOTBALL INDEX FOR 2011. Subscribers may write to customerservice@fantasyindex.com to request (a) a refund; or (b) credit toward Fantasy Index newsletters or an all-electronic edition of Fantasy Football Index magazine for 2011, to be published several weeks after a labor agreement is reached; or © a free copy of the 2012 ink-on-paper edition of Fantasy Football Index magazine. We will attempt to notify all subscribers by e-mail to publicize these options.

this is the kind of impact I was wondering about with my fbg sales impactquestion.

I suspect there will be similar stories coming out - my only question will be which companies will survive the loss of revenue. Hope they were putting away cash before the NFL got stupid

When we did our print magazine, we had to be done with all the content by early May, so the print guys are especially impaired by this kind of labor strife.

like I said in your thread- I think this is going to kill the print market & really torpedo online subs

Print's dying anyway(not just as far as FF is concerned). The lockout may speed it up some for the FF industry, but within about three years the magazines were likely going to be toast anyway.

It's not like you can't purchase the electronic version and print the PDF if you REALLY wanna have a hard copy for when you're copping a squat.

I buy this magazine because I like to read while I float around in the pool. And it's always interesting to see another point of view.

I use it for the same reason...I will also tell you, something printed in June (in a regular year) does not fall for preseason hype. Sure, if ADP blows out his knee in the preseason a magazine will not save you, but having something from that timeframe is a nice "grounding device" for guys who artificially move up because of a few good preseason throws/catches/runs. In 2004 or 2005, William Green ripped off a huge run in preseason game #2 or 3 on a Friday night. The next day, a ton of leagues drafted and he went roughly 2 rounds ahead of where he should have. When you go back to any FF mag from that year, he landed right about where he was supposed to. We live in a "now" world and while that can give us a ton of insight, it also can make us forget what we thought throughout the previous 7 months.

some solid points in here. not to mention most magazines did/do free updates throughout the preseason anyway. just because someone has an opinion on august, doesn't mean a different one from june is worse.sure if you aren't paying attention and only using the magazine then you could get burned, but frankly if you are only using the magazine, you weren't going to win anyway. this kind of makes me sad. FF index is the only magazine i really buy to read, they have some good insight and different opinions. also, this was like the magazine when i first started playing FF back in 95.

PDF? Print hard copy? Isn't this the best reason iPhones, iPads, Android devices were created? :toilet:

Someone also created the butt plug. Doesn't mean I want to use it though.

I use the internet for almost everything fantasy-related, but Fantasy Football Index is the one magazine I always purchase.

For one, I think it's the best written fantasy mag by far, and provides a nice foundation for the coming season. There is much more timely information available on the web, but there's nothing as concise when it comes to developing a good foundation for the season. This is especially true for those of us who don't always follow the blow-by-blow of the off-season. FFI provides a good summary of this time-period.

It's also a good recommendation for people who are new to the game. They'll be screwed if they don't combine it with all of the latest info available online, but it's a good starting point.

FFI also seems to feature far fewer full-page contest ads than their competition. I'm allergic to mulleted, oakley razorbladed dudes in Manning jerseys holding up fistfulls of dollar bills, so this is always appreciated.

That blows...I still have every copy of this since the '95 season, when they put Steve Young on the cover and had an article about how he was so far and away the #1 player that snake drafts that year should have the person with the #1 OA pick choose last in the 3rd round, in addition to the 2nd and 4th rounds, to accommodate for it.

I have every fantasy football index magazine sitting right here right next to me from 1995-2010. I never miss buying it. I still to this day look back at the issues 6-7 years ago sometimes I still pull out the ole 1998 issue to see where they said stay away from Randy Moss. That said I love this magazine and this news upsets me.

How is any magazine going to be publish their magazines this year AND take into account free agency?
who cares, I'd buy it just for the stat tables.
I care. Like most of you guys, I do my fantasy football research online, but I still like to have a magazine for my morning/afternoon train rides, and would hope that free agency is taken into account when they publish their magazine.

This is a shame. Another big fan of FFI here. I like technology, but it was still refreshing to get my copy each June.

The best FF mag out there, IMO. Hopefully, this won't be the end of them.

I have bought FFI going back to when it was called Fantasy Football 'XX (year). I think I originally bought it in '88 or '89?!? And every year since.

Ian et al setup a narrative for the upcoming season that, when combined with personal observation of the off-season, can be a real advantage as training camp starts and fresher news comes in.

It will be missed this year. Big time.

Back before there was so much info on the net, their training camp stuff was a gold mine. I remember them giving me a heads-up on Isaac Bruce. Back then, it was much hard to do your own "visual" scouting. Now, with the cable packages offered today and the newfangled DVR setups, it's a lot easier to scout for dynasty leagues (not that there were many dynasty leagues 15 years ago). When you combine that, not to mention YouTube, along with "text" scouting (written info on the net), it's a breeze compared to what it used to be. And scouting pro players is obviously much easier, as well.

If you really wanted to print a magazine you could. 90% of the material in a mag is projections, stat tables, ads, team capsules, etc. We know who is most likely going to move, just not where. You could rank the top 10 RBs EASILY today (with writeups, etc.), since none of them are going anywhere. Sure it gets dicey with guys like Kolb...if he goes to AZ you have to bump Fitz, etc., but the "bones" are there. What these guys don't want to do is to put a ton of time into creating a solid infrastructure only to find out the season will be canceled or massively delayed. If the season were to be announced in early mid-August, they would be toast (too much $$ and effort in for a product that would not arrive in time). But if this thing solves itself in June or July, a company that gets most of their fantasy revenues from a magazine (very few nowadays), will be kicking themselves.

Quoting myself here (lol), but now that things have settled, did these magazines leave business on the table. More importantly, the biggest knock on magazines is that they are done so far in advance. This "could" have been an opportunity to close the gap, and be closer to "real time". With that said, I have no clue what it takes to get a magazine to market. As I stated in my earlier post, I do believe 90% could have ben done before today (IF they wanted to invest the resources), and my guess is that they could have 99% set and ready to go to the printer by next Monday (8/1). I am throwing this out to anyone who knows about the time table on this (FBG staff that worked on the old magazine?), but would love to see if the fantasy Index's of the world could have made this happen? If it is a 3 week turnaround from 8/1, I could see how it would not be worth it, but if it is a 10-14 day turnaround, it would be doable...also, wondering if anyone has heard whether an ESPN is going to try to pull it off.

Same here. I haven't bought an actual FF magazine in at least 5 years. Seems pretty pointless these days.
And a total waste of money for outdated information.
I never bought FF Index for updated information.I bought FF Index because it is THE BEST crapper reading material, bar none.
:goodposting: Who cares if it's outdated? It's worth the $8 just to read through the stats of various players see other people's viewpoints on different players.

And I travel a lot so having a PDF version of something on my iPad is great when I don't have an Internet connection while on the plane. I use an app that i can write my notes on in the PDF itself so its really useful. Would like to see FBGs do their magazine in PDF format again.

It's very cool, my sister in law uses it for her job which is editing medical journals. Works very well for that purpose.

I'd be surprised if the other mags didn't follow suit here. There's so little turnaround time from production to delivery. Magazine sales are an odd business to begin with as the publishers produce a ton of mags and only hope to sell a small percentage. It'd be very difficult to be profitable in this short time frame
